I tried to make light out of it in the moment because I didn't know if the kids knew exactly what was going on. For one they didn't dig the hole big enough. So instead of pausing and fixing it they decided to just keep trying to push the coffin in. Then we had to move Dad off of the top and the men in my family had to redigg it. I feel it was very disrespectful to even have to see." They said it was a technical difficulty and didn't offer our family anything to make it right. They also said it was a pine casket when it was actually just a cardboard box. Traumatized and disappointed.

I always used to think of it as a spooky old graveyard, especially when I rode my creaky old bike…read morepast it around dusk in late autumn. It can seem even spookier when there's lots of snow and the old iron fence is easy to walk into because the sidewalk is covered. Over the years, though, I've grown to love how peaceful it is even though hundreds of thousands of college-football fans tromp right past it on their way to the bookstore. At this point, I know a few people buried here, including my dear old South Bend landlord Bill (RIP), who remains the best landlord I've ever had. It's also interesting and kind of eerie to see the headstones of friends who have bought plots already but who are still alive. It's a tiny cemetery, but it's also difficult to find the famous people you're looking for just by going up and down the rows. Try to do it anyway, because it just feels weird using a phone in a cemetery, especially one this old. It's not dilapidated!

Located in Goshen, Indiana, Oakridge Cemetery had its earliest known burial in 1832 and was…read moreofficially founded by First Methodist Church in 1839. In 1859, First Methodist passed it to the city of Goshen. The cemetery has 40+ acres of land and contains quite a few historic burials including eight mayors of Goshen along with veterans from every major American war. I had the opportunity to visit Oakridge Cemetery during one of my Tenderness Tour events in Elkhart County when, somewhat unexpectedly, the cemetery was actually part of my route because the trail I was using went right through it. As I tend to enjoy visiting cemeteries, I ended up spending quite a bit of time in the cemetery (and ultimately ran late getting to where I was actually going). The cemetery has several interesting sections - Grand Army of the Republic, Potter's Field, Sharis Israel (a Jewish congregation), International Organization of Odd Fellows, and Eastern Orthodox among them. The cemetery has quite a bit of pavement within the boundaries of the cemetery and is pretty easy to wheel through. It's a large cemetery, for sure, and there are some inclines that can make visiting some graves a little difficult. Oakridge is still a city-run cemetery. In addition to locals, there are three known Congressmen here and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient (Ruel M. Johnson). In 2019, the cemetery added a natural burial option for cremains called Forest of Remembrance. It makes burial a more natural experience and is surprisingly affordable. There's no denying this is an older cemetery. However, it is well maintained by Goshen and it continues to be used with space available to this day. I found my visit fascinating and it's actually an ideal place for prayer, contemplation, or simply walking/wheeling through.

I went in several times to go over the details as my dad was a stage 4 cancer patient at the time, and was only given weeks to live. Every question I had was treated as an inconvenience. The last time I was in Niles, Michigan, was last fall with my dad. He loved the random drive we took through autumn leaves and along winding rivers with surprising islands and over hills I didn't know Michigan had. When we drove by this adorable little Catholic cemetery, my dad made me make a U-turn. We marveled at the tiny, vaguely Russian-looking chapel in the middle. Of course, the chapel was locked, but that just added to the mystery. It's a really small cemetery, or a larger graveyard, whichever you prefer. It's so small, in fact, that while it does have paved roads so that cars can get close to graves, those roads are so narrow that if you park on the road itself, you'll be blocking traffic. I have no idea what they do for graveside services; do people park outside the cemetery and walk in? It's affiliated with but not physically connected to nearby (but somewhat difficult to find) St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/st-mary-of-the-immaculate-conception-catholic-church-niles-2?osq=St+Mary+of+the+Immaculate+Conception ), which deserves a visit as well. Some cemeteries are spooky. This one is not. Or at least it's not spooky in the middle of the day. Whatever the case, I usually enjoy visiting cemeteries. They're so odd and beautiful and sad and hopeful and often historical. *Things happened, as they say, or--more accurately--the Women's Selection Committee once again awarded Ohio State a home bid to host even though they haven't made it into the Sweet 16 in two (and now three) straight years of hosting.
