I had an intake appointment with them at 8 am to see if this place was a good fit for my daughter. I was a little weary, because the website said they opened at 9, but she said 8 am was the best time for them to "squeeze" us in. Since I wanted my daughter to start therapy as soon as possible, I cleared my schedule and so did my husband (he had to be at work by 9), so that we could make it. We waited until 8:11 am, no one was there. I called them and no one answered. Needless to say, I am going to find another therapist who can keep appointments. read more

I wanna start off by saying I came across this therapy platform while searching for family and marriage therapist and came across open past my husband and I both paid the initial fee and began trying to look for therapists in our area long story short we submitted applications to 4 different therapists In our area & schedule appointments to be seen. 1 of the therapists it took her up to a week and half to get back to me & when she did she pretty much said she wouldn't be a great fit for us which is understandable & she proceeded to giving us other options outside of The platform which is acceptable and I appreciated the other 3 never got back to me never called me back pr reached back out I left voicemails & emails with no word back. I was very disappointed with the service that we didn't even get a chance to receive due to the lack of responses. I reached out to an open path team member cancelled my membership & was said to be getting my refund back. Which was nice . However I do wish I would've got in the service instead hopefully in the future they're more on it with their responses for their future clients. read more

These racists don't like serving black customers. If they hear a black voice on the phone, they'll lead you along, lie and say that they'll call you the next day to do your intake, but you'll be waiting forever, as they have absolutely zero intention of serving the needs of African Americans in search of mental health treatment, which leads me to believe they can't provide quality treatment to anybody, so I'm glad they showed their true colors so I didn't have to waste my insurance money on them. Also, after you leave a message trying to follow up asking why your scheduled intake didn't happen as planned, they'll ignore and instantly delete your message. This place is absolutely dreadful and ran by the scummiest people in the industry. It should be closed down for blatant discrimination. read more

I had to call and leave messages quite quite a few times until I reached someone. I came in here for couples and individual counseling. Maria was amazing. I learned quite a lot from her. Her guidance and light is so appreciated. I recommend her and Open Paths with massive thumbs up. read more

Omg. I had to complete some therapy requirements for some personal reasons, and man oh man am I so happy that I found this place. Previously I had gone to a different counseling center MUCH closer to my house, but I felt like the previous place wasn't .. "Personal and non-judgmental". Open Paths is soooooo welcoming. I had my personal one on one sessions with Dawn, and she has completely changed my life. My first session with her, I was a wreck. I was depressed, had low-self esteem, etc. every time I met with Dawn, from the first moment I met her, she made me feel like I was at home, but in an even more sacred place then home. She is so warm and kind-hearted. Throughout my sessions we spoke about a multitude of topics ranging from myself and my demons, to my family, relationships, work, etc. NEVER ever did she say anything negative about something I looked at as a negative. Her responsive were always from a non-judgmental point of view, and always very uplifting. Whenever I left a session, (at first it seemed as though talking about my issues made me feel worse after, BUT the next day when I woke up, I felt BETTER!), I always was happy. I've become a happier person. I've started wanting to live life and care for myself. I've become more involved in other things, and before this I used to sit on my couch and sulk and mope and cry. Dawn, I cannot say thank you enough. You truly are my personal miracle worker. You have changed me into ME again. I'm not in a hole anymore. I couldn't have done this without you. I also attended a few group sessions here. At first I was very timid and scared about opening up infront of others, but trust me, it's the best thing I could have ever done. You listen to others, you share with them your story, and you connect on a much deeper level then you'd believe. I didn't have a chance to meet with every single counselor there in depth, but in passing everyone had an aura about them that gave off a reassuring and calm vibe. When I walk through the doors, even if I'm crying on the way there for whatever reason, it's as if all my problems were left behind and I'm in my safe place. I love this center, and I will continue to return even though I'm not "required" to. Thank you so so so so much. You're all amazing people, and Dawn, you saved my life. Literally. read more

We recently had an initial interview for therapy for our son at Open Paths. When I called a few weeks ago, I was told that the counselors here are all interns who have completed their coursework and now need to finish hours before they can get their degree; I get that. And the intern who was "assigned" to our family seemed nice enough. But first of all, communication was lacking. We weren't told how to find the office or even how to get into the building, so we were several minutes late for our initial interview. Also, or initial interview was treated as a full session; we were charged the full amount ($120), and we were on a 50 minute timer-- just to meet our intern and fill our paperwork and see if she could meet our needs!!! Another thing that was not communicated very well over the phone prior to our interview, is that our intern would not be meeting our son to see if it was a good fit. When we talked over the phone, I stated over the phone that we would bring my son and that I could not find babysitting so we would bring all three kids with us; I thought this was a good idea so that my son could meet his counselor and tell us whether or not he liked her, and if my other kids liked the office in case they would like therapy, too. No one told us over the phone that the kids could not talk to the counselor, and that we could not leave our kids in the waiting room without adult supervision; so our 50 minute initial interview ended up being split between my husband and I meeting with our intern one at a time. I haven't even started to mention that the office is dank and dusty, and that the counseling room was cluttered with worn out furniture and book shelves full of uncared-for games and toys; I had an allergy attack within minutes of entering the office, and I found the counseling room to be very distracting, as an adult. So even though the intern is a nice person, whoever is running this place seems to have no care or concern for communication, or the office environment, and doesn't have an ethical issue with charging you money to find out. read more

