I'm from Los Angeles and somewhat of a wine geek and this review will undoubtedly reflect that. I was planning a family vacation to Eugene and found this entry on yelp for vine2wine tours. I called the phone number listed and talked to Kevin. He asked what I was interested in and suggested a tour he does in the Umqua Valley in southern oregon that is focused on small wineries that create wines that reflect the local soils and climate. He said we would visit 4 wineries, be served lunch and all tasting fees would be included in the price. We booked a weekend trip when we would be in Eugene. He picked us up where we were staying and while driving to the wineries (50 mile drive) he talked about the wine region we were going to, and the different microclimates that allow production of cool climate wines such Pinot Noir and warm climate wines such as Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah and even Zinfandel. It became clear on the way down that Kevin had a passion for wine and knew a lot about it. He has worked in wineries in all facets of their operation from picking the grapes, assisting the winemaker in making the wine, running the tasting room and giving wine tours. He was able to answer just about any question we asked. He said that the wines we would be tasting are not available in California but each winery has a wine club you can sign up for and have wines delivered to you - about 6 a year. The first winery we went to was Reustle Prayer Rock. We arrived at 10:30AM. We met with the assistant winemaker who gave us a tour of the winery and introduced us to our host who would be serving us wines to taste in a cave where the wines are aged in barrels. We were served about 6 wines with a separate appetizer selected to pair with each wine. The wines were very well made. The reds were deeply colored and in a style that ages well. We were all kind of blown away by the quality of the wines and their presentation with the focus on wine and food. Kevin was with us at all times during the tour of the winery. He asked us questions about our impressions of the wines and offered his as well. This is a very classy winery in a beautiful setting, similar to Archery Summit who charges $40 for an equivalent tasting and tour to what we experienced here. The next winery we visited was Delfino. As we left the parking lot to enter the tasting room, we were greeted by a sign welcoming our tour. The owners - husband and wife - were in the tasting room pouring the wines and recognized Kevin as we entered. Delfino is a small winery that is one of the few in southern Oregon that uses wild yeasts (present in the vineyard) to ferment their wines. The red wines are not as deeply colored or tannic as the wines from Reustle but I felt had more pronounced aromas. For contrast, we tried two tempranillo wines, one made from wild yeasts and the other from cultured yeasts. The aromas and flavor were definitely different. As Kevin pointed out, use of wild yeast is common in the Burgundy and Rhone regions of France and is part of what they call "terroir". It's use adds complexity to the wines aroma and flavor. We spent a lot of time at Reustle and Delfino and were now hungry so after driving to Abacela, we ate lunch on their patio with a great view of the vineyards. Kevin got the food (cheese and meats, sandwiches and salads) at a deli before he picked us up in Eugene. Abacela is a larger operation than that at Reustle and Delfino and offers many more wines. The style (ageability, color, aroma intensity,etc) of their red wines is midway between that of Reustle and Delfino. The winery's tasting room manager served us and Kevin was with us as we tasted the wines. The tasting room manager had worked in the winery and assisted making the wines and was very well informed. Before the tasting, he took us outside to view the vineyards. He talked about the different micro-climates of these vineyards which are situated on 2 large intersecting hills. He said the temperature can vary by up to 6 degrees from the base of these hills to the peak and due to this and the different exposures to the sun, different varieties of grapes are planted in different areas of the hills that are best suited to their micro-climate. It was after 4pm when we were done with our tasting of Abacela wines and since the next winery closed at 5pm, we decided to end the tour and head back to Eugene. There were 6 in our group on the tour and we were charged $125 person. At each winery we had a private tasting and were given much more attention than others there. For what we experienced and learned, the tour was well worth the price. Every autumn I come up to Oregon to visit family in Eugene and go to an Oregon football game. As a result of Kevin's tour, this year I will work on the harvest of the grapes at Delfino. It will be the first harvest for me. I'm looking forward to it. read more
