One World Jiu Jitsu Academy lives up to its name in its ability to unite practitioners of all levels and empower them to learn and train in an amazingly welcoming gym led by respectable, experienced coaches. Headed by Mike Prudencio, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy had its humble beginnings and has grown significantly through the years and within that span has been home to quite a few experienced BJJ practitioners. Mike and his team do a fine job in cultivating a strong community through respect for each other and the gym - the annual friend and family social events always have a good showing! Whether you've had some experience in the sport and are looking for a new gym with great people to train, a completely newcomer to anything related martial arts, or perhaps a parent looking for an extracurricular for your child, One World will open their arms to you with something to offer. Although One World was not our first introduction to Brazilian jiu jitsu while we researched for gyms, it ranked highest on our list due to the location, flexibility of the scheduling, training space, and coaching staff. Just a couple blocks away from the highway and being quite central in Newark, the gym is easily accessible. There's plenty of parking since most of the other establishments here aren't well frequented or mainly warehouses/non-customer facing offices. Adult classes are offered multiple times a day (early morning at around 630, mid morning at 11, and evening at 6) almost everyday of the week. The kids classes are also offered multiple days of the week (weekday evenings around 5 and Saturday mornings around 10). There may be different days/times for gi and no gi but they have a convenient online calendar that is kept up to date. Each session typically consists of warmups, drills, techniques, and open rounds of rolling. They also have two mat areas. The main mat area is huge and can accommodate large classes (sometimes the kids classes can get upwards of 30-40) with still ample amount of space for training and drilling. The secondary mat area is primarily used for no gi training when the main mat area is being used for instruction. And finally the coaching staff consists of some really experienced instructors in addition to Coach Mike. Their attention to detail and ability to motivate the athletes adds tremendous value to each visit. In addition, the instructors for the kids classes are so patient while firm to enable each kid to grow and advance at their own pace. For those looking to advance their game, Mike and his team of coaches will enable you to hone the fundamentals in addition to expanding your toolkit of techniques. The group of folks coming to this gym check their ego at the door and are all very willing to share and learn from each other. There are quite a few competitors who will certainly push your limits and help you get to the next level. If you're a newbie, welcome to the club! We all started one way or another but what's important is that you start and keep coming back. Time on the mat will level up your game and with some patience and dedication, you'll continue to build confidence, get fit, and develop practical skills for self defense and competitions. And as a parent, you'll feel right at home with fellow parents who have also sought out an activity for their children to participate in to gain intangible skills (confidence, self discipline, conflict resolution, social belonging, mentorship to name a few) while learning some practical techniques for self defense. They start children as young as 7 years of age but it may also depend on their maturity. I personally came in with no formal martial arts experience and have to say, it was one of the best decisions. As a father, finding a new hobby to enjoy on my own as well as with my children and redefining myself as the kiddos grow up has made this journey a very rewarding experience. The community has been great to foster that personal growth and it's been fun to bring the new generation into the sport. I've been going to One World for almost two years now; and have enjoyed every day of that journey. The head coach Mike is a really kind and down-to-earth person that makes you feel comfortable from your first day. I think he's done a great job of creating a chill culture at the gym that perpetuates down to the rest of the coaches and students. I actually tried out 3-4 other gym before I landed at One World. Some of the other gyms made me feel like they just wanted my money; by trying to lock me into annual contracts with multiple hidden fees. One World's fees are super transparent, and you can bring your own gi. All of the coaches have their own unique teaching style and so you can pick and choose the classes that matches the way you learn. But if you're like me, you'll try to get into class whenever it fits your schedule. To start with One world BJJ is like a family to me and not just an academy. I moved from West Virginia in 2011. I was searching for jobs and along with I used to search for BJJ clubs. When i got my Job offer from a top company in Fremont, I was very certain I would like to train at One world BJJ. I dont have enough words to appreciate the instructors and training partners. I have been training diligently for about 1 month now. Since I was used to doing Crossfit daily, sometimes twice a day, I approached BJJ with the same approach. I see results and improvement with more time spent on the mat. Physically in terms of strength and conditioning I am fairly