This is a classic old school soda shop. They have hot dogs and burgers and the like along with sundaes and milkshakes. It is definitely cheap eats with a fun old-timey experience with it.They only accept cash! I ordered a sundae which just had the Hershey syrup and canned cherry toppings, plus some cool whip on top. Yummy but nothing really fancy. It's more fun to go for the vibe. Still a cool spot to take younger kids, but not sure I would come back just for the food. But it's cheap and a fun memory read more

I'm sad to say I didn't actually try a root beer float here as I thought I'd have a chance to come back more than once - but as desserts go, the Reese's blizzard type ice cream they did was great! I was in town visiting with family during Lakefest weekend, and was lucky enough to stop here for lunch while they were about to do the hot dog eating contest in their parking lot, so it was a fun time - lol. Besides my dessert, I got the bacon cheeseburger and we all split some onion rings and fries. They were very crispy and the onion rings were thin and tasted good if you're into those type of onion rings! Cute little retro spot and you can even just drive up and have your order brought to your car, or go up to the wind and sit at a picnic table. Right on the lake! This is typical hot dog stand type food, so I'd rate it as such. read more

You get what you pay for at this place, which is extremely affordable. Honestly, I wouldn't dine here if the prices were any higher. I've visited twice during my stay in Culver, IN, and both times the food was hot, promptly served, and error-free. While I'm not typically a fan of root beer, theirs has a unique taste that stands out. It is sweeter and less carbonated. Maybe less carbonation makes it taste sweeter. Overall, it's a fun experience to pull up to this Sonic-like restaurant in a golf cart and order something quick and tasty. read more

I have been going here for over 40 years. And it's always a delight. The root beer here is some of the best you will ever drink. Take it home in a jug and you'll drink it within 24 hours. It is wonderful. The main thing I remember even as a kid is the root beer floats. Take one to go, walk over to the lake and indulge in the goodness. Still as authentic as it was years ago. We stopped by on our way up to Michigan. We wanted Coney Dogs and Rootbeer. The rootbeer is a little sweeter and more vanilla front with less carbonation than I prefer. Waited 35 min to get soft serve, two shakes & large order of cheese fries, while 3 cars that came after us (which ordered hot food), got taken care of and left. When I asked how much longer, the girls response was "oh we've been super busy and we have new people working so it's just taking us longer." No apology, just excuses! When we first arrived in Culver 3 years ago, my fiance told me "get in the car we have to get some root bear from the root bear stand" I had no idea I was about to experience heaven. The root beer stand is an amazing staple, where you can get a root beer frostie and turn into a 10 year old, slurping on root beer and ice cream, with some fries. The place is run by kids, home for the summer, who are adorable and come out to you car, parked. They take cash only - and DANG is it worth it. We got a gallon of root beer and one of everything a week ago, and I think we made it back to the house a few blocks away with about half of our order. My family has been here since 1963, the year i was born. One of my most favorable memory is this drive up. I LOVE THE ROOT BEER FLOAT, ( and can you believe ... i dont drink root beer) Lol Lol. The fish sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. Although it isn't the exact same every time I order it, it is always delicious. They also have the crinkle cut fries, which I like and the Cole slaw is really good... The flavor is somewhere between KFC and Long John Silver's. read more

My go-to is the chicken tenders. I am not usually a crinkle cut french fry gal, but these are not squishy oven like fries, they are delicious crispy fries. I even tried a peanut butter flurry this weekend and I have to say it was a mistake to not order this on earlier visits. When we are visiting the area, The Rootbeer Stand is always on our list of stops. We love it here! It is a short walk away from the beach at Lake Maxincuckee and has a great view of the water as well. We love the cheeseburgers, all beef hotdogs, and french fries. The food is always cooked just right and the price can't be beat. We also love to get the "blizzard" like ice cream treats as well! You can add all the classic toppings like cookie dough, peanut butter cups, and oreos. The toppings to ice cream ratio is perfect and delicious on a hot day. When you pull up to the stand, a waitress will come to your car window and take your order. Or, you can choose to park your car and order from the window as well. There are multiple picnic tables to sit at but, stay clear of the seats near the trash cans! There are always lots of bees trying to sneak some of the sweet foods :) Oh, one more thing, make sure you bring CASH since they do not accept credit or debit cards. This place holds many childhood memories and I'm glad I get to continue those with my own children. Its the perfect place to go if you're craving some good ole' fashioned "fast food" with a home made taste. We will continue to come back here as long as the doors stay open! read more

Homemade Rootbeer and $1 coney dogs on Tuesday. Can't beat that! I love it that it's cash only. Credit cards take away that nostalgic feel of the place. Orders are taken at your car with pen & paper. Oh and I was there that day the two girls left the bad review. If you order the wrong thing, don't come up to the window and have a bad attitude against the poor girl, demanding free food. Not a bad place to grab a bite. Stick to the basics. The pizza burger, was a disappointment to my friends. But the bacon cheese burger was good, but the buns are weak and fell apart half way through. If you go, take an empty stomach and leave your higher expectations at home. Staff was friendly but their inability to answer questions right away shows they higher for summer jobs. I walked up to this root beer stand with nostalgic feelings and memories of the root beer stand I grew up with. This quickly vanished. Service was very slow with a side of attitude. They got our groups order wrong on two occasions and were not so happy to fix it. I do not recommend getting any type of chicken here. The hot dogs are alright. This place is charming and cute but lacks quality in food. They don't use actual whipped cream, I asked after I ordered a sundae and tasted it. The waitress told me "yeah, it comes in a bag." The brownie in the brownie sundae is a cheap nasty brownie from little Debbie, like the snack cakes you'd get when you were a kid. Peanut butter milk shake is ok, but still taste 'off' like maybe not the best quality of ingredients. Pork tenderloin sandwich is good, but they don't make it, it's all pre-made food that they just heat and serve. While I understand a drive-in has to do mostly pre-made items they should at least serve quality ice cream and real dairy products. And buy or maybe even make a better brownie! read more

I drove in just before the place opened and ordered one of their burgers dubbed the "Quarter Pounder w/cheese" and a small fry. The not so friendly server asked me if mustard, ketchup, pickle, and onion was ok on it and I sad yes. The lukewarm dry burger (as if precooked the night before then reheated in a microwave) was served on the typical drive-in car window tray - completely encased in its own ozone destroying polystyrene box! Apparently, this is their choice of packaging material for all their sandwiches and entrees. Alongside, were two chilled and sticky plastic bottles of ketchup and mustard. What a treat! I just love to put the ketchup and mustard on my burger myself! That way I get to touch something (before touching my own burger) not knowing where the hands of the last person who touched it were....and ice cold, to help cool down that lukewarm burger patty. The fries were unseasoned and cardboard like as of also reheated in a microwave. I'd give it one star if it weren't for the view of the lake. read more

I LOVE their food and location. I've been going to the root beer stand every summer since I was little and I love it. I have 2 complaints: the workers DON'T wear gloves. They are making food for people with their bare hands and I found it very gross and displeasing. Second, every employee has an attitude EVERY time I come here. When I order they always seem miserable like they hate their job, it's written all over their faces. It puts me off when people act that way. Whether a bruger and fries, ice cream, or whatever sutis you, it going to be good. The location in Culver, right across the street from the beach on Lake Maxincuckee, adds to the value of a visit.
