Most of their merchandise is heavily discounted in preparation for their closing, but they had very little left when I visited this past weekend. It's too bad they're closing, because they definitely were a unique concept store (books and food). Run by the next few weeks if you want to go through their remaining merchandise!

Hey, I work hard! I deserve fancy boots! Don't be intimidated by the crazy art objects or high prices. Maryam and her staff are all super nice and helpful, and the unusual interior design elements (metal bracelets sitting on the floor, beat-up wooden tables, etc) are inspirational. I almost skipped this shop because I thought, "what could a small shop specializing in photography…read morebooks have for me?" Glad I stopped in! It's actually the only "book" store out of several I visited this weekend in which I bought something! It is small, but not the smallest shop I've been in. Larger than a place like Casa Magazines (which I also love). It is mostly photography books, both new and used. Some "zines," not to be confused with magazines. A few books as well. I stay in hotels about 240 nights a year for business, so I bought a cool, unconventional book about hotels, with a beautiful fabric cover, with lots of colors, remarking on the weird and beautiful interactions you have or overhear in that environment. They had urban photography, more sexual stuff (like really sexual stuff), music and pop culture, and more niche genres. A little something for everyone. And the owner was super nice! Others have commented on how they have great conversations with her about the volumes they carry. She is really knowledgeable and helpful. Seems to know about everything they have! Prices aren't "cheap," but reasonable for the product you're purchasing. They also have a nearby gallery space, and that's worthwhile to checkout. I passed by the next day on the way to something else, and someone was outside with a volume they just purchased, having the owner take a photo of them with their new, proud acquisition. You can tell this spot is part of the community. Glad I didn't pass it up.

David (the owner) and Miwa are knowledgeable about the artists whose books they feature, and are only too happy to offer personalized recommendations. And Miwa is also well-versed in the subject, especially on Japanese photographers of the documentary / Provoke movement. Dashwood is also a book publisher and attracts some high-caliber artists. Photo books are quite expensive but Dashwood is great with stocking up on signed copies of new books that are a bit more affordable if you are a collector and care to follow what is being published. That reminds me, I am due for my next visit.

I went in aware that you can touch (or spray) the bottles, but I wasn't expecting the only interaction from staff to be to ask everyone who came in if they had been to the store before (a chance for them to tell you the rules, of course). No questions about what you're looking for, no offer of help while you browse, just general monitoring to make sure no one is touching what they should not. I asked perfumes were exclusive to Stele and was told "not sure but most everything"...and saw a ton of lines that are not exclusive. The stones aren't a very good vehicle to capture scents (probably why I've never seen them at any other perfume store) and the layout is by house without any general descriptions or information on the brand. The perfume details and pricing are on the back of the stones. Overall not somewhere to go unless you know exactly what you want.
