I love this shop. I've been twice now. I'd go more often but I don't live in Asheville. I recently was on the hunt for a limited edition Nahvalur and emailed the shop. Jonathan responded quickly and said he knew a guy and could likely make this happen. Well, I just got my own today and it's beautiful!! Responsive to emails. VERY helpful in store. Origami Ink is a cute little pen store in a cute little building. They have an impressive selection of various fountain pens, a solid selection of inks, and a variety of odds and ends from pen holders to paper. There's a few art pieces here as well and display boxes. The salesman here was very personable. He was very chatty with everyone who came in interested in hearing everything and anything that had to be said. He was eager to help and was very engaging. It was obvious he was very familiar with the product. He helped my friend refill his fountain pen, was willing to look for a particular ink, and just was super helpful. Great selection, great service, great staff. They are not the lowest price, but if you're a beginner or intermediate user/collector, this store is for you, Don't be a snob and tout your Montblanc, Namiki Emperor and expect to get better treatment. The entire vibe is much more laid back and Asheville than Pen Hospital. Enjoy a good conversation, very helpful staff and owner that will help you find a pen that fits, ink that is beautiful and paper that won't bleed through. On a lark passing through town on a cross-country trip, I decided to stop and pick up a fine pen. At the time, I had NO IDEA that the experience of such a well appointed and customer-service oriented shop was such a rare and precious experience. In fact, from the other side of the country, I've yet to find another shop that begins to approach the experience. That day, Jonathan created a devoted fountain pen writer as he entertained my pickiness (which he said indicated a fountain pen user :-) walking me through every display in the shop. A year later, I am crushed that the shop was destroyed in the Helene floods, among so much devastation. Keeping you in my thoughts and heart as you rebuild. read more

Unfortunately there is no fine pen or stationary story (that I know of) in Winston-Salem, so I was ecstatic to find this place in Asheville and stop here every visit now. They have a good and focused selection of pens (fountain, roller ball, ball point), papers (Rhodia, Clairefontaine), and inks (Iroshizuku, J. Herbin, Noodlers). More importantly, they have excellent customer service. Unfortunately I didn't catch the name of the gentleman who works there, but he is so helpful but in a relaxed, low-pressure way. I picked up a Lamy 2000 and he helped my wife pick out two nice roller balls including a Retro 51 (they have a number of options there). I mentioned this when I was visiting, but in case you are reading this: try to get the Leuchtturm1917 line of journals -- especially the bullet journal style which are all the rage right now. read more

I've been frequenting Origami Ink for a while now and I wish I had excuses to visit even more often. The proprietors offer amazing customer service and seemingly endless knowledge. The store is in a beautiful location and offers a wide range of products for those who like to journal, stationers, artists, writers, or people who just like to write letters or send cards. Great pen shop!! Always looking for a pen store when traveling. They are few and far between. This shop has a great atmosphere. The selection is wide ranging from bargain pens to very high end. Owner was very helpful and knowledgeable. Lots of items other than pens. Family with me is not a fountain pen user but still enjoyed visiting the store. My husband and I visited this lovely shop Thanksgiving weekend. My husband enjoys fine fountain pens and purchased a Pilot Vanishing Point. There are beautiful writing instruments, notebooks, pads, including gorgeous hand made journals. We enjoyed talking to Jonathan, the owner, who is charming and not at all sales-y. When we got home we had some difficulty with the converter. Jonathan was very responsive and quickly sent us another one at no charge. It turned out the mistake was on our side, and he graciously declined our offer to pay for the additional converter + shipping. Great service in a beautiful setting! read more

From the title, I expected this to be a store that sells origami paper; however, it's a pen lovers paradise with exceptional service. They do have a nice selection of quality hand made paper note cards, writing papers of all kinds and other giftables. The owners really are passionate about fine, high quality writing instruments( fountain or other type of ink pens ) and this shop is a rare jewel in a sea of Asheville shops. You can look elsewhere if you want a cheap plastic ink pen; these are very high end pens for everyone from artists to calligraphers. If you appreciate the feel of a great quality pen, weighted perfectly for your own or another's writing needs, you will love shopping here.
