As an avid dog lover, it makes me happy to see dogs allowed in a business establishment. Aside from…read moreservice animals, dogs are not usually allowed in restaurants in Canada, so I absolutely love seeing them when I visit the UK. This cafe / gift shop serves casual fare, which was exactly what we wanted when we popped in for a light lunch. I adored the cups with the dogs on them, too. The food was very nice - I really enjoyed my avocado toast with streaky bacon - but the highlight for me was the lovely dog who came over to say hello when he smelled bacon. So calm and sweet and loved getting pets. I wish we had a place like this in Toronto. The gift shop side had some really pretty things and I purchased a couple of cute greeting cards. I wish I had an extra suitcase for my return trip as I probably would have bought a few more things here. Really lovely shop and I hope to visit again when I'm back in England.

Bandit is the resident Laughing Dog - calm, friendly, and a great ambassador for this mom & pop business. The entire establishment was very clean and nicely laid out. If you aren't a dog lover, or are iffy about dogs/pets being in a business, I'd still give Laughing Dog a chance before making up your mind. Bandit's presence can be pretty discreet so don't let that put you off from enjoying this Brighton offering. Laughing Dog brings together a locally sourced cafe, a shop with a good variety of offerings form local artists at a wide range of price points, and a mini "art gallery" experience in showcasing local art exhibits. I think it's a great concept to experience some of the Brighton local creative flavor and menu in one place. I visited during an impromptu afternoon getaway during a London business trip. I thought I'd be able to snag a sandwich to go, but unfortunately by the time I arrived, the kitchen was closed (it currently closes at 5:30 p.m.). I was still able to get a slice of not-too-sweet, handmade cake from their display to go and while I can't remember the name, I can tell you it was delicious as breakfast the next day! Way better than hotel food. I heard a "woof" while I was ordering and it made me happy to know there was a furball running around somewhere. I bought some cards from the shop and on my way out, got to finally meet Bandit in person although he was on a mission and was quickly on his way. Beautiful dog! Tip 1: To catch a cab back, ask the shop staff for directions to a hotel a few minutes away where there is a taxi queue. I was able to catch a cab back to the Brighton train station without a wait. Tip 2: Check their Facebook page and website. Laughing Dog sometimes organizes evenings with local bands, dancing, food, and drinks. They also may have a special art exhibit going on.

There were locals discussing plans, Mandarin students (I presume) chatting over spa water, and (may I mention again) Pearl Jam playing through the sound system. If I lived here, this would be a regular spot for me. Service was outstanding. The proprietor and I exchanged a few words as I told him that I had walked in because Muse is one of my favorite bands. He told me that the cafe was named after them. This is completely corroborated by the framed caricature of Matt Bellamy on the wall. If you have a chance, walk in and say hi. I think you will love it as I do.

Very welcoming french accent with a smile, he explained he was waving a welcome (not a 'we are closed)! I requested coffee, and pulled out my card, in a very gracious manner, he said, "...no problem, you can pay later; please sit and enjoy first" He also came by, and voluntarily gave me the wifi pwd (never had that experience before!) Vibe - several people came in and out, and you could tell that they were locals, who enjoyed hanging out at this cafe (making it a true cafe). I would be a regular, if I lived in Brighton!
