When I came into Redding, I knew I wanted to get Birria, so I looked up a few places that offered different types of it and landed on Ortega's Mexican Restaurant; they offered Birria taco's Barria Torta's and also burritos. I decided to go with the Birria Torta since I had not had that before; try it you will not be disappointed. The Torta has tasty Barria sauce, cheese, goat, lettuce, and some cheese sauce. I believe that is worth it all. It also has a nice spice with a large piece of jalapeños but not too much for those who cannot handle it, and then on the side, you get a small bag of chips with your choice of hot, medium, or mild salsa. You want to try this next time you're in town, and you will thank me later. If your a Birria fan or a torta fan, this puts the best of best together in a mouthwatering sandwich. read more

We were in at about 1:30/2:00pm for lunch. We were immediately greeted upon entering by a friendly young woman behind the counter and told that we could pick our own seat. We had a nice young man as our server (I didn't get his name). He was very friendly, alert and attentive to us throughout our visit. Family-owned little joint in PC. Very sweet people. It's not a fancy place but the people are always kind and we love their food. Great breakfast burrito (it's HUGE, and add avocado to it and you will not regret!) I am a fan of their enchilada sauce. Typically, I find it too tangy and acidic at other restaurants, but theirs is just right! Tasty beans and rice. Love their carne asada tacos. The steak is perfectly diced in small pieces. Love their chips and salsa. The chips are perfectly thin and salted and their SALSA is SO YUMMY. Not spicy at all just great fresh flavor. Perfect mix of chunky and saucy. read more

Served first 10 minutes later: chicken fajita burrito: boiled shredded chicken, no seasoning or flavor, beans thinly spread, cheese so sparse undetectable. ate a few bites and took home for the dog, she ate it. 1 soda $30 waiter was very nice, and as prompt as could be considering the kitchen help determined the time span. We love Ortega's. We live in Millville and come probably once a week. We haven't tried something that we haven't liked. Fajitas are good, taquitos, burritos, tamales, all delicious. And the best part, the SALSA. Oh my goodness I love their salsa. It's so fresh and delicious, and they have a bar set up so you can grab more whenever you want. Highly recommend. :) read more

Ordered a carne asada burrito to go. When I got home i cut it in half and didn't see any carne....MEAT. So i opened it up and you literally could count the pieces of "carne". Took a video because I've NEVER had this happen. When i called them, they just said they portion out their meat. The burrito w/wet sauce on the side was $15. Wow!! What a great Mexican restraunt! Today was my first time eating here. We had been up cutting our Christmas tree and everyone was hungry. On a whim, my wife suggested Ortega's because it was close to home and, surprise!! they served an authentic specialty we loved, Birria. Now, Mexican quisine is my favorite. I've been to Mexico many times, I have Mexican family, I'd think I was Mexican in a prior life if I believed in that sort of thing... It's no wonder that I love Mexican food. So I was surprised to find Birria on the menu of this little place in Palo Cedro. Anyway, the food was great. Everything but the tortillas appeared to be homemade. The rice had a definate regional character to it. The Birria was really, really good. My son's fiancé is Mexican. She gave it her full approval. My wife had the Carnitas Plate, my son had Carne Asada tacos and my daughter a burrito. We all agreed the food was outstanding. The service was good as well. I belive the gentleman serving us was the owner. My only two caveats would be that the portions, while not stingy, are not as sumptuous as one might expect. The second is on the nitpicky side - the refried beans were on the runny side and a bit bland. I added some salt, Tapatío and mixed in some rice and it was fine, but everyone noted they could've been better. Other than that, our first impression was very good. My husband and I came in for some dinner, with our two young boys. We were greeted by the friendliest people, and the service was wonderful. The food came out quickly and was delicious. They checked on us frequently, and it was a lovely experience ( as always ). My young toddler started getting fussy and just as we were ready to leave our beer behind, a lovely women came out to see what she could do to help with the baby ( cookie? Fruit? ) She brought us a bowl of fruit, and we were able to enjoy 5 more minutes of a wonderful dinner. Called in a order for 10 tacos and rice and beans when I went to pick it up. The order came to over $70 I noticed a sign for a special 10 tacos for $19.99. I asked if I could get the special and was told no that's not the way you ordered. So for an extra $50 I got rice and beans. Never again will I Patronize this place. I've been eating here on a regular basis for 6-7 years now and my experiences have always been good, The food has always been fresh, the chips are the crispiest and light, I wish I could find the this good are the grocery store. The portions have always been very generous and everything has been prepared just right. I would say that Ortega's is a must do for anyone who likes Mexican Food. I assume it's under new ownership, because everything is different. Everything is better. My chili verde was excellent. TL's cheese enchiladas were very good. Our waitress was friendly and competent. The norteño music was cool.... After I read Ruben's review a while back, I put Ortega's on my 'must try' list. I am so glad that I finally did. I feel like I keep saying that 'I've found a new favorite Mexican food place.' Maybe in my eagerness to find the tasty, I settle? Ortega's is so good. Guess what? It's my new favorite. Closer to what I was used to growing up in the Bay Area. Their Beef tamales, cheese enchiladas, and fish tacos are to die for. The food actually makes me want to branch out from my usual Chili Reno with rice and beans, and sample the whole menu. The only slightly negative thing I can say, is that their chips aren't as good as other places. Ortega's a little hole in the wall 10 minutes outside of town in Palo Cedro, but well worth the drive. The cheap prices compensate the amount that you will spend on gas. read more

