CMC Guitars is one of the best kept secrets as far as guitar/amp stores go. I have been buying from…read moreSteve(owner) for years. He is always top notch in service and knowledge of the gear. As far as the gear goes... all top notch stuff... we're talking custom shop Charvels, Jackson, Fender Custom Shop, McNaught, PRS, etc. Just walking into the showroom and your mouth will drop to the floor and GAS(Gear Acquisition Syndrome) will ensue. On top of that, he always seems to have the latest gear shown at the NAMM shows just a bit earlier than other retailers so that's always a plus. If you're looking for a store that's heads up about the Sam Ash's and Guitar Centers, then go to CMC Guitars. You won't be disappointed.

I visited with a friend recently who was having work done on his violin, and the wonderful…read morerepairman (Tom Hawk) could have been an Elf in a Lord of the Rings movie. Imminently knowledgeable and keen, we just knew the work he was doing was the right thing. I was told he's certified by the Martin guitar folks. My friend had a Charango from Peru just to show Tom, and he immediately identified 3 or 4 things he could improve on the instrument. This store bills itself as South Jersey's Oldest Music Shoppe, since 1938. They are very active in the community with local high school bands and the like, and the very friendly cashier was the daughter of the original owner. The selection of musical instruments, music, and all sorts of related paraphernalia was mind-boggling. It seemed very-well kept up and clean to me. You may not find that rare Martin 1935 guitar here, but that's not what this store is about. Lessons, rental, special events and more can be found on their website - pleasantvillemusic.com - check it out!

As a first-time guitar builder, I was recommended Musikraft LLC for custom-made parts, and they did…read morenot disappoint. The process is straightforward--go to their website, select the parts you need (custom necks, bodies, hardware), and start configuring. They offer all possible shapes, and even if they don't have what you're looking for, they are more than willing to customize to your specifications. I worked with Scott from sales, and inquired if they could make an Ibanez AZ2204 neck for a Telecaster body. They said no problem, but for simplicity's sake (this being my first build), I opted for a standard Tele neck. Once you pick the shape, you can really get into the details--everything from headstock shape, scale length, nut width, to fingerboard wood. For necks alone, you have 31 choices, many with multiple options. The sky's the limit when it comes to customization. After placing my order, I received a confirmation email, and the parts were sent into production. Lead times were quoted at 4-6 weeks for necks and 1-2 weeks for bodies, and while I waited slightly longer, the end product was worth it. The neck was flawless--smooth edges, perfectly attached jumbo frets, and dimensions that were spot on. Assembly was a breeze, and the final guitar came out amazing with easy setup and perfect intonation. Highly recommend Musikraft for any custom guitar project!
