It was a rainy Sunday afternoon so I looked for men's shoe stores in the area with a high rating, and Vernon Powell popped up. Quite frankly, I'd never heard of them before and decided to check them out. This is the type of shoe store where the attendant has to take your choice and bring out those shoes in your size. I was promptly waited upon by Kimmie (spelling?) who was most cordial and attentive ( in contradistinction to the young woman at the register with a flat affect who looked like she hated that she had a job). I picked out 3 pair, one of which they did not have instructions stock but will get in for me tomorrow. I don't mind paying for quality, and initial comfort is a must, and this store did it for me on both counts. I brought two pair home and will stop in tomorrow to pick up my third pair. Kimmie advised joining their rewards program in which you get a $50 coupon after spending $350 which isn't difficult to do! I'm most pleased with my experience at Vernon Powell and now that I have this experience shall return there when next I need shoes. I can't comment on their woman's section nor their foot-related paraphernalia, but they've got it all. A nice, "old-fashioned" shoe store!

When I bought it back to the store the manager said that she couldn't do anything about it and gave me an email address to contact. The email address was nonexistent and she was Not helpful at all. Michael carries brand names which are not readily found at the outlets such as Rodd and Gunn and Castaway of Nantucket. He also carries brands which are designed and manufactured under various French labels. The shop is small so Michael's selections of clothing and brand names have to be spot on...and they are. I found Michael to be very helpful in explaining the size, cut, and quality of clothing labels with which I was unfamiliar. My initial reaction to his clothing selections focused on a much younger demographic. I was, however, pleasantly surprised that mature men can wear his clothing with equal style and fit. (It also helps that a Golden Retriever greets you at the door as I have six Goldens). The sartorial offerings seem to change frequently thus suggesting regular visits. If only cognac or wine were served casually weekend afternoons to serious customers...life would be more wonderful! I found the best means to connect with Michael to inquire about specific brands is through social media under the shop's name. This worked well in a recent purchase. I would encourage anyone visiting RB to visit MGT and Toggery on Baltimore Avenue. Much has changed in the RB I knew as a child. But one thing that RB has always provided its visitors and residents is a fine selection of unique shops and shopping experiences. It is important to support small and local shop owners. These barns are very good for late style clothing, especially the basics, like socks, U'ees, sweaters and the like. My wife is required to wear black pants, cranberry shirt for her job. Marshalls is an excellent store for finding these type of things at a great price. She found a couple pair of slacks that fit well, and then filled up the shopping cart with multiples of men's socks, Columbia briefs and Tees for the stepson, brother and yours truly. Service is decent. Nice to be able to avoid inflation by purchasing such basics at yesterday's prices. Five Stars for concept and performance.
