45 Downing - Beautiful Ceremony Set-up

The moment I walked in the Alger House, I immediately knew I had to book it. It is bigger than it…read morelooks in pictures and the decor is unique and antique. We recently got married there (8/6/16) and everyone was raving about what a great time they had. We decided to have a Gastby/Speakeasy style wedding in black and gold, and it worked perfectly with the venue. The statues and stained glass windows were absolutely stunning as a focal point for the ceremony. My favourite part was the upstairs garden room where the bridal party got ready. Everyone was snapping pictures in the bathroom as it looks like it is straight out of a magazine. Monika was our coordinator. She was very insightful, incredibly patient and accommodating, and did not hesitate to go out of her way to ensure our wedding was exactly what we had envisioned. Her experience in coordinating weddings is apparent from the get go and she wasn't shy to make suggestions and/or point out issues that may interrupt or make the flow of the wedding unnecessarily awkward. I ended up doing all the decor/flowers myself (we had a small budget wedding with 90 people) and Monika went out of her way to allow us to come in the day before (lucky for us they were not booked that day) to set everything up and rehearse. The best part about our wedding was that we came in pretty much on our budget (16,000ish). I had been very frustrated and upset with how expensive other venues were (we had checked out one in Brooklyn that was just a warehouse for 11,000- and that DID NOT include silverware/catering/alcohol- just the shell!). I finally came across Alger House by searching "inexpensive wedding venue NYC" and as soon as I saw it I had a great feeling. What blew my mind was that food, alcohol, linens, tables etc. was all INCLUDED! When I got the final bill from Monika I actually did a happy dance! I called my husband so excited that it was less than what I was expecting! Though it was inexpensive do not be fooled- it was the BEST SERVICE. Monika did the greatest job helping us coordinate our wedding. Because of her experience, our wedding was more than we could have hoped it could be. She was on top of everything- replying to emails within minutes, meeting with me several times to answer questions going above and beyond to make sure I had a good experience. On the day of the wedding as we were being reintroduced to the reception as husband and wife (after a swift conversion of the space-10 mins) the DJ played our first dance song. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Monika scoot over to the DJ and explain that it was our first dance song and the music quickly changed. She was ON IT. We would not hesitate to recommend the Alger House for a beautiful, intimate wedding and particularly Monika. We don't think our vision would have been possible without her.

Smells like cat urine when the metal door opens. Unimpressive exterior. Frightening…read moreentryway..carpet frayed on steps..phew smell that mold! Hot. Humid with a burning stench. There are nice spots to take photos. Use your own staff to avoid manager. Overall the place is unacceptable. This is NYC...you have choices. Shabby and in need of repair. Temperature control issues. Unpleasant unethical management.

There wasn't a hostess at the time but the bartender gave me a menu and gestured towards the tables that were available. I sat at a table in about the middle of the seating area across from the bar which had bench seating on one side and chairs on the other. The table itself was adorned with a small battery lamp and a fresh flower, super cute and brought the exact vibes I was looking for! There was a happy hour menu and I believe the prosecco was only $11 and the pick 3 cheese/charcuterie board was $22. Overall I felt the portion was big and fantastic value for a lil aperitivo prior to a show. My waitress did not check on me despite frequently passing by and largely ignored me apart from initial greeting and taking my order/setting down my drink and food in front of me. A different waiter took my payment when they came by to refill my water glass and ask if I wanted another drink. Overall it's a cute venue and I'd love to go back, but the wait staff made it feel a bit weird as a solo diner.

It's a sleek but interesting space - the overall building was built as a townhouse in the 1840's but has housed a General Store, family business, and a chorizo factory over the years before housing the first cast of MTV's Real World. The ground floor is very nice, shiny dark wood flooring, interesting furnishings, and a small garden in the back. In the basement there is a tiny speakeasy bar furnished with various period curios as well as restrooms and a small kitchen. Both floors are fairly long and narrow, maybe 2000 sq feet combined? Convenient and chic location and I think the space would work for a variety of purposes.

Between the questionable business practices, repeated attempts to charge additional fees, and the owner's aggressive conduct, this was one of the most concerning experiences I've had in my professional career. I oversee multiple productions a month for a fashion company and have worked with countless venues throughout the years. I understand the complexities of managing a space, but what we experienced here went far beyond any reasonable business practice. From the outset, payment and security deposit discussions were unnecessarily contentious. Once on-site, the owner repeatedly sought additional charges for supposed issues, including demanding we pay to steam-clean a rug in a room our team had never even entered. It felt less like a legitimate rental agreement and more like a constant search for opportunities to extract additional money. Her conduct toward our crew and talent was equally unacceptable. She was consistently hostile, verbally aggressive, and confrontational. At one point, she entered an area we were shooting in and screamed, "Get the f*ck out of here," despite never communicating that the space was restricted. Most seriously, she threw a metal rack at a crew member, with additional incidents involving physical contact with staff. She also restricted elevator access without warning, forcing our team to carry heavy equipment up and down stairs. When the elevator later became stuck, she blamed us and demanded additional payment to retrieve our equipment. Despite everything, our team remained professional, respected the property, and left it cleaner than we found it. When booking a venue, you're trusting someone with your people, your budget, and the success of your event. That trust requires transparency, professionalism, and basic respect, none of which we experienced here. I don't leave reviews like this lightly, but I feel strongly that others should be aware of what they may be walking into. Whether you're organizing a professional production, corporate function, or private celebration, I would strongly advise taking your business elsewhere.
