I almost never write reviews, but this experience absolutely deserved one…read more I accidentally booked my 8-year-old daughter's private surf lesson for the wrong Friday. I called the day before the lesson I thought we had booked, expecting there was no chance they could fit us in. Ben, the co-owner, couldn't have been kinder. He immediately said, "No problem," rearranged things, and even taught her lesson himself. From the moment we arrived, I knew we were in great hands. The safety instruction was clear, thorough, hands-on, and incredibly well done. It was obvious that every instructor has years of experience and genuinely cares about keeping students safe while making sure they have an amazing time. The entire atmosphere was calm, welcoming, and laid back. As a parent, I felt completely comfortable watching my daughter head out into the water. Harlowe is naturally a little shy, and Ben met her exactly where she was. He built her confidence from the start, made her feel comfortable every step of the way, and somehow had her smiling, laughing, and catching wave after wave. She had an absolute blast. I've taken surf lessonsp over the years, and this was, without question, the best experience we've ever had. If you're looking for surf lessons on the Big Island, this is the place. Professional, patient, safety-first, and genuinely fun. Thank you, Ben, for making one of Harlowe's favorite memories of our trip. We can't wait to come back!

This review is for a weeklong "high performance" surfboard rental. I wanted to chime in here for…read moretwo reasons: first, because other reviews don't discuss the weekly or high-performance rentals. And second, because this place has some less-than-stellar reviews that I feel might not be totally warranted. The staff members I spoke with during pick-up and drop-off were both super friendly-- way more so than I expected. The board itself was not exactly "high performance" compared to my favorite boards back home, but it was definitely better than the Wavestorms and NSPs you commonly see for rent on beachfront stands. Can you do better elsewhere? Maybe, probably, if you put some legwork into finding alternatives. But there aren't that many other options if you're on the northwest side of the Big Island. Anyway more about the rental itself: The boards are epoxy but somehow the one I got was not as chattery and stiff as other epoxy boards I've used in the past. They're not exactly "real" hand-shaped (or even hand-finished) boards you would get from a "core" surf shop, but they seem a lot better than the average mass-market pop-out. They also said I could come and swap out for a different design during my rental period if I wanted as well. There were short boards, mid lengths, and longboards. Thrusters, single fins, and 1+2s mostly. Not gonna replace my quiver back home, but a totally fine experience all around.

At the top you have the lookout which offers beautiful views. Now for the fun. Down THE steepest…read moreroad in North America (officially), there is an entire valley. At one point in time over 10,000 people lived down there. Now something like only 50 or 100 do, and doing things like taro farming. I think a tsunami hit decades ago and convinced most people to leave. Some stayed though which makes it interesting. Of course the main attraction is the black sand beach here, which is a good mile or 2 long. To get down there, you must go down that road and then take a right on a dirt road at the bottom. You can't go down there without a four wheel drive. The road is a bit torn up in places so even if you have 4WD, I don't recommend doing it unless you know what you are doing. You can then either hike down it or pay a local to drive you down and up. The beach itself is great. There are nice waves here but the currents are decent, so don't go in unless you are a decently strong swimmer. Some good waves for body surfing which I loved. Water isn't too cold but still on the cool side. The sand itself is very fine grain, unlike the black sand beach along Road to Hana on Maui. I enjoy this a lot more. There is a river that flows between the sections and you have to cross it on foot to get to the rest of the beach and also the hiking paths that go up the other side of the valley. There are some interesting foot paths with tropical trees level with the beach too. Anyway, do NOT try and cross this river where the mouth is and a bunch of rocks. You will fall and get hurt probably. Instead, go up some 50 or 100 feet (if memory serves me) and cross. The bottom is mostly sand and gets about waist deep for a person who is about 5'10". There are some rocks so be careful but this is much, much better than trying to cross at the mouth. Now getting back up is the uhh fun part. You could try and find a local to pay for this or do it on foot. I mentioned this is THE steepest road in North America. That's not a joke. It legitimately is. It averages 25% grade and is as high as 40% in some areas. Pictures won't do it justice. If you attempt this in foot like we did, have plenty of water and make sure you stretch before. It will take awhile and your legs will burn. Don't even try this if you don't have plenty of water and you aren't in decent physical shape at the time.

Brad is the only reason this review contains anything positive…read more We rented four tanks and weights during unsettled weather. Brad handled the situation exactly as a dive professional should. He checked certifications, discussed conditions, made sure we understood the risks, and confirmed we were prepared to abort the dive if conditions were unsafe. Professional, responsible, and respectful. Then there was Tracy. She was rude, dismissive, condescending, and openly unpleasant. I also heard the way she spoke about other customers when they were not present. Based on what I personally witnessed, this went beyond bad customer service. In scuba diving, attitude can become a safety issue. Divers must feel comfortable asking questions, raising equipment concerns, questioning conditions, and saying they are not comfortable. An employee who makes customers feel stupid or unwelcome for doing that can discourage exactly the communication that keeps people safe. I would not personally trust Tacy in a safety-critical interaction after what I witnessed. I also personally heard her make a comment to the effect of, "just take it from the lost and found." I am not accusing her of stealing anything. I am stating what I personally heard, and I found the comment inappropriate and concerning for someone working in a business trusted with customers' equipment and property. The contrast with Brad was dramatic. He handled the same circumstances professionally and treated us like adults. Afterward, I spoke with other local divers who described similar negative experiences with Tina. I cannot independently verify their experiences, so they can speak for themselves. I can only speak for mine. I believe management should seriously consider whether Tina Davis should continue representing this business. If this were my company, I would terminate her employment. I have also submitted these concerns to PADI Quality Management / Quality Assurance for independent review. For the avoidance of doubt, this review also puts management and ownership on notice of the safety and judgment concerns I personally observed. If a future incident involves similar conduct, ignored diver concerns, or unsafe shortcuts, I would be willing to testify truthfully under oath about what I personally witnessed, heard, and reported here. Brad deserves recognition. Tacy is the reason this review is one star.
