ONRoute is Canada's service station and rest stop operator along their Highways 401 and 400 in…read moreOntario province.   These rest stops are both invaluable and excellent.  They are located very close to the highway for easy entry and exiting, are clean, pretty standardized, and spaced apart by roughly 50 - 60 miles.  They normally have Canadian Tire's Gas+ gas stations, and stalwarts like Tim Hortons, Subway, Burger King, Popeye's, and Starbucks amongst several others.  We drove to Toronto and you can get there from Chicagoland via either Detroit and Highway 401 or Port Huron and Highway 402.   We took 402 going and 401 returning. There are no ONRoutes on Highway 402 and it is a quieter, more desolate stretch of driving, just fyi.  Highway 401 and availability of the ONRoutes is the way to go unless there is some big traffic snafu.

They might have been in between cleans at the time because there were some stalls with surprises in them and the counter area was a little messy.

If you drive this way often, you'll understand how boring, flat and how there isn't much scenery until you see the windmills in the Chatham area. The place is always clean, the women's washrooms are for sure always clean when I use them, and usually one side is blocked off because they are cleaning it. They also have a CTC gas bar if you need to fill up, a Market Place, to get bottles of water, or a quick snack, and this OnRoute has a Tim Horton's KFC, and A&W if you need a bite to eat. This is always an easy place to stop and take a rest if you need it whether you're traveling from near or far. Clean washrooms, clean dining area, staff always seem to be on top of everything and there's a Tim Horton's, what more could you ask for in a rest stop?

The room had 2 queen sized beds along the left wall, and along the right wall there was a wardrobe, a small desk area with one chair, a dresser, and a small fridge. I found out that the rooms are all the same size, but there were at least 3 other room designs: you could get a room with 1 bed and a sitting area; one bed with sitting area and 2 bathrooms, or a separate bedroom with 1 bath, a sitting room, and a kitchen. For this stay, I wish we had gotten a 1-bed with sitting area, but what we got worked. Staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is really compact inside. The one thing I missed was a lounging area in the lobby. To gather in larger groups and people-watch. Here they had a couple of couches and a chair in front of the elevator and in between the check in desk and breakfast area. But the staff monitoring breakfast activities sat there until they were needed in the breakfast nook, sometimes drinking their own beverages and talking amongst themselves.
