I go to Optimum Gym for the trainers. I have seen Lois and Marco who are the owners of the training company called DrivenFit that operates out of Optimum Gym. The gym has first class equipment, some I know and some I have never seen but definitely no shortage of machinery, or weights here to get you in shape. The gym also has 24 hour access and I am told you can get a trainer at anytime as well but I prefer 6:00 AM. The gym feels clean, has lockers and restroom facilities. Most authentic and serious gym in Tampa that I've visited. Small but has everything you need. Locally owned and operated, I pass 3 big box gyms on my 15 minute drive here and I do so happily. Best leg and back equipment anywhere I've been as they do have a strong bikini training program. Love the back warehouse area which is not climate controlled. read more

I did some personal training sessions here, so this review is mainly about that. I will say the gym is chock full of great machines. In terms of equipment, it's 5 stars. It's no frills gym and everyone there is minding their own business and serious about working out. My personal training sessions reflects that ethos slightly. By this I mean the training sessions were GOOD and thorough and worked my ass off, but my trainer seemed slightly bored, or maybe I'd even say... discouraging. Like made some slight remarks that were ehhhh. Not that I need someone blowing smoke up my butt, but it's a big change for a lot of people to try to get out to the gym, and I didn't really feel like my trainer was "on my side." By the time the upsell came to buy more sessions, I was ready to find a trainer elsewhere. Getting a good workout is great, but someone who can boost you a little is even better. Other than that, the gym has a very clean vibe (good), but not really any locker room situation (bad) as far as I can tell. It's also off of Kennedy, and turning in and out of the already small parking lot can be a bit of a nightmare (also bad). I'd say if you're just looking for a gym in South Tampa, definitely check this place out, but if you're looking for a personal trainer, you might want to shop around. read more

This gym looks small from the outside, but it's not so small inside. Lots of Top equipment, a bikini room, a large front room and a boxing room towards the back with more equipment. The fees to go this cool 24 hour access gym are relatively low and they offer a free 1 day pass to check it out for yourselves :) Located on Kennedy, I went here when I lived in Brandon and I still go now that I live 5 minutes away. read more

I'm loathe to promote Optimum because it will get more busy, but it deserves it. Ruben, the owner, is the chillest dude ever--amazing track record as a personal trainer. Reuben had me pay for my first two months of membership upfront totaling over 200$ and when I tried to cancel he continued to charge me for my final month even tho I paid for it in full when I initially signed up on top of another signup fee. I sent them an email asking them nicely not to charge me as I was evicted from my residency downtown when the building was sold and forced to move to Polk County, instead of being understanding they decided to charge me anyway despite me having no access to the gym. I have used the facility for 57 days and they have charged me 317$ total for a two-month membership which is just appalling. The gym is all about personal trainers trying to make money with their clients if you're trying to lift go somewhere else. The gym is always crowded. There are two benches by the free weights and one garbage hammer strength flat bench. The gym is so crappy they don't even have 20kg bars. The gym is primarily geared to females so if you're a guy don't join. A short synopsis is terrible management, a terrible gym and you're better off going to Forge in Tampa, Gold's or even paying more to go to the powerhouse gym. What a disgrace to scam me like that I hope Reuben is proud of himself and enjoys spending my money to play with his go-karts. I'm far from the first negative review, but most of those are about how he's a creep with the women which we won't get into here :). Reuebn is not a trust worthy individual avoid him like the plague. read more

My favorite gym in south Tampa! Coolest owner, Ruben, who is super down to earth, easy to talk to and helped me set goals AND reach them in a short amount of time. Gym is open 247 so you can come and go as you please Any time of day, weekend, Holiday. Etc. Ashley who works the front desk is SO friendly and gives a warm Welcome the second you walk in which sets the tone. The sauna is my favorite part after my workout hands down awesome gym all around! I can probably go on forever about how much I love Optimum gym. By far one of the best gyms I've ever been too. Amazing staff, great trainers, great facility, great equipment for body building. Perfect for anyone looking to compete in a fitness competition, and also great for the casual gym goers. For the 4 months I lived in Tampa I truly felt like a member of the Optimum family. When I got there I wanted to compete but had less than 6 weeks to get stage ready. This is a really awesome local gym. There's tons of great and different pieces of equipment. It's hardly gets that crowded even at "peak times" and you don't have to wait for equipment. Everything you can think of for fitness is here. They do boxing classes too if your interested in that, and lots of variety for punching bags in the back. read more

Optimum is my 5 star elite choice of South Tampa Gyms. They have successfully managed to combine top of the line workout equipment with some necessary old school "real workout" equipment that you just can't find in gyms today, to give your body a complete, muscle tiring workout. The trainers took a lot of time to get to know me and what my individual goals were so we could develop a realistic plan I can actually attain while balancing a full time career. Other gyms in the area that are considered "high end" always stuck me with an hourly waged college kid who could care less about me, in an overly crowded gym that never had convenient time slots available for the regular working class. Optimums attention to me, my needs and most importantly my availability sold me on this gym and I haven't even mentioned the boxing yet! This gym has the best array of unique boxing equipment, classes and one on one boxing training of any other boxing studio I have been to. What an amazing stress relief sport that also gives you a total body workout if you are trained to do it properly. You don't just walk in and beat on a bag, run around a circle, and do some sit-ups. You actually learn to box here! If you haven't tried Optimum gym yet, you are seriously missing out on a great fitness experience. I highly recommend it! read more
