But seeing L&L Hawaiian BBQ come to the Metro made me flip since this was one of my go-to lunch places during my college days back in the U.S.. Sadly, my excitement quickly changed to disappointment when we received our orders. I got my favorite, the chicken katsu plate, an order of Spam musubi and the gf ordered the seafood combo plate. The musubi was served first and we both looked a bit confused since the slice of Spam was so thin. I kid you not (look at my photos) the ratio was about 95% rice to 5% Spam. Also, when we tried taking a bite, the thing just fell apart and we ended up having to eat it with a fork and spoon. SMH. Next up, the katsu and seafood plates came and they were also disappointing. From the many times I ate at L&L in the past, I always remembered being served huge portions of freshly cooked and delicious food. We got none of the above in both of our plates. The katsu plate I got looked like shriveled up niblets of dry chicken, two teeny scoops of rice, an even teenier scoop of macaroni salad and some weird tasting sauce (I assume it was their take on katsu sauce) that accompanied it. The gf got her similar plate with BBQ chicken, fried shrimp and fish. And to be quite honest, none of it was very appetizing. Shrimp and fish both were very greasy and didn't really taste like anything. The BBQ chicken, one of their claim to fame items, wasn't anything special and had an off sweet taste to it. Like I mentioned earlier, there's always a sense of excitement yet caution in me whenever a favorite U.S. franchise of mine makes the jump over to the Metro. In this case, it's sad that the L&L Hawaiian BBQ we have here in Manila taints the great experiences I had eating at their branches back in the U.S. with this very poor showing.

They don't just offer your regular run-of-the-mill cheeseburger. They have different kinds of interesting specialty burgers. Their bestseller is Kailua Burger which is basically a cheeseburger with Swiss cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms. Personally though, I like the Fire Burger. It had onion rings, bacon and the fire sauce which gave the burger a little spicy kick - just the way I like it. Also, the bun was super awesome and the new shoestring fries are addictive. Highly recommended. Go give it a try. And don't be afraid to go for the 9 oz. burger. It's not as big as the sample says it is. They have the pre-shrunk raw patty size on display. The patties aren't that thick.

It meant only one thing: Hawaiian food. In the Philippines. Oh my god. I must have it! Teddy's Kailua Burger is good if you like burgers with some awesome sauce beef, and I definitely recommend it. But to all my fellow non-burger-loving people out there, I ask that you try the Loco Moco or Western Loco Moco at Teddy's. Now you might be thinking, 'Loco Moco? What the heck is that? Will it turn me crazy?' Yes! Sort of. The Loco Moco is a modern Hawaiian dish with a sunny side up egg resting on top of a hamburger patty, which happens to lie over a bed of hot white rice, all slathered with their special gravy, and yes, it's amazingly simple. Slice through that egg and tender beef, mix the yolk with the sauce and the rice for a taste of paradise! And to take it up a notch, add bacon and onion rings with the Western Loco Moco. Either way, the Loco Moco is a mountain of awesome, like a burger without a bun and those pesky vegetables. Sorry, vegetables. Whether you're hankering for local Hawaiian food or simply curious about what something called a Loco Moco would taste like, Teddy's Bigger Burgers is the place to try it. Mahalo, Teddy's!
