Treatment plans for monitoring diabetes don't require a need to see the doctor at every visit. On the visits where the doctor is not seen Melanie has been the PA that monitors the control of the diabetic issues. She is always knowledgeable about lab results, medication monitoring, and exams for diabetic neuropathy in the feet. The waiting room, exam rooms and scheduling area has always been immaculately clean. You never have that feeling that you're going to pick up another patients germs. The added convenience is I can have my blood tests performed at my local doctors office the week prior to my appointment. Of course you can also choose to have your blood labs performed right at this office. They also will check out the accuracy of your personal blood sugar test kit. This office is woohoo, as good as it gets if you need to see an endocrinologist.

This review I'm going to open my heart up a bit... how can I not give someone five stars when they…read moreliterally saved my life. Doctor Fakunle is the only Diabetic Specialist (Endocrinologist) that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting that treated the "whole" patient. She sees me not as a "diabetic" but a person that happens to have Diabetes. In a world where doctors have little time to spend with their patients, Dr. Fakunle will take a moment to talk to you and see where you are at, what challenges you are currently facing, and ask how she can help you overcome them. It's not enough just to get the prescriptions and medicines you need... as a Diabetic you need a dedicated treatment path who will help you follow through every step of the way. In her clinic she has Dieticians, Diabetic Educators, and a full Laboratory capable of running all diabetic Labwork eliminating a lot of wait time. She also was the first doctor that listened to me and did not write me off as an overweight diabetic type II diabetic who needed only pills and nothing more. My life was in shambles, I had no energy and this was the third Endocrinologist I made an appointment with. I almost expected more of the same. However, she ran the labwork to find out I am a true late onset Type I (formerly Juvenile) diabetic. This meant that I needed Insulin and finding this out was like being hit by a Louisville Slugger up side my head. Unfortunately... no fortunately she helped me get started on insulin and eventually got me onto an insulin pump. Once I got on insulin my life came back... I got energy... I got the will to get up and go in the morning back. I would have probably died before the other doctors figured it out. All because she didn't look at me and see me as an overweight person who was non complying with their type II diet and treatment plan... but took the time to listen and run tests to verify that there was something really wrong. If you have diabetes, I recommend ANYONE in her practice. All of the doctors there, Mary Self, Dr. Bybee... Dr. Williams are excellent. Diabetes isn't the end of the world... it just makes living in it more interesting when you have everything in check.

(If you're wondering the same thing, it's a hormone specialist). Though i'm sure there are probably lots of reasons to see a hormone specialist, this review will mostly be for FTM guys and you curious yelpers who want to look through the window into the world of trans. I walked into the first appointment not knowing what to expect. I'd not done any real research and, if we are being honest, i wasn't totally mentally prepared to start T that day.. which is what i thought was going to happen. When i arrived, the staff were very welcoming and friendly. They used the "he" pronoun without me even asking them to. They also asked what my preferred name was, but at that point, i hadn't thought of a preferred name. They let me know that whenever i decided on something new, just let them know and they'd update it in my file. (flash forward 5 weeks when i did have a preferred name -- they updated it not only in their office records, but also in the Norton records -- so all Norton network folks would be informed) So, what to expect if you're seeing the Endo for the first time: 1) they will weight you and take your vitals before putting you in an exam room. The nurse that always does this is really chatty. She shamelessly flirts and really builds up your self-confidence. I naturally have a pretty large head (that's what she said), but i think lots of guys would really feel great after interacting with her. 2) Dr. Poorkay will come in and ask you family history and relationship questions. He's basically gauging if you have a support system in place. He'll refer to you in person and in his notes using your preferred pronouns. He'll tell you what's required to start T: a. a letter from a therapist (if you need one, I recommend the doc in my TransList bookmarks) b. blood tests -- a lot of them. (they will write the order and tell you there is a lab right down the hall. i recommend talking with your insurance and knowing what will be covered. I needed 9 tests - things like a lipid panel, T-Free and others i'd never heard of. if you don't have insurance or have a really high deductible, see my review of Any Lab Test Now) 3) You won't leave your first visit with a prescription. He made a follow-up appt for 5-weeks out. 4) When you return with your letter and lab tests, you still won't get a shot that day. He'll ask you a few more questions, give you the chance to ask all the questions you spent the last 5 weeks thinking of, then you'll leave with a script. I was disappointed with this, but i understand that they can't give out the serum in the office. 5) AFTER you fill the prescription (i recommend the "Good Rx" app to find the most affordable pharmacy), you'll have to return to get your 1st shot. They require that you either come in each week for the shot OR have someone administer it for you. If you choose the latter, you'll save time and money, but that person will need to come with you to be shown by the nurse how to do it. 6) Dr. Poorkay will schedule a 3-month check in, which will require lab tests again. This is to make sure the T is effective and nothing else wonky is going on with your hormones. After that, the visits will be less frequent, maybe once or twice a year. Lastly, since his office is a part of Norton Healthcare, you can log into your "my chart" to look over your appointments, lab results and to send messages to Dr. Poorly or his staff. They typically respond within 24-48 hours. 4 stars just because i wish information like this had been available to me before starting the process. The staff are great, Dr.Poorkay is great and i'm so grateful to have been able to pretty seamlessly start T. **I've created a TransList bookmarks list for other Trans Guys on a similar journey. Best of luck fellas. There are lots of great trans friendly businesses and health providers around louisville. how lucky are we? :)

