The physician I saw was okay, but his billing service is not. A call to the billing service was not answered so I called his office directly. I spoke to a woman named Angie in the billing department who told me that she no longer has access to billing information. I can't even get an itemized bill. I have insurance which doesn't appear to have been billed. This is so pathetic. Why do so-called professionals have such unprofessional, incompetent people on their staffs? Do they not understand how bad it makes them look? I will ask my eye doctor to refer me to another retina specialist. They certainly can't be any worse than this office. read more

I injured my cornea on the Saturday before Memorial Day, 2024. I went to the urgent care and the doctor couldn't see anything too grievously concerning, but made me promise to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.  I called several clinics on Sunday and Monday but couldn't get ahold of anyone until Tuesday. I spoke with Brittany at the OC Retina Center, and she said that I was in a kind of bind, as I'd not been given a referral from my primary care provider, yet couldn't come in and pay out of pocket because the clinic did take my insurance. I drove around trying to speak with someone in my provider network when Brittany called me back and said she'd get me in with some pending approval status. She had done everything she could to get me to see a doctor in a clinic fairly close to my home. And she gave me an appointment with an excellent specialist, Dr. Esther Kim. I was able to see Dr. Esther Kim on that Tuesday and she identified that I'd lost pressure in my cornea and would need sutures to stem the damage. She scheduled me for surgery for the next day, completed the surgery herself, and it all went very well. She also noted that I'd had some retina fluid build-up following the blow and that I'd also need an injection to clear that up. I told her that we'd had a family trip to Kauai planned and she gave me the injection in time for me to travel with my family.  During my trip, I was frightened by some symptoms and was again able to speak with Brittany, who knew my case and was willing to receive images of the symptoms. She assured me that, while frightening, the symptoms were fairly normal. She then spoke with the doctor and was remarkably matter-of-fact and reassuring in that moment of crisis. They called in some drops that would help with my eye sensitivity and I was able to enjoy the trip. The sutures have been removed and the other concerning symptoms seem to be resolving. I'm feeling quite grateful to Dr. Kim, to Brittany, and to the other staffers. I may have some issues that need tending in the future, which is concerning, but I have confidence in the OC Retina Center and trust that they'll do their best to attend to any forthcoming issues. read more

I can't say enough great things about Dr. Kim, she has been my eye Dr surgeon since 2019 unfortunately my eyes have had genetic issues since then and she has fixed my retina detachments a couple of times since and has operated on both eyes for vitrectomy she has been there for my next day followups, preventive care and general medical advice, I've always felt safe and comfortable in her care. Do not trust this people they will take you from one room to another room without informing. What are they doing and at the end they will send you big bill. When you call to the office or visiting the actual office the staff super rude and non of them informative at all. Approachability absolutely not exist in this office. Do not visit this office and Give yourself some respect before you go to all those headache. read more

My last appt (May '21) I waited well over an hr to be seen, and then wasn't even seen by Dr. Chen. No one bothered to say, "Oh, hey, the doctor is running behind. It will be X mins before he can see you." So during check-in at my appointment today, I asked how long the wait would be. "About an hr and 20 mins", I was told. (Would they have offered that info if I had not asked? I doubt it.) They said that's just how long it takes if you want to see Dr. Chen and "that's how he does things". So why didn't they just schedule me an hr later if they know he consistently is behind? Why not schedule patients according to what can be reasonably anticipated? Very discourteous of patients time and inefficient scheduling. Asked to be rescheduled first appt of the day with his assistant. We'll see how that goes. read more

I waited in this office for over three hours to see a retinal specialist due to vision loss caused by pregnancy complications. The office was clearly behind schedule and when I was finally brought into an office to be seen I waited so long in there that it got so hot and stuffy that I felt claustrophobic and began vomiting into the office trash receptacle. They examined my eye less than the ophthalmologist the day prior and didn't give me any information at all as far as what I should or shouldn't be doing to care for my eye, whether or not this was permanent, and asked me to come back in a month and sent me on my way without any sort of care without giving me any sort of instruction at all on what I should or could be doing to make this better or even prevent it from getting worse. I was clearly frightened and pregnancy and scared for the health of my baby and my overall health. The doctor I saw mentioned having an 11 month old child and I would have thought would have more compassion for a patient in my state but I was sadly mistaken. read more