While I appreciate the mission of Open Paths, my experience with counseling here was pretty demoralizing and I ended up terminating couples counseling with our therapist (Anna) earlier than planned. She's nice enough, I guess, but there was a persistent problem with her not remembering what I said from one session to the other. She would ask me a question, I would answer it, and then two weeks later, same question, same answer - repeatedly. When I brought this to her attention and told her how frustrated I had been with this, she seemed like she was listening, but then two weeks later, she asked me a question I had already answered multiple times. When I brought up the fact that this was exactly the problem with her I was talking about, it was obvious she had NO memory of that conversation. At that point, I was done and terminated therapy. (My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.) I could make some other criticisms as well, but being bad at listening and remembering when that is your literal job makes for some pretty bad therapy. I only hope the other therapists on offer are better at it than she was. read more

I was going to give one star but im giving the extra for our first counselor/therapist. My wife and I came for help and we started working with Sharon, I really liked her but then one day I received a call from Greg and he wanted me to attend a different class and I agreed and I picked him as my therapist and all was ok in the beginning. Greg sucks, very very unprofessional. He told my wife he knew a secret of hers while smoking outside, I told him this in confidence and pulled that crap. That's just one of many things he said and did but he doesn't care about people, he's on his way out and just wants his hours.I can't believe this guy is actually going to get licensed but if anything his instigating bull.... brought us closer together because we talked about it and caught on despite his advise to not speak with each other. I was a client here about 5 or 6 years ago....And at that time....I was seeking guidance/support for a lot of different things...My therapist was a lady named Sandra? I think that was her name?! It's been so long ago, I really don't remember....anyway, she was not a good therapist and I often felt like she was judging me & would tell me "no, you need to do this or that"....and I would always feel uneasy about it?! And like, it's not your job to tell a client what they should do or make them feel bad about the decisions they have already chosen to make! I also though their fees were a little much....$25 per session?? After a couple sessions, I stopped meeting with her & went to another Counseling Center where I have been a client until this day?! It's not perfect, but the way they do therapy is much better than here. I also didn't like when you came into their office, you had to knock on the door or ring the buzzer, to let the receptionist know you were there.....which wasn't very welcoming?!! It could have changed by now but I just didn't like their approach, office, and decided to leave!!!! I like where I am now and would never even think twice about coming back here! read more

My therapist Lisa is incredible! She is helping me work through some major relationship issues and is very astute and up-to-date on the latest psychological and neuroscientific theories. The worst counseling experience of my life. I thought the problem was a' bull in the China shop' supervisor, who had a "my way or the highway" attitude. But it turns out my trainee counselor needs to grow a heart and a spine. Talk therapy was abruptly terminated. I am now in touch with their Clinical Director but, frankly, the damage is done. The AMHCA (American Mental Health Counseling Association) code of ethics states: "The primary responsibility of mental health counselors is to respect client autonomy, dignity and promote client welfare... Mental health counselors do not abandon or neglect their clients in counseling." As Ryan Howes, PhD, ABPP writes about unethical conduct in Psychology Today, 6/30/14: "When you've been traumatized by an experience that is supposed to be healing, it's an enormous loss. And the field of psychotherapy takes this very seriously." Open Paths apparently does not subscribe to these professional and ethical standards. read more

This center has been an amazing find. I have been to expensive counseling practices in the past, some of which were helpful and some of which, not so much. Within this last year when I needed services yet was in a much different financial situation than other times in my life, this center was referred to me. I have to admit my expectations of lower cost center were not high, but I have received such great attention; far better than any previous experience. I really couldn't have asked for anything more and am so grateful for how much this center cares and truly helps those who are looking for it. read more

