there aren't too many great things about living in hyde park. there are some nice green spaces and the 57th st. beach... pretty buildings... mostly, though, it's just open produce. this little space is special. it is bright and clean and the lovely, friendly employees fill the tiny shop that has everything with good music and chill. open produce, how do i love you? let me count the ways: 1. walking to the bus, grab an apple to tide me over til dinner 2. 1:30 in the morning, working on a paper and starving, staring at empty cupboards until you give me beautiful red red strawberries that smell and taste like beautiful red red strawberries (for $2!) 3. if i'm not singing along to the song you're playing, i'm thinking, "man, what is this amazing song you're playing?" 4. you promote hyde park artists, too? 5. without you, there would only be treasure island. it's too gruesome to imagine! 6. vegan-enabling 7. midnight chocolate-enabling 8. fresh herbs in a secret refrigerator?? what else is in there?? 9. free buttons 10. food from around the world and you don't even brag about it never ever go away, open produce. promise. read more

I would give Open Produce my business before their much larger competitor down the street, no doubt about it. They include tax in the price, so there are no surprises at the register. For the size of the place they have an amazingly well balanced variety of products, and the prices are in many cases less expensive than their competitors, even with the tax inclusion. They know their customers' preferences well (open 'til 2am? just what a hungry student needs!) and seem to have relatively sophisticated tastes; no Little Hug juice jugs or Flamin' Hot Cheetos from this neighborhood grocer. Great unique selection of items you not only won't find elsewhere in Hyde Park, but would also need to travel for a good 30mins to find anywhere else. I especially love the frozen farmers market goods and the great Indian cuisine ingredients. A whole bag of ground cumin for $2?! A 1oz jar would run me $5 at Treasure Island. Open Produce greatly reduces my need to visit The Spice House up north. Oh, and you can also buy beer (good beer, too!) later than any other place in Hyde Park - until 2am, I believe. read more

I had been meaning for ages to pop into Open Produce, and I was dazzled with what I saw. Great selection, especially of bread from the Medici, good produce, and handy pantry items at quite good prices, not just compared to Treasure Island but even to discount grocers like Aldi. Whoa, talk about a ghost from Yelps past! I just logged into Yelp after 3 years of lurking and found this draft from 2009. Not sure if everything is still accurate, but here ya go: I love the feel of this small, locally-owned business, where the employees are never too hurried to give you their opinion on the tastiest type of pear. Aside from standard and not-so-standard produce, Open Produce also carries grocery staples and a nice range of international foods. There is an impressive array of dairy alternatives if you're vegan or lactose intolerant, and there are even halal marshmallows if you're an observant muslim! If you have special dietary needs, check out this store--if they don't already carry what you need, you can always suggest that they stock it. There is a blackboard hung near the front door for this very purpose. (Talk about catering to your customers!) I also adore their $1 bargain table, which has dry goods for cheap (bags of caramels and 2-for-$1 nature valley granola bars are a few of my recent deals) and produce that's too ripe to sell for full price, but still plenty delicious (7 kiwis for a dollar?! Yes, please!). The student-friendly hours are ample (11am to 11pm every day); the paint scheme is bright and cheery; and the "it's delicious".... this is where my draft cut off. I'm not sure how I was going to complete that thought, but I recall an "it's delicious" painting of an avocado, and I was probably going to say good things about that painting. It's very close to the Point and the Lake Front Trail, so you can easily grab some picnicking supplies for your lazy Saturday staring at the lake... or refueling supplies for your ass-kicking Sunday bike ride/run on the LFT. This can't replace a full grocery store, but the prices are pretty good (also, thank you for putting the FULL price w/ tax!) and the selection is amazing (especially because: have you seen how tiny the store is?). If you're picking up some ingredients for an impromptu dinner and don't feel like being price-gauged by Treasure Island, Open Produce is your place. They carry a standard range of fresh fruits and veggies as well as local goods like ice cream and greens. Some of their products are really, really cheap: avocados can be found for 99cents, and they offer a full range of fresh herbs for less than a buck as well. There's bread from the Medici, dried goods of various ethnic persuasions lining the walls, and a rotating array of new and seasonal products. OP is charming and organic (in both senses of the word) and I do hope it becomes a Hyde Park institution, if it's not one already. read more

