La Gruta is absolutely beautiful, and I completely understand the hype. The setting alone makes it…read moresuch a unique experience, and everyone we interacted with was kind and welcoming. We came as part of a tour after visiting the pyramids, so unfortunately we were on a pretty tight schedule. We arrived around 12 PM and were scheduled to be picked up at 2 PM. We communicated that to our server, but our food didn't arrive until around 1:30, which meant we basically had to inhale our meal before running back to meet our tour. I really wish we'd had more time to sit and enjoy everything. Now my one personal grievance: WHERE IS THE SPICY SALSA?! We're in Mexico, I need to feel something!! I asked our server why nothing was spicy, and he told me it was because of tourism. -.- I ended up paying extra for them to roast some peppers for me just so I could get some heat. Spice crisis aside, the food was delicious. I started with a bowl of consomé, which absolutely hit the spot after climbing the pyramids, and I had the mole verde for my main dish. My partner ordered the steak, and we both really enjoyed our meals. One thing to keep in mind is the pricing. It's definitely on the touristy side and closer to what you'd expect to pay at a restaurant in the U.S. You're paying for the setting and overall experience in addition to the food, so don't necessarily come expecting inexpensive Mexico prices. One of my favorite touches came at the end of the meal. They give you a candle to place among the rocks, representing a new beginning. I thought that was such a sweet and meaningful way to end the experience. Overall, the food was amazing and the space is genuinely gorgeous. I would recommend experiencing it at least once--just give yourself plenty of time, expect U.S.-ish pricing, and if you're a spicy girl like me, prepare yourself for the tourist-level salsa situation.

The food was decent, and for around $25 USD, it felt basic. You're mainly paying for the experience…read moreof dining inside a cave. The chilaquiles were bland and slightly warm. The vanilla pan dulce also tasted a little stale. On the other hand, the fruta mixta was fresh and one of the better parts of the meal. The setting is unique, which makes this place stand out. Eating inside a cave creates a cool atmosphere that you do not get at a typical restaurant. However, the food does not match the price point.

We all loved the black mole the best. Almond mole was the worst- don't get it. I did not order it, but waitress may have misheard. Service was good. Food did come out warm which was strange, but we ate it nonetheless.

We started with complimentary fresh salsas and a savory cheesy bite. Very nice! One of the salsas had a real spicy kick, which I enjoyed. Also split and shared: - Sopa de Lima, a regional chicken and lime soup. Loved this! It was a light, brothy dish, and felt very nourishing. Delicious. Also tried adding some of the fresh salsas (as suggested). - Enchiladas Mole Negro. I'm glad I tried this one! Made me feel like I've never actually had authentic mole in my life. This was really rich, with complex flavor. Was sweet as well, and savory. - Tacos Cochinita Pibil. Yummy! Loved this with the salsas as well. Which, by the way, were refilled! A friend got the grasshopper appetizer as well which turned out to be a pretty sizeable plate full. So we all got to try that as well! Not bad not bad. Not quite what I was expecting, but I was happy to try it! (I thought they'd be salty and crunchy; actually they were softer and tasted a bit tea like. Leisurely and relaxed dining. Nice drinks too. So many agua Fresca options! I got a guava lime one.
