Being able to drive up and park was perfect for my family and I since I have young kids. It's a short distance walk from the parking area. There are two lookouts, both fenced in. The first lookout was smaller and has a bench. The second lookout was wide. It's on a huge boulder and the views were stunning. The pictures and videos don't do it any justice, you have to see it for yourselves. There are views of the White Mountains, Saco River Valley, and Echo Lake. This is also a popular place for people to rock and ice climb. I'm glad we got to check it out!

The overlook of the lake is the best part of the hike. I hiked this in June during a weekday, and there were only about 3 cars in the entire parking lot. Compared to the Flume Gorge hike, this was pretty solitary and peaceful. There were a ton of bugs and mosquitoes out and about, so bring bug spray.

It's a very windy and a little bit scary drive, but once you get to the top it's so worth it! There are beautiful views and lots of photo ops. They also have a few stores, a museum, a post office, and food options. There is also an option to hike up and down, or take the train (one or both ways). Its lush, with thick foliage, mountains, lakes, and clear area views at many spots. There was so much to do there but we were on a clock. So chose to experience the Cog Railway (With my weak lungs, I wouldn't have been able to the hike anyway) It was misty and foggy when we left NH and was kinda worried but lady luck smiled on us and it turned out to be the perfect sunny but not stingy sunny. It was about a 30 min ride up. With constant commentary on the railway, the height it is going, history, use etcetc everything that can put one to sleep(;).... lol... yes and no... the history part was really interesting for me... as the other parts on mechanics must have interested the others... but he spoke non stop and that's something ! On top was the most amazing scenery. The clouds below u and just green mountains all around. At one point everyone and everything around seize to exist.... that kind of beauty. There is a cafe on top and everyone squeezed in as it got real chilly. Ones who cane prepared with coats, caps , gloves took their coffee and stood out- cause thats where u need to be . I think they gave us about an hour to spend before they come to collect us. U can miss and take the next one down provided it is not already full with the valid ticketed passengers. It was the last train of the day so we didn't have the option of waiting. It should be noted here that u can drive up to the top, almost to the top, but the Railroad experience is unique. The driver had explained that 4 states borders are visible... to me it was all just mountains, clouds, and my effort to try to capture my excitement in a camera so I would never forget it ....

On October 11, 2026, after testing positive for COVID-19, I contacted Cog Railway and left a message explaining that I was ill and needed to discuss my reservation. The following morning, October 12, a customer service representative returned my call. She offered to reschedule my reservation for October 31 or cancel it, but stated that either option would require a $15-per-person fee. I explained that I was trying to avoid exposing other passengers and asked whether the company was truly unwilling to make a reasonable exception under the circumstances. We were disconnected. I then called the company back. The representative again cited the $15-per-person fee. When I asked for her name, she refused to provide it. When I requested to speak with a supervisor, she hesitated and said she was unsure whether the supervisor would speak with me. I persisted, and eventually a woman identifying herself as Shirley came on the line. Shirley repeated that the $15-per-person fee was required. I asked whether the company would really prefer that I board a train after testing positive for COVID-19, potentially exposing other passengers, rather than allow me to reschedule or cancel without a fee. Shirley responded that she had seen other passengers simply wear masks and was "pretty sure" that would be enough. I found that response deeply concerning. Masks can reduce the risk of transmission, but they do not eliminate it. Why should fellow passengers be expected to assume that risk when someone who has tested positive is actively trying to avoid exposing them? The issue is not simply whether a company has a cancellation policy. It is whether that policy should be applied without reasonable consideration for public health and the circumstances facing a customer. I understand that businesses have policies and that cancellation fees may be legitimate in ordinary circumstances. However, companies should have the discretion to make reasonable exceptions when a customer tests positive for a contagious illness and is trying to protect others. Customer service representatives are the public face of a company. They should be able to listen, communicate respectfully, and exercise sound judgment when a situation calls for flexibility. Refusing to identify herself, hesitating to connect me with a supervisor, and suggesting that other passengers simply wear masks did not reflect the level of professionalism I would expect. I was trying to do the responsible thing. Instead of receiving understanding or a reasonable alternative, I was left questioning whether enforcing a $15-per-person fee mattered more than helping prevent potential exposure to other passengers. I am sharing this experience because I believe the public deserves to know how legitimate health concerns are handled by businesses serving the public. I invite Cog Railway to consider what this interaction says about its customer service practices. And I ask readers: Should a company have the discretion to make a reasonable exception when a passenger tests positive for a contagious illness and is trying to protect others? Profile Lake is a beautiful spot that is designated only for fly fishing (trout). this is also…read morefamous for the old man of the mountain, but that collapsed in 2003. the north side of the lake the "tourist side". That is where the viewing area of the "Old Man of the Mountain" was for years. The viewing area is still there and is accessible from the parking lots of the Cannon Mountain tramway. Unfortunately, the "Old Man" is gone. His visage literally fell off the side of the mountain that he inhabited for millennia.

Nice view with many wild flowers. I did a loop hike. 9.2…read moremile, 2625 feet elevation gain. Hiked up via Gorge Brook trail, then checked out South peak which is a small detour. Then, continued on Carriage road to the Mount Moosiluke. Hiked down via Beaver brook trail and Asquam ridge trail. The top area is green meadow. This is very unusual in the White mountains. It is nice to sit down in the meadow and have lunch with view.

I highly recommend this trail for a half day 4-5 hour outing as the full loop is about 7.5 miles. There is a little stretch near the top that's so windy it will freeze up your face and any liquids you're carrying will instantly turn into ice. I'm pretty sure with the windshield factor up there, it's below zero. As long as you've got the proper gear (gloves, multiple layers of clothing, hat and definitely microspikes or crampons) to tackle this baby, the summit is absolutely worth all the hard work. The Madison…read moreBoulder is a ~5,000 ton glacial erratic made of granite - which makes sense since it's found in the Granite State lol. Of course, the pictures don't do it justice and you can't really fathom the size just by reading the stats alone - it's an awe inspiring sight that you have to see to believe! The boulder measures 87 feet long, 23 feet tall, and 37 feet wide. Also, the boulder is partially buried at about 10-12 feet underground! And recently scientists have been able to determine that the boulder is around 14,000 years old. Left behind all those years ago by a retreating glacier. You'll find it down a dirt road with a small, rough dirt parking lot - there are some large, deep potholes so I recommend to drive slow and careful, especially with low clearance vehicles. But it's doable. A short, very flat hike is required along a dirt road but it's well maintained and easy - about 1/2 mile one way. If you visit in fall, you'll be treated to some lovely colors along the way! I visited twice - mid to late October 2021 and early October 2023. Mid to late October had much more colors than early October but it also varies from year to year. You'll find the boulder on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest and only a few miles away from The Kanc - a famous highway in NH for the fall colors. And there are lots of other attractions in the area - lots of rivers and vistas and things like that - as well as the historic Albany Covered Bridge which is a must see (less than 10 miles away). It's free to visit and park - be aware there aren't any restrooms in the area. Google maps will take you right to it - but signal is nonexistent in the area so I recommend to download offline maps before you come. Sadly, on my last visit, someone had put graffiti in several places on the boulder- but a park ranger was there to clean it up. Hopefully they were able to get it removed. I'll never understand why people feel the need to deface natural wonders like that - breaks my heart every time.
