After a little while, that family member brought some Arrogant Bastard Ale for me from Friendly Spirits and I thought I needed to give the place a try. I finally got (and took) my chance. Delighted I did. The store isn't very large, but they're prudent with what they stock. Wines were plentiful in what they deem their "Wine Country," sorted and signed helpfully. Beers are available cold or in their warm shelf segment for specialties. Liquor is in a few runs of aisles like any store. The staff was very forthcoming and eager to assist, which I appreciated, even as I was just getting the lay of the land. Prices were fair - they know what they're doing and charge accordingly. There were a few deals in the wine section, and bonus points for carrying several less-common beers in singles on the top shelf of their coolers at reasonable costs. I walked away with a Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin, Captain Lawrence Imperial IPA, Abita SOS Pilsner, and a Pike Naughty Nellie (all bombers), and a great first impression of Friendly Spirits. I have visited before, but this was my first visit in about six years or so. They have an absolutely enormous selection of alcoholic beverages, but I was only interested in exploring their very impressive selection of craft beer. I don't make it to this area very often, so I was most looking forward to see if they carried anything that's either hard to find or just totally unavailable in my home area of New Haven, Connecticut. I spent maybe a half hour just walking down the aisles and seeing what all of the options were. Afterwards, I was ready to begin shopping. I ended up purchasing a pretty sizable haul which should keep my refrigerator full for a while. Most of the beers I grabbed were rare barrel-aged stouts, but I also picked out a few IPAs and other various styles that no longer get distribution in my home area.