So I had stumbled into this place after being forced to do Counselling from a situation...ehrm. I am so glad I found this place. The counselors here are very skilled and talented at what they do...Counselling. I cannot believe I haven't gone into Counselling sooner...many years wasted not seeking help earlier that would've prevented so many problems. Because of the stereotypes, stigma, and not being able to accept my problems or be aware of how Counselling actually helps normal people just stuck with bad habits, habitual unhealthy thoughts or patterns of dealing with themselves life and those around. I used to think Counselling was only for truly crazy pill-popping people and that belief alone has kept me from seeing some great counselors earlier. (It's true there's a stigma of mental health from the whole Robin Williams affair etc). I hope this stigma is lifted in the near future as Counselling is not solely for mentally ill who need medication, it's for normal people with abnormal problems or situations or people in their life who may feel helpless and. overwhelmed in dealing with those things or situations living with around them and need some guidance and a caring ear to listen. The counselors have been dealing with so many clients, they have the experience to cut through the muck and get right to the heart of the matter, give a unique perspective, and maybe identify new problems you never knew were there. The hardest part may be to accept there's a problem and enact changes in your life that actually works towards solving the problem... Rather than just settling for second best, undermine your life by living with the problem that you really don't need to live with, letting the problem fester, remain unsolved, and perhaps chance that It grow out of proportion, and lead to worse things.. down the line. This is like getting an oil change in your car to prevent bigger problems in the future. And if I had gone sooner, it would've helped me to steer me away from some big costly problems happening that could most likely have been prevented. Yes, it ain't pretty seeing the shit hit the fan! :( My opinion from coming here. These counselors are truly skilled and get to the heart of the matter. There are many interns as well as licensed...both equally impressive. They are sincere, trustworthy, and care about truly helping you to solve your life problems. It makes me feel more comfortable opening up in Counselling with someone who has my best interest at heart, rather than judgemental people who may not care one way or the other to help you. I'm not trying to paint them as gods who will magically solve your problems, but they give you tools to practice and experienced guidance in your approach to make your life where you want it to go... This organization is focused on benefitting the community it seems and is an asset to the city of Los Angeles. I am so glad I found this place. An unmotivated person like myself has hit the lotto here :) If you are finding yourself with a seemingly difficult problem, perhaps you should give open paths a try for at least a few sessions. So glad I did! I truly appreciate their help (dealing with things I used to think impossible to deal with) and words cannot express my gratitude. Yesterday..my supervisor sent a few of my co-workers and I to Open Paths Counseling Center for an Anger Management Training workshop. There I had the pleasure in meeting Kendall Evans, MFT, Kendall was the facilitator for the workshop. The information and resources gained from the facilitator was so valuable and fundamental! All the information that Kendall provided will definitely help me in implementing it when working with clients. I even consider practicing a few key strategies on myself ;) (growth is inevitable, change is intentional). Thank you Kendall for the valuable tools suggested! After being blindsided by my husband of 32 years who was and still is having an affair I was heartbroken ,confused,angry,sad,depressed,and really was so bad off I didn't even know what to do. Luckily my son opened his home to me and most importantly gave me the number to Open Paths. I was anxious about even calling and asking for an appointment. That took me a couple weeks to even do. When I finally called my call was picked up right away and in trying to explain why I needed to see someone I was a hot mess and probably kept her on the phone for a minimum of 15 minutes either saying things I was upset about or apologizing for basically just blabbing my whole story. Not once did I feel she wanted me to stop talking and just make an appointment and we could talk then. She was so kind and compassionate. She just kept reassuring me that it was ok and that's why they were there. I was also overwhelmed thinking how in the world could I afford $150 + dollars an hour to even get help. She quickly reassured me that it was based on a sliding scale so when I found out my cost per sessions that made me cry even more but they were tears of relief. I really could get the help I desperately needed. It's hard to meet someone and tell them all of your problems and insecurities and whatever else that's affecting your life in a negative way. I met Bridgett and immediately felt as much at ease with her in person as well. She really does care about me and she wants the best for me. It's a somewhat selfish thing where you can go talk to someone and it's really just all about you. The best part though is yep it really is just all about you and it's supposed to be. :) How often do we have that opportunity? Also with someone there to truly listen and help? Not too often.... There's a freedom that comes with therapy that you can say your deepest l darkest secrets to someone knowing it will never go any further than that room. We all carry guilt about things and therapy is a great place to deal with that as well. Even if I wasn't going through the worst time of my life I would want to go there now that I understand it more. It's a great place to learn how to take really good care of yourself first without feeling guilty for doing so since we're all pulled in so many directions. You're much more capable of helping the people you love and care about if you take care of yourself first. So I have come to believe that if we all engaged in therapy at even what I guess for lack of a better word I'd call maintenance we could and most likely would feel better about ourselves and be able to help our loved ones and just navigate this crazy fast paced world we live in so much better and in healthy ways. Yes it's harder than taking a pill and some people definitely need anti depressants but if you need a pill you most likely would benefit from therapy a great deal too cause the pills don't teach you anything on how to deal with your problems. I believe it would be difficult to find a more affordable professional place to take care of your heart and soul. So try to just pick up the phone and reach out cause there's help out there and all we need to do is make that first call and show up. I hope anyone reading this finds peace in whatever you're going through. read more

Wow. How come this counseling center doesn't have more reviews yet?? This center is wonderful-- good neighborhood (although they are moving to another nice location in Culver City in June), very professional and compassionate and affordable because they have a sliding scale. I love my therapist there and from what I see when I am in the center, all of the therapists seem very warm and caring. I just like the feel of the place and would recommend it to anyone who wants to work on themselves or if you have something difficult going on in your life. It has helped me tremendously. I know most of the therapists are in training there, but I know from my own experience in LA - there are as many amazing interns as there are crappy licensed MFTs, so don't let this deter you. There are no frills about this place, but if you want good therapy in a comfortable environment, this is your place. And it is nice to step out of the LA "scene" for a minute. Ahhhh, it is therapeutic! read more
