We are members of the center, but we honestly attended this event due to one particular employee. We were particularly impressed with Bennett during one recent visit. His knowledge and dedication to the welfare of the birds was very apparent. He spent extra time educating us about the program and specific birds. After speaking with him we felt impelled to attend the fundraiser and help out further. The event seemed a tad slow and disorganized upon entry, but soon enough things got rolling more smoothly. Some raptors were brought out, and again while presenting Bennett demonstrated his care for the animals in making sure their comfort and welfare was being placed before any promised viewings for the night. A hat tip to Bennett for his dedication in particular, and to the center overall for the program and care for animals.

Came here on a sunny Sunday to learn some history and it was a great experience. The docent in the…read moremain building was really friendly and gave us some history about the property and The Dalles. We walked around the house and enjoyed the architecture and the collections. Then we went across the yard and saw a bunch of old wagons and cars from the time period - the horse-drawn hearses were quite interesting, as was the electric car from 1902! Outside the building, my kids enjoyed petting the resident cat Midnight, who was mostly friendly. We then proceeded up the hill to see the Anderson homestead, which was also really cool to see. We probably spent just over an hour here and it was worth it.

The Columbia Gorge museum sits riverside of the Columbia River and through the century explores the…read moreformation and living life around it. There is much history here ranging from the American Indians, settlers, European explorers, immigrants, the lifestyle and hardships endured and more here at the museum. There are many stories you can read about and information on periods during the Gorge's history. The Skamania County historical society collect, preserve and display all sorts of tools, trinkets and more from the time period all related to the Gorge and all involved. There are many generous donors as noted on many of the displays which is cool. In the yard, there are old vehicles and construction equipment of the early days showing how supplies and timber were moved. They are worn and rusted but adds to its historical significance. The museum is about 3 floors, the 2nd floor is small, but packed with information about the nature around the gorge. There are theaters that show short features of the environment about the gorge. Depending on how deep your fascination for this goes, you could spend about 2 hours here a bit more if you read and examine all the displays. This museum is a perfect field trip for a school or parents looking to educate their youngsters about the history of the area. Even then, if you enjoy Pacific Northwest history, definitely add this to your list of museums to visit.

The Museum is very small, but the old fire equipment they have on display is breathtaking. It was awesome to see how our Fireman in the old days fought fire, with the equipment in this Museum. From the original old fire pole, to the beautiful old fire engines, you will enjoy this quick historical adventure.

When I visited, it had a fascinating temporary exhibit on laundry. You wouldn't think pioneer-and-beyond laundry to be an interesting subject, but the exhibit led you through a progression of machines, and a history of the people who had laundry services for the town, that made the early days of Hood River really come to life. The permanent exhibits were also well done. This is not just a small-town, slap a few pictures and descriptions on pasteboard kind of museum. Check it out!
