On the way to the Michigan UP, as you pass north of Green Bay, you spot a sign that reads "Better…read moreBuy Brosig's" and a picture of an ear of corn. Good advice to be taken seriously by novice Wisconsin roadside corn buyers. During the peak corn harvest season of August through early September, you will see lots of fresh vegetable & corn signs pop up all over Wisconsin. These often lead you to gas stations, empty lots with tents and tables set up, or just a produce-laden pick-up truck with some shirtless, unshaven farmer guy with bad teeth. You have to be certain you get good corn. Some places don't let you pick through their corn and all you get is a "mystery bag" with a dozen ears for a certain $. Then you look later and find it's some dried-up horse-corn with withered tassels. Others have undersized and immature corn that is underdeveloped and flavorless. Now located in Crivitz (formerly in Pound, WI) Brosig's consistently has the freshest, biggest tri-color corn we've come across. They have a roadside location and a smaller one in a gas station parking lot a little farther north in the same town. On our way to Michigan and on the trip home, we always stop and get a bag of fresh Brosig's corn. Brosig's puts 13 to a bag themselves, but don't fear finding any bad corn in there! They also carry other fresh vegetables like giant bell peppers, 2-foot long zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, leeks, and other locally grown farm goodies, most of which were picked the same day. The stand is right alongside US-141 in Crivitz, with a sign about 1/2-mile away. You'll be amazed at the volume of business Brosig's gets from passing tourists like us, as well as loyal locals. Pull over to the side of the road and check it out. The folks working at the farmstand have that honest-to-goodness, laid-back rural personality you find out there but rarely encounter in the city. Come by, get some corn or zucchini, chat with them, even ask them where they recommend going for the best fish fry or something.

The lodging was very comfortable, Reba's three meals a day were all excellent, and on top of that we saw many species of game. All four from our party were able to harvest Russian Boar within four hours. Our time frame was very tight due to travel problems but Don and Tyler made sure we knew exactly where to hunt, how to size game, and upon harvesting our animals were right there to take pictures and get our meat processed. I had been once before, but my in-laws were visiting from England and we just had to take them here. They agreed that it was the classic, small town, American market. We all loved our visit. It's quite big inside and very open/spacious to move around. Beyond their famous cherry pies, jams, and butters, you'll find their fresh produce, local cheeses (yumm), and a unique selection of artisan goods (I'm obsessed). Also if you're an apple lover, you'll have come to the right place. They were sampling their fresh picked options, and we of course left with a big bag to take home. Also, all things fall-esque like cider donuts, pumpkin pancake mix, and unique fudge. Oh anddd they have this great little outdoor section for kiddos, equip with a swing set, big sandbox, handful of rideable bikes/cars, and a cute little rope maze in the woods. My son loved exploring. With seasonal activities like cherry-picking, it's a perfect spot to savor the region's flavors and enjoy a classic Midwest farm experience!

And beyond that, they sell a lot of other merchandise, food and otherwise. Lots of salsa, spreads, relishes, jerky, and so on, but they don't have any recipes or food suggestions near them and I don't know how to use them. The peach, cherry, etc. salsas seemed interesting but they were too sweet (and not spicy enough) to eat with chips or something, but I'm not sure how I would want to use it otherwise and I don't want to have to do the work to figure out how. But near the entrance, they do have a little counter where various relishes and jams are available for tasting. I did buy some apple cider donuts from here, and they certainly looked more appetizing than most of the other markets we stopped at. The cider was disappointing--it looked more like juice than cider--so I skipped that. And once I had one of the donuts upon returning home, they were pretty good even a day or two later, and I"m not one who usually loves apple cider donuts. There's lots of parking here, so you'll probably have no issue there. If you have little ones, there's a small playground near the eastern end of the property. They're closed Sunday, so plan accordingly.
