And you can all stop rolling your eyes at me because, unless you've been, you have no idea how stunning this IGA is. Imagine an over-priced, Fitzroy-based, organic food store where the fruit is all perfectly shaped & shiny and you worry that you're not wearing enough Lululemon to be allowed entry. THIS IS THAT PLACE. Except it's an IGA. In Blairgowrie. Fresh fruit and veggie, international hot sauces, and ready-made salads to go - all can be found at the Blairgowrie IGA. Plus an impressive booze section to boot. If you are lucky enough to live in this area or are just visiting for the long weekend, expect slightly over-priced but absolutely outstanding produce. Also, invite me to your wedding when it's held here, please.

The customer service was great, although I noticed the man behind the ice cream counter was a bit annoyed with people, I think maybe because no one knew what flavor ice cream they wanted, or maybe because I wanted to sample all the flavors. Either way I could see him whispering things under his breath which was off putting. But I still got the ice cream because how could you pass up the honeycomb ice cream?!?! The chocolates were available in all different varieties and forms. I was a little overwhelmed and felt like Charlie and the chocolate factory! I did end up spending 100 AUD for gifts to bring home... hopefully they travel well back to the states!!

My favorite was the organic raw peanut caramel chocolate dessert square. But I also loved the duck salad and the asparagus and broad beans with feta on toast. They happily substituted whole-grain bread for the white. (What is with this country? Why do all these nice cafés serve white bread? Who wants the less delicious/nutritious stripped down version??!!! I don't care if it is sourdough, it's still empty calories). Our only complaint is the steak on the steak sammy was pretty raw. I love that they have a "Spring" menu! Not just summer & winter like so many places. They sell a bunch of local artisan products, and have a real commitment to sustainability. I love all the stories on the wall about their green practices. Nice garden out back with produce that it seems they actually use on the menu. Pigs and chooks too. Indoor and outdoor seating.

My work mates were astounded to hear that I had not tried Sam's and insisted I go there to try the sharwarma and the crinkle cut chips with vinegar. So when the clock struck lunchtime I made my way there. Testament to the locals love of this place there is a line out the door made up of tradies and office workers. The place is adorned with "Go Cats" and Geelong grand final posters, along with an Australian flag and a tin to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal. Sam's is a family business. Wishing to spare the lives of innocent lambs I do not try the sharwarma but choose the felafel instead and the crinkle cut chips of course. Whilst waiting to place my order I am struck by the neat and efficient way in which the worker assembling the wraps is working. All the staff work like a premiership winning team. My order comes to $11. I then have some table anxiety as I am unsure whether I will get one by the time my meal is ready. Joy, someone stood up just in time and I happily snagged the table. A few minutes later I am greedily eating my felafel and crinkle cut chips with the all important vinegar and I am very, very happy. Sam's does not take cards but there is an ATM in the store if you forget to bring cash. The menu is extensive from burgers, sandwiches, toasties, omelettes, steaks, shakes and even sundaes. A sandwich of the Vegemite variety will set you back $3. You can even get baked beans on toast. As I am finishing a regular pulls up a chair next to me and strikes up a convo. The ever friendly staff ask if I enjoyed my meal. My reply, "I sure did".

We ordered a steak sandwich with the lot, which was the difficult-to-acheive trifecta of good, cheap and fast. The steak itself was tender, and the overall sandwich was hot, full of flavour and really hit the spot. We decided to dig further and tried a lamb kebab, which arrived at our table promptly. The hero here is the delicately spiced and melt-in-your-mouth meat, though the fresh and crisp tabouli and salad cannot be ignored. We were also treated to some of the freshest crinkle-cut chips I've had the pleasure of eating. I'm not usually a huge chip fan, but these were so perfectly cooked and salted, they just had to be devoured. There's a warm and friendly ambience here - I saw a couple of regulars greeted by name which is always great to see. The owners are genuine and up for a chat. If I could sum this place up in one word it would be honest. This is without a doubt the best takeaway food joint I've visited since my childhood, worthy of more hype.
