Last Monday we went in for the first time. I was served a gluten free waffle cone or at least I was told. This Monday I was told only Saturday and Sunday are when the gluten free waffle cones are available. I'm worried about last Monday and the possibility that I could have had a non gluten waffle especially because I'm pregnant and don't want to harm my baby. Would have been 5 stars if I had known that last week. I really craved for a gluten waffle cone with the ice cream because I've never found a place that had the option. What a great little ice cream shop! Since I've moved to a low carb/keto lifestyle, I haven't had a lot of ice cream. But we had some family events in town, and someone suggested Outside the Cone. "Best in town," they said. And I would bet they are probably right. We passed 3 or 4 different ice cream shops to get to this one. And it was still hoppin' right up until close. Since I'm on vacation, I allowed myself to indulge in one of their waffle cones that they make in-house. (The place smells delicious from their handmade cones!) But I did try the keto butter pecan. Sweet sassy molassy! Butter pecan is my favorite flavor and this keto version was ON POINT! Absolutely delicious. A great treat if you're doing low carb or keto. Just get it in a cup (unlike me!) We sat outside as it was a little crowded inside. But there are several tables to choose from and 3 or 4 outside. I was also impressed they had a full baby changing table in the restroom. I don't have babies, anymore. But I remembered the hassle (especially for men!) of finding a changing station. So, that was a helpful addition for families. read more

Upon entering this ice cream place, I was greeted with what appeared to be an official resolution from the Virginia State House declaring that this place is really really good. It is. Indeed, I don't know of a place like this in the Richmond area, but this location in a Lynchburg shopping center has everything you'd want in a premium ice cream place. The aroma of cones was difficult to resist and they had the option to get one coated with chocolate on the inside. I used this to make my mint chocolate chunk more chocolate-y, which was a good decision, and yet one that did not overwhelm the robust herbal mint flavor. Alternatives were many, including vegan flavors, local fruits, and even supposedly a keto flavor without sugar, which I'm skeptical of but good for them for trying I guess. It's rich, unique, and absolutely unforgettable, just like many of the other obscure and creative flavors we got to try. But what truly made the experience memorable were Merriel and Ashley, two absolute gems of human beings who made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Their patience, kindness, and genuine warmth during our (admittedly indecisive) flavor selection made all the difference. We especially had the pleasure of talking more with Merriel, and wow, what a shining star. She was thoughtful, attentive, and carried herself with the kind of care and professionalism you rarely see anymore, especially at an ice cream joint. She's special in many ways! You can tell she truly takes pride in all she does, and it really lifts the entire experience. Ashley was equally sweet and helpful, and together they are part of what makes this place award winning in every way. We had Outside the Cone cater our wedding, and it was a HUGE hit with our guests! The staff was incredibly friendly, and they were absolutely game with using our custom ice cream cups (mini baseball helmets, like at the games!). We got Vanilla, Chocolate, and Cookies and Cream, which, again, were all HUGE hits with our guests. We've been to the in-person store a few times as well, and it was just as good there as it was at our wedding. The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is the blast of waffle smells. They clearly make their cones in house. Phenomenal ice cream. Well priced and the quality of the ice cream is second to none. I liked how the waffle cone was somewhat bendable, a callback to the origins of the waffle cone being... an actual waffle. Nothing is sadder when you bite into your cone and it shatters like a poorly tempered car window. Definitely will be coming here again! Outside the Cone offers the most creative and delicious assortment of flavors and the BEST waffle cones. They have a weekly flavor lab where they experiment with different flavor choices. Sometimes these choices are only there for the week and sometimes they bring back fan favorites. Apart from the flavor lab, there are classic flavors that are offered continuously. The staff members always greet customers upon entry and they are polite at the service bar. They offer samples of flavors so customers can narrow down their favorite choice. The inside of the store is cute with a variety of cows and ice cream paintings on the walls. There are different sized tables indoors and they have outdoor-seating as well. **YOU MONEY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SAFETY** Great ice cream! Great customer service!!!! But!!!!!!!!! During this pandemic, this establishment is not requiring patrons to wear mask. I came into this establishment and immediately walked out when I saw people packed against the walls running out the door. This establishment has a sign on the door requiring people to wear mask; however, they are not enforcing the rules. It's seems they care more about your money than they do your health and for that I will not support this business until they live up to guidelines. VDH should be notified about this as soon as possible. Our health is at risk. Governor Northam announced that Virginia enters Phase Three of the Forward Virginia reopening plan on Wednesday, July 1. VDH urges all Virginians to continue to limit exposure by staying 6 feet from others and wearing a cloth mask while in public settings. Governor Northam announced Executive Order 63, a mask mandate, which requires Virginians over 10 years old to wear face coverings in public settings and business establishments, effective May 29. THEY ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES BY MAKING ALL CUSTOMERS TO WEAR A MASK!!!! RESPONSE FROM OWNER: Like many other businesses, we have chosen to not enforce the mask man date verbally and force customers to leave the store. One of the reasons we made this decision is because the majority of our staff is under the age of 18 and I do not feel it is appropriate or safe for them to confront adults regarding mask usage. As a small business we only have the staff on hand to sell ice cream and serve our customers. We have spoken to the health department regarding this and they said what we are doing is perfectly acceptable. Businesses are required to post signage regarding the mandate (which is posted on both of our entrances), but are not required to enforce the legislation. For those who do not feel it is safe to enter we do make exceptions and will bring an order out to your car if you call ahead and can pay in cash for your order. I would also recommend visiting between 12PM-5PM when we typically do not have many other customers in the store to avoid contact. It is just very difficult as a small business during these times when so many are not wearing masks even when they know that it has been ordered. ----------------------------------------------- ADD ON You are free to call the LYH Health Department and ask them if a business must make customers leave if they are not wearing a mask. Came in on a Sunday night for a double-scoop on a waffle cone. The gals working that night were polite and gave good recommendations for ice cream. Out of the two flavors I got (I forgot the name, but it's the one with potato chips, lol) and the cotton candy flavor, cotton candy was a clear winner! The waffle cone was tasty too.
