Dr. Chelsea Balderson is the best dentist I've ever had! I have received fantastic dental care for almost ten years with Optimum Dental and my teeth look and feel terrific. I've had cavities filled, my teeth grinding at night has been eliminated using a sleep guard, and I completed an Invisalign program that helped my teeth become perfectly straight without braces. Cleanings are very thorough and my teeth are always feeling great afterwards. Dr. Balderson and her team are extremely passionate about proper dental care and are pros. I cannot thank this wonderful team enough for all of their constant support and professionalism. As a single caregiver to a senior citizen with memory loss, I have trouble keeping up with all of my mom's details, appointments, medications, insurances, etc. We've been coming to Optimum Dental since 2023. Kim at the front desk always makes sure to confirm with me that meds and appointments are on schedule and she's endlessly positive when I forget something (which I do and she steers me back!). Genet always sits with me after appointments if I need a debrief on how the care is going, and how we can work with insurance to reach health goals for my mom. She helped me find insurance for her when I was lost on how to start this journey for a senior citizen. She walks through billing AND potential procedures step by step to make sure I'm aware of what directions we can take and the pros/cons of each way. We've worked with both Dental Hygienists Beth and Angela, and I know we've worked with Dental Assistants Andrea, Crystal, and Diana. This is when I don't get to see this part of the service but let me tell you EVERY time they take her back my mom has come out and told me how gentle they were, and you can tell she simply had a good time with them. My 80-year-old mom's MAIN anxiety is dental work! They keep her calm and I'm sure resolved when I'm sure she gets nervous! For every one of you that does the one-on-one work with my mom I don't get to see, THANK YOU. It shows when I drive her home and ask her the gauntlet of questions on how it went, how she felt, is she in any pain? She's just always positive about how she was taken care of and she has such a fear of dental work. Dr. Balderson is an exceptional Dentist. You can tell how intentional she is with how she tailors medical care to the patient and has such a high standard for precaution first. She explains the purposes behind procedures so clearly and is so delicate with her work my mom has never complained, even on the more difficult procedures. She has such a talent for translating complex dentistry and she helps me make the best decision for her care. I always recommend Optimum Dental to my close friends and family who live in the DC/MD/VA area. To this day many of which are still patients of Dr. Balderson, primarily because this office takes the time to GET IT RIGHT. They are very thorough and explain all treatment options based on my needs. I don't like being rushed at any doctor/dentist appointment so it's refreshing to have their full attention each visit. I wouldn't suggest going here. On my first visit the X-rays took forever and were painful, an experience I've never had before. Then another first, it took them so long to do the X-rays and cleanings that the dentist wasn't available to actually see me so I had to make an appointment to come back...like 3 weeks later. They said I needed fillings, another first. Then they messed up the filling which caused me pain and for my filling to chip necessitating more filling work. I contacted them asking to have the corrective procedure done sooner as I'm concerned their shoddy work may be leading to a bigger issue. They told me that they have no sooner availability so that I have to wait another 3 weeks for them to fix a problem they created. All in all, pretty terrible from scheduling all the way up to the dentist. read more

Apparently Optimum was purchased by Dr. Kaur a few years ago and things have gotten a lot better. I was not a customer of the previous owner who was apparently not popular. I can say that Dr. Kaur is very friendly and talks you through everything that she's going to do. She will also give you options and work with you on price. I don't have dental insurance which gave me some pause since procedures can get pricey, but she was very reasonable and made agreeable accommodations. Her staff is competent although I think they work a little too fast during cleaning. I've gotten a more thorough cleaning elsewhere. May have something to do with my using their back to school special which was the least expensive x-ray and cleaning I could find in NOVA. I also got a night guard. The mold was done by a technician and she didn't seem like she had done many, so it needed to be adjusted when I came in for my fitting. Not a dealbreaker, but I think they should have done better quality control in the first place. read more

Honestly, the worst dental experience I've had. Dishonest and utterly incompetent. I went to this Dr. Balderson over a year ago now and should have written a review sooner. I did a lot of research on what dentist to use after moving and the reviews steered me to Optimum. The front office staff are lovely but that's it. It had been a little more than 6 months since my last checkup when I went and they told me I needed 5 crowns!!!! My previous dentist had mentioned I'd likely need 1 on an overfilled tooth....but 5!!! I couldn't believe it. They said it was essential I got 2 of them done right away. However, then they asked if I was also interested in Invisalign and said if I was, then we should wait to do the crowns (the urgency suddenly went away!). I should have listened to my gut and left but instead opted to have them do just 1 crown initially. During the procedure, the doctor was in and out the whole time. She had an assistant do the majority of the work which made me uncomfortable but I went with it. In the end, I had to go back to get the temporary crown replaced because it hadn't been adjusted correctly and then had a to go back again to get the temporary adjusted because again, it hadn't been finished correctly. Once the permanent crown was finally in, I had to go back 3 times for them to make adjustments to it before I just gave up and found another dentist to help me. The new dentist said the crown was way off and badly fitted and had to do some further adjustments. I had him give me another exam and mentioned the 5 crowns Optimum said I needed. He had no idea what they were talking about. I had one small filling in my wisdom tooth that needed to be taken care of (which Optimum did not catch) but that was it. Fast forward to a year and a half later, I was eating dinner and the crown came right out! I have just been to another dentist to have it put back in and he said it was so badly fitted that I'll likely need a whole new one soon. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! read more

