Meadowhall

Meadowhall is a large shopping centre, located just 3 miles away from Sheffield city centre, or 2…read moremiles away from Rotherham town centre. It is the largest shopping centre in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and the 12th largest in the UK overall by retail space, at time of writing (October 2021) - if the planned improvement works happen the centre could be expanded to become the fourth largest in the country. The mall is easily accessed by all modes of public transportation: There is a public transport interchange for trains (as far as Manchester and Cleethorpes), there are also Sheffield Supertram and bus services, serving the centre, not forgetting the 12,000 parking spaces up for grabs. There are multiple places to eat inside the centre's Oasis Dining Quarter including branches such as Friday's, KFC, McDonald's, Nando's, Pizza Express, Subway, Tapas Revolution and Wagamama. If you're looking for coffee, there are multiple branches of Starbucks, a Caffe Nero and some of the department stores here have their own Cafes. The majority of the centre feels modern, there are many large shops including Apple, Marks and Spencer, Primark and Next and even a barber and a VUE Cinema. The loss of Debenhams has hit the centre hard, which was one of the largest anchor stores of the mall. My biggest problem with this is you now have to walk all the way around the car park to get into the centre from the South Tinsley tram stop because the store is closed, that just seemed dangerous and not very well sign-posted for me. I feel they should have kept a walkway open to allow safe and confusion-free access into the centre. 4*

Although this place has all the usual chains and could be anywhere it is quite a relaxing place…read more The best part of it to me are the tiny specialist shops, in the little streets, off the food court. The Lanes. The food court itself is not bad for a shopping meal..lots of noodles or pizza and an all day breakfast place amongst them. The little shops have ethnic goods, an old fashioned toy shop and film memorabiliaThe Last Picture Show. There is also jewellery (Cleopatras is nice), a hobby shop, a watch hospital and a fairy shop. Arkwrights Emporium has all the old nostalgic stuff people love..great for gifts..including Gollies. Beatles stuff Marilyn Monroe, Laurel and Hardy. Audrey Hepburn, model cars and tractors, signs with a message, and branded stuff like BETTY BOOP. GUINNESS. JACK DANIELS. JOHN DEERE etc. These little shops are, for me, the best part of Meadowhall.

Frenchgate Shopping Centre

Frenchgate Shopping Centre is a modern-day "Fawlty Tower's" and is one of the worst indoor shopping…read morecentres, I've seen serving a large town or city. The mall had a kind of sad atmosphere, many units were left empty or abandoned, with many of the store's that remain being small/poor stores, such as a Sainsbury's where I couldn't find anything which I needed. The security staff seemed unhelpful and lazy, they didn't care or stop children running around and playing ball games, shouting and screaming around the centre, it felt like a place for unruly troublesome thugs than a place to shop. The mobile signal in and around the centre is also non-existent, despite Doncaster having 5G, and my iPhone 12 Pro Max supporting this, I was barely able to access 3G! I also think it was frustrating that the majority of stores within the mall close at around 17:30, which is pretty early, even Sainsbury's shuts at 7 pm. There was some construction around the mall, which seemed unsafe and many lifts were not in working order. They did have a small number of eateries, but a lack of big brands in that regard, with Nando's and a pizza joint (such as Pizza Express) missing. 1* - A big letdown for the people of Doncaster, if you need a shopping centre in Doncaster, head to the train station outside the mall and head to Meadowhall, which is a twenty-minute journey.

There's loads of parking (although it is a little on the pricey side), good access to the railway and bus station and loads of the usual High Street names. It can be a bit confusing to navigate around - I still get a bit confused as to which way I'm heading when I'm in there, and take careful note of where you've parked as if you go back up the wrong stairs you may never see your car again! There's not much of a foodcourt but right at the end of one of the sections there are several eateries - you need to be looking for it though, you won't just find it as you're passing as you'd expect in most shopping centres. Watch out for the loos - last time I tried to use them they wanted to charge for the priveledge! Not a chance!

Moor Shopping Centre

Moor Shopping Centre

The Moor Shopping Centre in Sheffield isn't a traditional shopping mall, I'd say it is more of a…read morequarter with the only "inside" parts of the mall including a dining quarter, which includes terrible branches of both Nando's and Gourmet Burger Kitchen (there's also a Zizzi), and The Moor Market. A short walk away from Fargate, Orchard Square and the Cathedral, many shops located here tend to double up over there, which I'd say is the nicer and possibly more "central" part of Sheffield, which is served by more services on the Stagecoach Supertram. Ryman, Sainsbury's, JD, Halifax, EE, Boots, Specsavers and Ann Summer's are just a few of the brands located here, and there is a large Debenhams department store too. Currently, there is construction around the area, making public transportation and bus services in the direct area, a little difficult, forcing you to go a short walk away. Lack of signposting from the dining area to the shops is a big flaw, originally I began to think they weren't interlinked or even near each other, the whole set-up is rather strange in certain areas. Some decent brands here, albeit some of the stores are probably the smaller locations of a certain brand in the city, The Moor does have a selection of places to eat (but those branches I tried are the weaker stores in the chain). 2* based on a central location, having a large Sainsbury's and Debenhams and a cinema.

The Moor is currently being renovated so at the moment, it looks worse than ever with buildings being knocked down all over. The message from the council seems to be that things will get worse before they get better but hopefully, the work will clear out many of the cheap shops and encourage the nicer stores back.
