It's been a while since I was in Opal Lounge. Last time was when I was through staying overnight with a friend. I'm three starring because it was quite some time ago and can't really judge the club now. It was sleek, flashy and full of girls with massive blonde hair and intimidating heels. Without prior warning from my friend, I turned up wearing a stupid gimmick t shirt, a pair of baggy jeans and DC trainers. Needless to say I felt uncomfortable as hell. I'm not the kind of girl who is into power dressing for the evening. I love dressing up but am equally as happy slouching about in jeans (although I am admittedly a bit girly now, and will slump about in a dress more often than not). But you get the drift - I'm not out to take someone's eye out in killer heels. Loads of pretty ladies in here and sure gents will enjoy that but it's a bit too high maintenance for me. We were there on a Saturday so it was busy, expensive and a bit too showy for me. I understand they do student nights which might be a bit more chilled out, but although it was nice for what it was I get the impression it's style over substance. Liked by many which is evident from how busy it can get, but not for me. Not relaxed enough.

Even the family tried to get a reservation during the holiday for dinner which wasn't available. People usually book way in advance when it's the holidays. And that's not just for the main dining room. They couldn't even get it for the bar area. Well, it was after the holidays when we walked in asking if there was anything available for a drink. Our luck, the lounge was available. Dining room was still all booked out. It was fine, lounge when you walked in gives you that gentleman smoking lounge vibes. The dark wood, tufted seats and the library wall. Faux I believe which maybe alcohol behind it. Even the bar area was quite nice. As it was the holidays or after, the place was still well into all the decoration. The detail they put into this place is magnificent. The whole aesthetic and atmosphere was amazing. Regardless if you in the main room or one of the lounge, it still worth it. There were loads of people just coming in to take pictures. All the staff were well dressed and presentable. The Dome, an institution of Edinburgh that is worth checking out. For a meal or drinks or even a wander through.

We were lucky enough to just show up and grab a semi-circle shaped booth by the bar without any wait. We LOVED that a) the cocktail menu clearly stated "All drinks vegan, please inform staff of any allergens before ordering" and b) that they had the shape of the glassware next to the drink name. The bartender even took some time to make recommendations based on both what was most popular with customers and what the house/staff favorites were. We ended up going with the Porty Licks (gin, pineapple liquor, passionfruit, toasted almond topped with edible flowers) and Green Room (bourbon, peach liquor, lemon, peach, basil yuzu). Both were really well balanced drinks! Next time I'd get the King Khan (spiced rum and a mango oat lassi) or the Hare Krishna (mango, oat milk, chilli, coconut cream, and cardamom - sounds like a lovely non-alcoholic beverage and dessert)!

It ended up being one of the best dining experiences of our entire trip to Scotland. The food was absolutely outstanding, easily the best we had during our time in Scotland. We loved having the chance to try a Scotch egg and the Scottish pies, and everything was flavorful and beautifully prepared. The drinks were equally delicious. The atmosphere was warm, cozy, and welcoming, with the perfect blend of neighborhood bar and restaurant. Service was exceptional from start to finish. The bartender was incredibly attentive and took the time to explain the different whisky tastings to my husband, which made the experience even more memorable. What made the experience even better was the value. The food and drinks were very reasonably priced, especially considering the quality and level of service we received. What started as a last-minute reservation turned into one of the highlights of our trip. We would absolutely return and highly recommend Element to anyone visiting Edinburgh. 5/5 stars.

Extremely convenient location wedged conveniently between the…read moreinsanely touristy old town and the bourgeoning hipster Mecca of Leith, and directly abutting, I am told the epicenter of the cities gay scene. The lovely century plus old building is beautifully restored and tastefully updated. If the 3rd floor walk up room might count as a negative for some, at this point in life I appreciate anything that forces even an iota of more of something even suggesting of exercise into my life whatsoever. Staff was uniformly courteous and helpful with my needy jet lagged ass. Unfortunately what you gain in terms of a strategic location, and charm inside the premises, you lose in terms of the immediate view outside of your room. While the building itself and a few spare stragglers like it in the immediate area, as well as the plaque outside indicating that Arthur Conan Doyle's birthplace was in a once existing building across the street, suggest the surrounding few acres were once as lovely and ancient as most of the glorious historic streets of this ridiculously enchanting town, its sadly no longer the case. Somehow this district avoided historic preservation, and in its current stage is pretty much comprised of at least 50 percent active construction zones with gaping holes of torn up streets and massive building footprints. The remaining half of the area is already completed monolithic hideously modern shopping malls of the type I would suspect must already be gravely threatened by online shopping. As distressing as the view outside my window was to view during my short stay here, those stores proved convenient when I needed some adapters and a stop at a nearby apple store, and a mere 5 minute stroll put me firmly in the center of some truly breathtaking scenery. At the end of the day it offers a solid value and friendly hospitality in comfy and low key elegant accommodations in a central, if soulless feeling locale. Oh yeah; and one word of advise: This place oddly apparently has 3D TV sets in at least some of the rooms (which by the way, in a cute touch, are each named after one of Scotland's beloved "loches' aka lakes). Be aware that those glasses are in there for the TV, and do not make the same mistake I did and assume they were novelty son glasses there for the guests to take as souvenirs. I guess the fact that the sun barely ever shines in this country would have been a good indication that they wouldn't be offering gratis shades...womp womp...
