I get in and all the personnel is clearly not Italian, a warning sign. We order two classics, ossobuco di vitello su risotto alla milanese and cotoletta di vitello fritta in burro chiarificato. We felt at home immediately, although our Italian is minimal and no one there spoke much English. We ordered a good bottle of red wine from their extensive wine list (Avigliano di Campagne, 22 euros) and I started with an appetizer of squid in a sauce of ink and red pepper with grilled polenta. The polenta was light and perfectly grilled, the squid bodies and tentacles tender and the sauce rich, delicate and a little spicy from the red pepper. My wife had lamb chops lightly breaded and pan fried, perfectly cooked rare, not fatty, five shops. That is a lot of lamb. It was served with a salad of raw asparagus in a mild mulberry vinegar -- it was perfect. I had a piece of sturgeon pan fried then finished in the broiler, topped with fresh dill fronds. I can't recall having a better prepared and fresher fish in my life. It was perfectly tender, with a bottom slightly caramelized, and the slightest hint of pink in the middle. It was served with a torte of potatoes and baby greens, clean and tasty if unsurprising. We finished with a glass of riserva grappa, quite good, and a perfectly prepared fondant de chocolat over raspberry coulis. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you want a classic dessert. The entire dinner for two was around 80 euro, a very reasonable price for food and wine of this quality. We may well go back tomorrow night, unless we can find another nice place with as interesting a menu.
