Crayford Arms - The Crayford Arms November 2012 after refurbishment both inside and out

Crayford Arms is a small traditional style pub in Crayford High Street, just opposite The Dukes…read moreHead. It is quite a small place and when busy it can feel very cramped. There is a little garden out the back which is nice to hang out in during the day but even here there are only a few tables. The pub has a pool table and juke box to keep you amused as well as a selection of local history books and pictures in one corner and photos from party nights which regulars have thrown at halloween/christmas etc which suggests a good rapport with regular patrons if I wished to become one. The Crayford Arms is alright for locals to meet up and have a pint and a chat but it is not the kind of place that I would plan of having a night out in. There is a very small car park if you wish to use it, or of it is full (which is highly likely) then parking on the street is available. Avoid the temptation to park in The Duke's Head car park as the owners do not like non-patrons using their car park.

Last week the real ales included Betty Stogs, Merlin, Barnsley Bitter and Spooks Ale which was so popular during the Halloween parties that customers requested that it was reordered. CAMRA has honoured the pub a number of times with it's awards, most recently with 3rd place in the Bexley Area CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2011. The Arm's also has a good selection of whisky and flavoured vodka to sample. Recently refurbished this pub, opened in 1840, has the feel of a late Victorian Alehouse with a real fire, wood floors and dark walls. The Crayford Arms is a pub that encourages community spirit. Its welcome is warm and friendly and it doesn't limit itself to simply selling drinks, although of course it does excel in the quality and range of real ales. The Crayford Arms is a community focused pub with local groups and societies meeting regularly in the newly refurbished building on Crayford High Street. Local singers, bands and entertainers perform in an intimate setting and there are often weekend events which involve families, groups and individuals. There is a car park at the rear of the pub and an enclosed and partly undercover garden. No food at the moment but this is coming next year. Thoroughly recommended but with one warning, you will be engaged in conversation with the regulars, so be prepared for a great pub that is part of the local community - a rare thing these days. The pub is on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/thecrayfordarms it's website is: www.thecrayfordarms.com and it is also on Twitter and Foursquare.

There are a regular band called Gambler who have two different line ups which play on Monday and Thursday nights. This band, to put it bluntly, are amazing and are a must see if you are in the area. They are a group of journeymen who have been playing for many years and can work wonders with musical instruments. They have become part of the furniture at The B&RS. Other music is offered on Friday and Saturday nights although after Gambler's performances most feel a little inferior. That said, they provide a little background music for folk as they unwind from a week of work. All upcoming music events are listed on the pub's website. Good quality food is available and the kitchen is normally open till around 8pm. If dining with a friend, meal deals apply to certain dishes which helps reduce the cost of a visit. Other attractions include the beer garden and the use of a car park in which is it normally easy to find a space. My experiences with the locals have not been great with some of them being rude, aggressive and downright irritating at times. It's difficult to get comfortable here and you always feel like you have to watch your back which restricts your enjoyment of the night. Although this is probably a small minority of patrons, these experiences have tarnished my view of the pub overall.

We were refurbished a little under a year ago and now have a totally new fresh look. We still have live bands every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night and yes, Gambler still play here but just on Thursdays now. Monday is Quiz night and Wednesday is our self hosted Karaoke night. In addition we have 2 pool teams and one of the largest Poker leagues in the SW. The refurbishment gave the opportunity to re-zone the pub and as a result have a dining end and a pub end, although, during the day people are welcome to (and do) eat any where. The pub end hosts the pool table and fruit machines and includes a free ATM. We have parking for about 30 cars and during the works the beer garden became enclosed creating a safe courtyard environment for children. This area can seat over 100 people and now bosts a covered BBQ area. We also gained a brand new, state of the art kitchen in which to prepare our new and extensive menu. We have food offers most days of the week, including a 2 meals for £8.95 offer running all day from Monday to Saturday inclusive. We offer a great Sunday Lunch with (should you need it) unlimited veg, roasties and gravy. Since arriving we have also added to our drinks selection, we have a huge selection of wines, spirits and bottled beers and ciders. We have a great "shots" offer and stock a large range of draught products including IPA, Old Golden Hen and Abbot cask ales. We even have a new pump to pour your IPA to your liking, either crisp and sharp (southern) or creamy and smooth (northern) its your choice. The atmostphere is now great and you no longer have to "watch your back" as was once written in a review here. Please do come allong and give us a try, you will be impressed.
