Shabu Amalfi - Strawberry and sushi? Why not?!

OMG OMG OMG literally the best sushi of my life...in Italy!…read more First saw this place upon entering Amalfi after walking through the pedestrian tunnel from Atrani. I thought Japanese fusion was definitely odd for the area, but we figured why not and gave it a try. Best decision ever. It's pretty reasonable in prices, especially for the fresh quality of the food. The place is very cute and low-lit - perfect for a date night. Starters: miso soup Entrees: 4 rolls of uramaki sushi (dragon roll, tuna with amalfi lemon zest, shrimp tempura/kiwi, and another with tuna/philly cream cheese/potato chip) Desserts: oreo cheesecake in a jar WOW. I was absolutely blown out of the water by this sushi. All of the fish was incredibly fresh and the toppings were so unique. Plus, the rolls were executed flawlessly. We both agreed, however, that the philly cream cheese/potato chip one was the best. The potato chip was HOMEMADE - like each roll had an individually golden fried chip on top. The combination of salty, crunchy and creamy was to-die-for. The miso soup was really good, as were those addicting cheesecakes in jars. After we left, we were so mad we didn't order 1 or 2 more rolls of sushi, they were that good. I will forever reminisce about this sushi and hold all other sushi to this standard.

It's off the Main Street and was away from the crowds and noise of all the tourists. The staff were super nice and greeted us right away. We ordered 4 different rolls and all of them were fantastic. We're from Los Angeles so our standards are somewhat high on good sushi. This place gave us a nice break from the crowds and spaghetti while providing some really impressive sushi rolls. Definitely would recommend.

The service was impeccable as well and they gave us our check as soon as we requested it- which as some of you know more often than not isn't the case in restaurants As for the sushi though, there was honestly a lot left to be desired. I understand I'm not going to have the best sushi of my life while in Italy but even with lowered expectations, I still walked out feeling like I ate some mediocre sushi

We got a great seat outside immediately and the service was super fast and efficient. The view is beautiful outside and the interior of the restaurant is nice too. You are seated close to others but it's okay! I have an avocado allergy and they accommodated easily. We got the chefs selection sushi and the rolls were all more amazing than the last!! The drinks were great too. The bao bun was amazing, rice balls bomb. The sushi roll with lemon was unlike anything I'd ever had but was amazing! This place was so good that we cancelled our reservation for a nice restaurant the next day and just came back here instead lol! We have had some of the best sushi in our area and in other well known sushi places and this was right up there with quality, if not better. Highly recommend.

Okay, so the SECOND best sushi I've ever had (behind Shabu in Amalfi). For taking a culinary tour…read moreof Italy, we sure couldn't pass up on Japanese (especially when our AirBnB host highly recommended this place). This place could be picked up and dropped into NYC or London or LA. Just a super classy, chic, low-lit sushi bar with attractive waitstaff. Definitely pricier than most of our meals in Italy (actually, I think it was THE priciest, come to think of it), but well worth it. We skipped apps and desserts and went straight for urakami rolls. I unfortunately don't remember all the rolls we got (it was 6 total I think), but a few stand out: one with lemon crumble (delish), one that was a smoked BBQ jawn (yes, you read that right), and one with KOBE BEEF on top and served with Sriracha (oh yeah). That last one was bougie as hell but justified the pricetag. All tasted wonderful and that Kobe beef one melted in our mouths. I think that smoky one was my favorite, though. Lemon was wonderful, but still couldn't hold a candle to that one in Amalfi. Service was fantastic. There was an issue with our bill but they very quickly resolved it.

I spent a weekend in Salerno and ate here twice, it was so good. I recommend doing the "all you can…read moreeat" for 20 euro off the conveyer belt. The conveyer belt has an array of sushi, sashimi, and nigiri that all tastes fresh and delicious. It also features fried rice, dumplings, shrimp/chicken skewers and even french fries. Add a bottle of white wine for 5 euro, and you really get a bang for your buck. I've raved about the food enough, however, their service is a different story. My friend and I, being two American girls in their 20s, speak almost no Italian. Their English was almost non-existent which made things confusing at times. The first night we ate here was on a Thursday, so we were sat right away and were the only two people in the whole restaurant. After such a good experience, we came back on Saturday night around 9 pm. Our Air BnB host suggested we try this place the first day we got to Salerno and he made it a point to say, you don't need to make reservations, so we didn't. Saturday night they had almost half the restaurant blocked off for reservations. Even if we wanted to make a reservation ahead of time, their website does not work and forget about calling over the phone unless you speak Italian. The women who works there is friendly and speaks some English, which is the only reason we ate there both times. The other servers were rude to us and tried to turn us away, speaking almost no English. Overall, great food and a great deal. Service, not so much. If you can suck it up for some good sushi, this is the place to go.
