In response to the rude coward who reviews as Jerome L, I was behind him in line with several other…read morehappy patrons. He was rude to a very nice clerk behind the counter. He screamed, "F___ YOU" in an unprovoked verbal assault and cowardly act as he walked away from the counter. I'm sure he wouldn't have the guts to say that to a man. The clerk he referred to has always been professional, curteous and helpful, not only to myself, but to all customers. In fact, this store has a great, professional and friendly staff overall. If you happen to know this coward, ask him to apologize for his rudeness. Or maybe he can go to the East Arlington store up the street with prices much higher than Contans'

I was in Chicago the day before Valentine's Day 2007 and had to fly back in that huge snowstorm. So…read moreI needed to get a bottle of wine for my boyfriend and me. I went into there and was casually looking at the bottles, not knowing what the fuck I was looking at, just trying to base how good a wine is by price. So I go to pick up a bottle and I knock another bottle over with my huge puffy coat. Crap. There was another woman standing nearby and I thought she was a customer, but her lack of jacket didn't seem to tip me off. I kind of gave her a little "shhh. This is just between you me and the wall of wine" sort of look. She loudly yells "Walter! We need a clean up by the wine bottles." Walter or whatever the fuck his name is comes with his mop in like 3 seconds, like he's been waiting for this moment and looks and says "This is a TWENTY dollar bottle of wine! TWENTY DOLLARS!" And I'm like "Well, I don't drop the cheap stuff. heh heh." *crickets chirping* So I buy a $30 bottle of wine to compensate for the bottle because I was going to try to find something $10 worth [Nothing but the best!] and I get carded. Crap. No ID. Oh shit! I was at the airport yesterday and I think I had it in my back pocket when we went through check-in. "Uhmmmm...I don't have my ID, but I have my Tufts Health card that has my birth date on it and here's my college ID from the late 90s with me with bleached hair so obviously, I'm old enough." She let me buy the bottle. I went home, uncorked and the only food I could make were instant potatoes and spinach-filled faux nuggets. Classy. So I got a replacement ID a week or so later and then a week after that, I'm taking all of my clothes off of this chair to do laundry [I'm kind of a slob] and out plops my ID in all it's over-21-ness. So if you look like me and are under 21, let me know. We'll discuss a price.

Wanted to add to the review from 7/28/2021 about slightly shady business practices by warning…read morepeople that this store intentionally does not put prices on their beer. (Not sure about anything else, I've only ever bought beer here.) These days beer can be $14 for 4 or $25 for 4 and it would be nice to know how much things are before you purchase them. But you can't here. Obviously they are trying to get people to spend more than they would otherwise through this practice. I asked the people behind the counter about this and they made a bunch of excuses (we change our stock too frequently), but I was like, "every other liquor store can do this?" Turns out not displaying the price of items is actually illegal according to Attorney General's Item Pricing Regulation 940 C.M.R. 3.13. Will not be patronizing again.

Upon entering, it is a very small shop and I don't know if it was the owner or what... But he literally kept asking me if I needed help. And I told him I was all set. And he kept watching me the entire time. And it got really stressful. I'm a content creator and was in the middle of planning recipes and because they have a small selection. I was seeing what I could work with. But it's like nobody is allowed to think and take a second. Then his son came out and asked me if I needed help... and I said no thank you. And so the son just stared at me. So frustrated, I purchased just one bottle as I felt uncomfortable and didn't want to be in the store anymore. Before I even fully made it to the register, he's asking me for id... almost as if I wasn't of age (which I get often, but especially if I'm taking my time). The son was monitoring my transaction as his dad rang me up. I will never be back.