I don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet. My dad and I have been coming here at least twice a month for the last six months. But, two words are all it takes to describe my 5-star rating: goat burritos. Try the #6 (Chile Verde) or #7 (Chile Colorado) with goat. Fantastic flavor, perfect texture, and wonderful service. The cook even puts up with my father's incredibly silly (and at times embarrassing) requests to mix the goat and the chicken together, stuff the crazy combination in a burrito, and then smother it in both the green and red sauces (it's actually surprisingly delicious). Aside from the wonderful staff who always asks if we would like more water, more beer, or simply: "is everything ok?"--the restaurant is quite cozy, and the decor, though kitsch-y, actually works--something about it feels very home-like. I am addicted to the carne asada quesadillas. In response to Ruben's reveiw, the $3.50 minimum purchase is so people don't take advantage of the free all you can eat chips & salsa bar. I have been dining at this restaurant before the new owners took over, and I see that free chips & salsa abuse, (people go in and order one drink so they get free chips & salsa), I don't blame the new owners for that minimum thing. They are the sweetest people, and they do a lot for the community outside of feeding us. I just have to say, they have the best authentic Mexican food around, and the prices are so awesome it makes it affordable to eat out. One thing you should know, the google map is not correct on this listing-- Ortega's restaurant is actually SOUTH of the 44 exit on Deschutes road. They are about one block south after you get off the highway on the east side of the road. read more

Food is cold, reheated and quick. Beans and rice are very bland, salsa tastes like it came from a jar, the only fresh tasting bite I had was the orange slice they put on my plate. Ortega's is good but not great. It's a mom and pop owned business that I like to support. However ever since the kids have started working there , I feel like the service has gone down hill . These kids/ young adults would rather chat with each other or their friends instead of taking your order or coming by to check and see if you need anything. I went there for dinner last night. I sat down ordered a Corona but they were out of Coronas . Ok ??? I'll take a Pacifico.... uhhhh were out of that too . A Mexican restaurant no Mexican beer ? Ok , so I order a Sierra Nevada. I sat there 20 /25 min before I finally asked if someone was going to take my order. One of the guys working says yeah I'll be with you in a second. 3/5 minutes go by . I get up pay for my beer and leave . The place was not busy maybe 4 other couples. For now on I'll drive to Redding or Anderson to get Mexican food. I know a lot of my friend and people I know won't go to Ortega's because the service is horrible and it always takes so long . Hopefully the owners can retrain their staff or fire them and get people who will help their businesses and not hurt it. One last thing 10$ for a bean and cheese burrito is a bit ridiculous read more