This a great practice for our whole family. Dr B is wonderful to work with and is great at her job. I feel like she and her team are very conscientious and thorough, yet also warm and caring in everything they do. The cleanings are thorough with little pain. My kid has also had a filling done and seems to have barely noticed what happened (and importantly, still has positive associations with the dentist!). The office is clean and well-run. I came here per my new dental plan. I don't mind going to the dentist so this was a typical visit. I thought the dentist and the hygienist were friendly and explained everything to me in easy terms to understand. The front desk staff male staff member was extremely helpful in explaining what I owed, how much I will owe for my next procedure (need to get my tooth bonded), and anything else I had questions about. I did get one those "goodie" dental bags upon leaving and the coupon that are printed on the bag were expired from awhile ago. :( The building that the office is located sort of off to the side which caused me to have to turn around when I passed it since off an access road. Every single person in this office is W.O.N.D.E.R.F.U.L! I switched dentists because my insurance changed. This was the first place that I found and have stuck with it ever since. I truly feel like they care about my teeth and are very thorough in their explanations and treatment plans. If something is wrong, they will fix it. If you tell them that something hurts, they'll look into it further and track it. If you have a specific scheduling issue, they'll figure out how to make it work. They are SO accommodating to your needs and wants (and they are always smiling, even early in the morning!). Luckily, I've never had a fear of dentists or had a "bad" dentist, but I can definitely say that Dr. Balderson and her team are by far the BEST. I'll be moving farther away from them soon but still plan to drive back to Falls Church for all my dental needs! read more

New patient & first appointment with this team - *Fabulous* (can you say that about dentists)? The team is attentive, professional, accommodating and very compassionate. The office team made sure they contacted my insurance to get all the info ready for me. For the 2.5 hours (first appointment) with 3 staff members hovering over and doing all the testing they need, and I felt in great hands the entire time (they even got a cleaning in - which I usually dread!). As a patient for five years, I continue to be impressed by Dr. Balderson's professionalism and competence. She works with an expert staff, using the newest equipment. Her practice is a positive asset to our community. I've just completed wearing my Invisalign aligner trays, which took a little over a year. I was a patient at this practice for many years, and have seen it change hands several times. Chelsea Balderson and her front office staff are the reasons I am finally moved to make a review, as I am compelled to switch to another dentist given the abysmal service I have received. I have had a partial dental implant for years at this point, and no one told me going in that the implant would be so expensive. It has been thousands of dollars, the majority of which has not been covered by insurance. In fact, every appointment I've had with them has had extra fees added, NONE of which I approved before being surprised with them on the bill. Responses to my inquiries have been consistently condescending, "aw, do you need a payment plan?" type of replies. Also, the implant is not in. I have paid dearly for the privilege of wasting hours of my life in their office, for them to actually achieve nothing. read more

Unfortunately, I left traumatized. Okay, not traumatized, but it was certainly unpleasant. I decided to give this place a try based on the Yelp reviews and from a reference from a friend. I did not like my former dental office because of the constant up-sell and came here. I must say, I really should have gotten up to leave after the hygienist: 1. Made me gag three times and nearly vomit (and believe me, it's not one of those light, uncomfortable/irritating coughs you get) 2. Half-arsed my teeth cleaning. She did not pay attention to my teeth and quickly ran the polisher over my some of my teeth and barely made contact on the enamel. She did not floss my teeth properly and didn't reach back towards the back of my teeth either. To be honest, I could have done a much better job flossing and brushing my teeth at home with my Sonic brush. 3. During my teeth cleaning, the water she sprayed splashed on my face, got into my hair and I had a stream of water go down my neck. I felt like i needed to go home to take a shower (no exaggeration)! When the dentist came to see me afterwards, she literally blew my hearing in my ear for a good 15 seconds while she came to finish up my teeth. I should also add that I also came for a invisalign consultation that took only less than 10 minutes, but I felt that Dr. Kaur was in such a hurry... The only positive that I have for this place is that the front desk folks are very friendly, but this place just makes me scared to go back. The hunt for a new dentist still on. read more