Let me explain why is was such a low rating. My husband is a patient at U of L Physicians Endocrinologist & Diabetic Associates. His doctor, Dr Williams, had retired so all his visits were scheduled with PA Melanie. She is good but only works part-time so she is scheduled months out. She also is a PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT so even though she has lots of experience in this practice she does not have the same education and training of an Endocrinologist Doctor. We had an unusual situation that needed to be addressed right away and probably needed someone with considerable training. Thus we were scheduled to be seen by Dr Self. (I was having significant adverse reactions to my husband's new prescription of insulin! That is why WE needed to be seen. The PA's nurse had said in all seriousness that maybe we needed to live separately. That was NOT the answer as we have been happily married for forty seven years.) The visit with Dr Self started out BAD when she said "this is not above PA Melanie's pay grade!" What?! The next thing Dr Self said is "I've agreed to see you but let me tell you right now I'm not going to be your doctor!' What an attitude, we weren't looking to change to her we just wanted to address an urgent medical issue and thought experience might also be helpful. After explaining the situation to Dr Self she dismissed my issue and said it was impossible for me, not the patient to have allergic reactions to my husband's use of insulin. She did change his prescription upon our request but prescribed a medicine with the same active and inactive ingredients. Needless to say the visit was a bust and we would never choose to see Dr Self in the future. We found Dr Self to be arrogant and dismissive in regards to our appointment. So although we would give her a one star rating based on our experience we will generously give her a second star because she did see us. As the Yelp stars use to say Two stars equals "me thinks not!"

The original appointment was a 3 month wait and 2 weeks before I was to see the physician I received a telephone call informing me that he wouldn't be available that day and I needed to reschedule. Since the cancellation was from their end, I assumed that I wouldn't have to wait too much longer, but alas, they tacked on an additional 6 weeks of waiting! When I arrived to the office my initial impression was that it was quite easily the most unfriendly office I have ever visited. The check-in staff never looked up, just nodded and never smiled. After a lengthy wait past my appointment time I was called back to see the physician, but not until I was grilled by a very incompetent medical assistant who had trouble finding the right page of my chart on the computerized charting system. She insisted that several of my routine medications had been discontinued (I had just seen my primary care doc 3 days prior and am certain that they were not!). What she was reading was a discharge note from the hospital following a recent surgery when the meds were discontinued the morning of my release. I finally met Dr. Chennubhotla and he was worth all the trouble ! My first impression is that he is very thorough and knowledgable and is concerned that his patient understand all that is going on. As a nurse, I am quite picky about health care providers and thus far I am impressed by his unhurried manner and wish to construct a plan that is suitable to the both of us. The pleasantness of the time with him was quickly ruined by my attempt to check out!!! I waited longer to check out than my time spend with the physician!! There were only 2 checkout staff, who were also answering telephones, walking patients to the lab, and more!! I had laboratory orders and needed an appointment for a different day to have them drawn as I had not fasted prior to this visit and the labs require one to be fasting. The check out staff told me that their lab appointments were booked pretty solid for the next 3-4 weeks and the earliest available was an 11: 30 one day in the next week. I explained that was late for fasting labwork and she was indignant that was all that was available. I asked her to please see the physician ....who ultimately told her to give me and early morning appointment for fasting labs. I still have to wait 10 days, but the appointment is at 8 AM. The office is highly inefficient and the employees rude, but I hold hope that the physician proves to be worth it!!

Dr…read moreKamal is the newest Endocrinologist in the U of L Endocrinology and Diabetic Associates practice. My vote was out for maybe five minutes or less until we met her. She is young but don't hold that against her! Dr Palwasha Kamal specializes in Endocrinology and Diabetic Nutritional Care. She is an excellent communicator. While in the waiting room I listened as two older ladies left an appointment in this office. They were conversing about the doctors thoroughness and totally delightful personality. Yep, they must have just seen Dr Kamal because that is exactly our opinion of her also. She spent much more time than I'm accustomed to with providers in this office. She reviewed ALL the lab results from recent tests and previous tests to form an opinion on how well diabetes was being controlled. She made note that one portion of the blood work had not been completed and asked that we stop at the lab before leaving so she could see complete results. She noted that I had a complaint of allergic reaction to my husband's use of insulin and asked us about that. I had since seen an allergist and was able to explain to her my rare reaction (1 in 500,000) to the phenol m- cerosol preservative was causing me major adverse symptoms that ended once my husband changed to another injectable diabetes medicine. Dr Kamal also wanted to try my husband on a constant glucose monitor over his twice daily finger prick tests. When my husband said our insurance doesn't cover that she said they could perform it as a ten day trial on a loaner basis. So at her recommendation we took care of that with this visit and just needed to return the monitor after ten days. What a difference a doctor can make. Dr Kamal is FANTASTIC! She will be my husband's Endocrinologist in the future and recommends seeing him every other appointment with the alternate visit still handled by PA Melanie. We look forward to her future care and recommend her to patients needing to see an Endocrinologist. I still say she deserves ten stars!
