The hyperbaric oxygen therapy and red light therapy made such a difference they reduced my inflammation and sped up my healing process more than I could have imagined. But what really makes this place so special is Carol herself. Her presence alone is healing!!! She has such a gift for making you feel safe, cared for, and supported. She's not just running a business, she's a true healer, and that energy is what sets this place apart. I'm so grateful I found her during this time, and I highly recommend anyone who's in need of real care and support to come here!!! She genuinely cares and wants to help heal you! The office is small and nice and very cozy and you feel like you're at home!

If you have a condition that comes with paralysis or mobility disability and need the help of staff…read moregetting into the oxygen chamber, this place is *not* for you. Or if you believe in accessibility for disabled folks in general, and that principle should be a priority in a facility whose sole purpose is "healing", this place is * not* for you. My father has advanced Multiple Sclerosis and needs to be transferred in and out of his wheelchair. He is 6'2", and to get into another chair or bed, it takes another person, or sometimes two or three people. We understand that takes time and effort. (As his family and caregivers, we do it multiple times a day, every day.) But at other appointments such as the dentist or any of the many other doctors and professionals he must see, it's not a problem; staff are trained, happy to help, and expect it is part of their job in a health setting. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Institute advertises its services specifically for "quadriplegia" (this is literally the first condition listed on their "conditions treated" page) and mentions that folks with MS, Parkinson's, stroke, and other similar disorders can be helped. This gave my parents a lot of hope. They made an appointment and were willing to invest significant precious resources into receiving the advertised treatments. At the appointment, they accomplished the transfer and it was fine, but they were treated like a bother (by one staff member in particular). After that, my parents received a phone call telling them not to come back. The staff said my father was a liability and their insurance wouldn't cover the needed support to help him transfer and access their services. My mom cried for hours and my dad was sad for days. Not only were they humiliated, but they felt hopeless after being treated that way specifically at a place meant to help people like him. Fortunately, most other medical (and other) facilities we must frequent are accommodating, and have the staff and insurance in place to actually help the people who need it. I am glad that this place is helping some people. But my recommendation to them would be to increase their liability insurance coverage in order to be accessible to all, and be able to help those to whom they specifically advertise. In the meantime, those who need extra support in accessing HBOT services should stay away.

Two major surgeries for my daughter at 16 and then again at 17 years old. From the moment we met Dr. Zapf at the consultation, then through two surgeries and then recovery, his care, professionalism, and expertise were outstanding. Dr. Zapf not only took the time to explain every step of the procedures in a way that was clear and reassuring, helping to ease her and my anxiety. His humor and connection with young athletes was like nothing I have seen in other surgeons. The surgery itself was a complete success, and her recovery went even better than expected. My daughter felt supported every step of the way and even has decided to study Kinesiology in college due to her experience with Dr. Zapf. It's clear that Dr. Zapf is not only incredibly skilled but also genuinely cares about their patients' well-being.

I will admit that I have never been one to keep up with my personal maintenance and I haven't been…read moreto a physician on a regular basis since I was in the Marine Corps which was 25 years ago. My new employer charges an extra $50.00 a month for my insurance if I don't get a yearly physical, but their spin is I get a $50.00 discount every month for seeing a physician once a year. Within the last year, Dr. Chang has moved to a new location ( https://bit.ly/31vpBEP ) which is near the corner of La Paz and Moulton Parkway in Laguna Hills. The space is nice for a doctor office and it is reasonably close to my home. The reception desk ( https://bit.ly/2J7YCbU ) is just inside the entrance and waiting area has a decent amount of seating. Once you name is called, the first step is getting your vitals ( https://bit.ly/2qw3CRv ) taken before you are walked to examination room. First time I had an appointment with Dr. Chang was three years ago and most of his criticism had to do with me looking like a human version of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I managed to put on a few more pounds before I became disgusted with myself and lost over 80 pounds in about 6 months. I went for a physical exam because I was having some digestive distress and I guess I was due for a visit because it had been several years between examinations. Dr. Chang did listen and conducted a thorough physical which included the thrilling prostate exam. The first time he did this exam I was like "Oh, my God!" He replied, "I am just putting on the glove." On my most recent visit during the exam I moaned another doctor's name. Don't do that! "Who is Dr. Jones?" "You're the only one!" Some time in the future I will upgrade to the endoscopic examination which is more commonly known as a colonoscopy. For those not familiar with the procedure, you are put into a twilight sleep while a long, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the tip is inserted into your rectum. The camera is guided through your entire colon which basically makes you star of your own Discovery Channel special (I hope they get my good side). If Jacque Cousteau was still alive, I would definitely want him doing the narration: "Slowly, we are going up Rohlin's colon. Up ahead a steak he had in 1988." On my latest visit, I received a fist bump for the weight loss, but Dr. Chang did mention some sun damage on my head and reminded me my shiny head isn't a solar collector. We briefly discussed my diet (which is atrocious), but since I don't smoke, rarely have caffeine or alcohol and not really a fan of narcotics, I am allowing myself a vice. The lungs sound really good and my vitals are excellent for someone in my age group. Rohlinism: If you don't enjoy your vices, you should find some new ones! The only thing I messed up during this latest visit was forgetting to fast which meant I couldn't get my blood drawn ( https://bit.ly/32Id9CQ ) until the following Friday. The technician who took my blood did it right the first time and the whole procedure was over in less than five minutes. I don't have large veins, so it can be annoying at times because technicians from time to time miss my vein. I like Dr. Chang and his staff which is a good thing since I will be seeing them at least once a year for the foreseeable future!