LoL, I had recently gotten a Groupon for teeth whitening. I went in yesterday for x-rays and cleaning because I could not bring in my own x-rays from my regular dentist. I was asked whether there is anything else that I would like to inquire about, and I didn't think much of it but recently my jaw has been painful and sometimes cannot even close it properly. I never thought that I was a teeth grinder at night. Dr. Pleva checked my my jaw joints and told me that I was possibly grinding my teeth at night. I told her that I often hear a popping sound in my left ear, which is also where the pain is. She suggested getting a night guard. After getting x-rays Dr. Kaur had come over and examined my x-rays and explained to me that one of my fillings was cracked. We had it filled in. My x-rays were done, my cleaning was perfect, and the crack filled. I also ordered a night guard from them as well. Now it may all sound like they were trying to up-sell everything that they had and all but if you think about it, teeth in short are expensive anyways. Sure you can say "all you need to do is brush twice a day and mouth rinse and your good!" But now a days that isn't good ENOUGH! Most people get braces, regular check-ups and cleanings, cavity fillings, root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, etc. Everything that I got were pretty basic. X-rays are needed in any dentist office. If I didn't get my filling filled that I would most certainly get really bad breath, not to much build up of rotten food holed on in the crack. And I researched the night guard business, and found that if you don't stop the process soon in its early stages, it gets very bad as you get older. And its apparently irreversible. Sooo, I was not just up-selled to, and treated like a chump. The doctors here are very professional and they have a certain attitude that seems much more warm then the usual cold professional dentists. They were very nice and patient with my questions, and explained things in a clear manner. Not just the doctors, but the whole staff are a very friendly bunch. The night guard is usually $666, which I would NEVER pay for EVER! Even if I HAD the money, just for a piece of plastic, $600 is not worth for molded plastic. They added an office discount and it came down to $350. They cut off like half the price of the regular cost, if not maybe even 60% off. Dr. Kaur gave me another 25% discount on my cavity filling BECAUSE it was so small going from $155 to $116. X-rays and cleaning was $89, and that was something that I agreed to before my visit after explaining that I couldn't get my x-rays in for my visit. But all in all, besides the financial issues, my visit was most pleasant. Friendly people. Will most certainly consider switching over, making Dr. Kaur my primary dentist. It's worth driving 40 minutes. I highly recommend this place! read more

I've been going to Optimum Dental for years, and the service couldn't be better. After coming from an archaic dentist, who had me once running from the examination room, I found Dr. Vo's bedside manner refreshingly wonderful. She has the lightest touch when performing a cleaning or filling a cavity and sometimes you get to put these DVD glasses and watch your favorite episode of Friends to pass the time. There is a variety of DVD movies, but choose the TV series because you can actually finish an episode in one cleaning. This makes for a magical and painless visit. Every six months, I see a new dental assistant which can be good, since I had one horrible assistant who couldn't floss or polish my teeth very well and had to re-do my x-rays which had me tearing up at the end. However, my last visit, I had a wonderful dental assistant, Miriam, who flossed and polished my teeth with a gentle touch. I hope she's still there when I go back. Going to dentist always seems like a dreadful experience, but going to Dr. Vo's is definitely not. Just like a stereotypical Asian that doesn't want to disappoint her parents, I don't want to disappoint Dr. Vo either! I can't seem to tell a lie when speaking about my dental habits when sitting in that chair! Hopefully, I can wow her with my flossing next go around. read more

Optimum Dental is a godsend - was looking for a dentist that actually took my insurance, and the one I saw over a year ago made me avoid the dentist until I went to see Dr. Balderson. She and her staff really know their stuff, are very thorough, and very friendly and communicative! So glad I found this place. Their attention to detail meets or exceeds any dentist I have ever been to. I also find that the dental assistants seem to be more competent and knowledgeable than I've experienced at other dentists. I've been going to Optimum Dental since early 2008 and started initially with Dr. Brittany Vo. Due to a number of botched procedures, I stopped going entirely and was looking for another dentist when I found out that Optimum Dental had been taken over by new dentists. Upon coming back to Optimum Dental, both Dr. Kaur and Dr. Punaji did initial work on my mouth. Both dentists were very quick, procedures were pain-free, etc.. I started seeing Dr. DeVito right after - wow, such a great dentist! Let me preface this by saying how much I loathe the dentist - I do any/everything to avoid going and hate the noises/drilling/etc.. Dr. DeVito did a root canal on me and it was the easiest procedure I've had to-date. She was knowledgeable, considerate & very good at what she does. Optimum Dental and their entire staff make you feel very comfortable, they work with you, your schedule and are flexible re: payment plans that work best for you. Highly recommend this practice.