Office staff is unprofessional and curt. I've been coming for several years, and haven't had one of them make good eye contact, or have a friendly greeting. They are always annoyed at the end of my appointment when I ask for dilation sunglasses. On my most recent visit, the lady at the front desk today told me that I don't have insurance and they wouldn't be able to see me today. I told her that I have insurance and nothing in my insurance has changed. I asked her if it would help if I called my insurance and have them talk to her, which she said yes. I got my insurance on the phone and was ready to hand my phone over and then she mockingly explained, "Oh, I can't talk to them, our office is calling them. I can't talk to them". Why didn't she tell me that before I called them, or update me on the process/progress? Then, when they did confirm I had insurance, rather than coming over and telling me this, she had the gal sitting next to her do it...with no apology. She just said, "we had a bug on our end, and you do have insurance." I waited 45 minutes in the office for them to tell me I have insurance before I could even be called back to start my appointment. However, in contrast to the office, the doctor is very good. read more

The front desk staff is so rude I will not return. Frankly I've had more gracious service from the DMV. The greeting was cursory. I was given an intake form to fill out (I was a returning patient). When I completed it, I returned it to the front desk and the woman gruffly stated "there's more than one page!" The Dr. was fine and the medical staff was ok. But I am still appalled at the complete lack of customer service. The impression I get is that they have so many patients, they couldn't care less if you return or not. Given that we still have choices with regard to health care providers, I am choosing to find another one. Read the rest of the reviews before you move forward. read more

Dr Kim is great! She is highly trained, skilled, and professional. She truly cares about her patients. I have referred several patients to her in the 7 months since she did my surgery. All are very pleased and satisfied to be her patient. I HIGHLY recommend Dr Esther Kim. read more

I would give this business no stars if I could. The office staff are seriously rude and don't care at all about patients. I was told a test would be covered by my insurance only to get a bill later for over $500. Although this test maybe took an hour to do and in my opinion was a complete waste of time and unnecessary. They were totally unwilling to work with me. Later when I asked if I could speak with the dr. regarding an issue I was having I was told that the Drs. aren't available for phone consultations even in an emergency! Do not go to this practice! They also keep you waiting for hours beyond your appointment time and leave you in the office waiting for one trainee after another to come in and look in on you while you're waiting! I was referred to this practice by my primary care physician. I am very surprised at the previous reviews since my experience was nothing like the other patients. Quite the contrary, I found the office well managed and various professionals performing their roles very well. There were many other patients present and they were processed to different areas with efficiency. Dr. You appears to be on the cutting edge of retinal research. He recommenced a drug to help dry some leakage in the retina which has impacted my vision. I am hopeful that it is effective since I immediately bore into the topic and the results are promising. Dr. You is not only a top expert in his field, he's great with patients. I was also happy with all the staff members I interacted with. The parking is a little bit of a hassle and can be confusing in your first visit with the many medical buildings clustered together, but paying a few bucks for parking is nothing when you consider you're entrusting your precious eyes with some of the best specialists in the region. read more

First time to this office today from a referral from my eye Dr. The dr. I requested to see was not in. They should have called me to ask if I wanted to reschedule with the dr. I requested but instead I saw Dr. Chang. He was running behind. When he came into the examining room, he was apologetic but after that, he was very rude and degrading. The Orange County Retina offices in Laguna Hills & San Juan Capistrano deserve NO STAR. Customer service is deplorable. Expect to sit & wait for a very long time beyond your scheduled appointment. Slow Service. Reception staff are not friendly. Doctors are consistently behind to see patients. Not sure if the they double book patients to get more money. You spend more time in the waiting room than you do once you finally meet the doctor. Bring lots and lots and lots of patience & tolerance with you to your appointment. Don't expect to be in & out of this office in less than 2 hours - despite having an appointment. If possible, avoid this business at either locations. Very unorganized office staff. Go elsewhere if you can for your eye treatment, otherwise you will spend many hours in a day just to be seen & treated by the doctor. Unbelievably Poor Service. I was hopeful the wait time to see the doctor would improve over time, but after a year plus and several appointments later, no changes at all. Sad!! read more