I LOVE this place. It is adorable and you feel like you are in a small town, or another country, it's just the best. Staff is friendly and it makes me feel like I live in a community. Good selection of whatever you need last minute - alcohol, produce, milk, late night popsicles. Hands down my favorite store in Hyde Park. Prices on things like Meats are a bit more expensive but they seem to be of high quality so that is understandable. Everything else seems incredibly reasonable. The prices on the international food items are excellent. Love that they are open til midnight since I am a bit of a night owl. The store is open late, which helps people who suddenly find out they need something. The selection is very good: much is fitted into a small space. There is produce, baked goods, and some good dairy products. The staff know how to do their sourcing. Somehow the atmosphere of the early to mid-seventies (e.g. Ann Arbor, Rogers Park, Boulder, Madison) is reborn here. read more

This place is pleasant. Village closed down, so did the Coop, and the neighborhood is being co-op-ed by unwanted grocery stores. Open Produce has a varying amount of foods that appear to be organic. They are definitely tasty and they have fresh produce. They have great hours and you should definitely support them. read more

The best little corner store you could hope for. Open late, good selection of stuff you need late (ice cream, packaged Indian food, and craft beer) in addition to a great fresh produce / staples selection for a store that size. My wife and I dropped by the store one cold gray Sunday a few weeks ago. I had heard about the store and wanted to try it. The selection was not good and the shelves were sparse. The guy there was very rude and not at all helpfull , and threatnened to call the police on my wife, who was just looking for some avocados on sale. We will do out shopping in future at stores where we are made to fell welcome, like Treaure Island and Hyde Park Produce. Suggest these guys stick with beint students read more

They are procuring more and more produce from local farms & producers, which is really fantastic. I like the energy of the staff and wide variety of goods to choose from. It is nice to have options. I have given this store so many chances and cringed every time I gave them my debit card because this grocery store is so ridiculously overpriced it makes Whole Foods look like a dollar store. Yet I kept coming back because of its proximity to my home. On multiple occasions I have found items covered in dust-- check the lids of the imported olives in the middle of the store. A few months ago I bought apple sauce that I didn't realize had a hole in it until I got home and when I went to return it, they wouldn't give me a refund. No I didn't have my receipt and yes it was a few weeks after I purchased it so I understand that.But today I started to make an omelette from a carton of eggs I recently purchased from this store. I opened it up only to realize an egg was missing. Mind up they charge $8 for for one carton of eggs. So I called the store to tell them about this issue and he said that I couldn't cook the remaining eggs in the carton and still receive a refund. I understand there's a health code but that doesn't seem like a reasonable solution for someone who just overpaid for eggs. That's it I'm done with this store. They must give priority to certain customers that keep them in business because the same couple that cut me line yesterday also walked out with a grocery basket read more

Open Produce is great at stocking exactly the things I want to eat. They are friendly and awesome conversationalists.

For a small store, Open Produce has a great selection of hard to find produce (weird fruits, sugar cane, etc..), and most items are pretty reasonably priced. The store just opened, so I think the selection of items will be better soon. Late hours are really nice. Hyde park produce is bigger, so their selection is better, but as far as East Hyde Park, Open Produce is definitely better for fruits and veggies than Treasure Island. read more

Every time I can't find something a little bit obscure at TI, Open Produce comes through for me. It is not a full-service grocery but they have lots of spices and ingredients for making various world cuisines, as well as specialty natural and organic products, at fair prices. I wish I lived around the corner, I would go there much more often. read more

This is a friendly, high-quality, and cheap grocery store. I strongly recommend their fruit selections - at the moment, they have a box of really delectable peaches - and their non-Western selections, which arer surprisingly extensive. Good honeys, too.