fit and wanted that confidence before starting. You do not need to be in great shape to begin learning it. BJJ will make you into a fitter and stronger person. I began learning for 2 main reasons: my children and self-defense. All women should know some basic self-defense. BJJ will definitely offer that for women since the main fighting position is on the ground. It isn't wrestling though it looks like it. It is highly technical and can be frustrating at times but I am a serious athlete so I tend to overthink the details. Overall, beginners, women, older people are all welcome. Yes there are a lot of men but try it. It isn't as testosterone-y as you would think. OW is a great place with no ego and my family and I are grateful to be on this journey for a lifetime. Man where to start with this gym. I joined One World about 2 years ago after I decided to switch over from my old gym and to be honest I haven't looked back since. If you see looking for high intensity training with world class expertise this is the place to be!!! The level of competition here is second to none and I can always count on having a great training session every time I walk in. I have been training with One World for about a year and a half now and I can not recommend it highly enough. Having trained at 3 other gyms in different places before work brought me to the area I found One Word to be the best of them all. Mike an Fookie are great instructors and are friendly, knowledgeable and really care about their students. I'm not on the one world team, but they have a Sunday open mat and they have always been more than welcoming. Going to another school to roll is always a little uncomfortable at first, but the team there makes you feel at home and everyone I've met there from that school or any of the 40+ other people that go to the open mat have been cool and there are no egos, just good rolls. Also I can't say enough about the open mat Sunday's. There are belt levels from white to black on the mats every week and even the white belts there are extremely good. It has definitely helped my game to have so many different partners and I look forward to it every Sunday. read more

Three stars. Although, A-OK is not the best description for what I saw. If you look at Martial Arts school reviews you seldom see anything less than five stars. Students and parents tend to be enamored with their instructors and they seldom have experience with more than one school or one style. Because of moves and time in the military etc, etc, I do have experience with a good number of schools. Recently I have been looking for a school for my son and visited One World a couple times. I Do Not have bad things to say about the instructors. What I saw was kind of average for that type of school. They do have a large facility which is nice. I saw what looked like uniforms from 5-6 different schools on the children. I'm not sure if several schools consolidated or ? It is good that they don't force students to buy new uniforms because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uniforms can be rather expensive. These are the negatives I took away and why I will not be bring my son there. 10-15 minutes before the start of class most of the students were already there sitting against the back wall. The children's ages ranged from about 4 to 14. I guess they don't encourage stretching or practicing of techniques before class because no one was doing so. Hip Hop music was playing and it played throughout the class. There was only one very soft spoken instructor to run herd on 22 students. Sometimes he had trouble hearing the students questions. Whether this was because the students were soft spoken or because of the music is up for debate. After 5 - 10 minutes of warm-up exercises the instructor called a bathroom break. As stated most of the kids were there well before start of class, yet they obviously are not encouraged to use the bathrooms beforehand. Class stopped for at least ten minutes, as what seemed like a majority of the kids used the facilities. Not wanting to take their Gi tops into the bathroom the kids took off their belts and tops and just threw them in heaps on the dirty backroom floor. When they came back, quite a few kids were still dressing as they walked back across the training floor. Judging by the stripes on their belts and their ages, these were kids who had been at the school for a while. They were dragging their belts across the floor as they walked back to their place in line. Maybe I am old fashioned, but uniforms and Obi / belts are symbols of school pride and respect for your training. These actions show a lack of respect for their art. I came to One World last year brand new to Jiu Jitsu with no experience at all. This can be intimidating especially walking in as a woman to a sport that is male dominated. Right away Mike, Fookie, and Nam made me feel welcome. Everyone is willing to teach and I never felt "new." Mike is supportive and very understanding when life happens and Jiu Jitsu takes the back burner by touching in with his students and making accommodations. I have been training at One World Jiu Jitsu on a regular, weekly basis since mid-June of 2015. Prior to that, I had no knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but had some experience in the grappling arts. Mike, Fookie, and Nam are all great instructors who provide top-notch instruction that allows an individual to learn and understand the techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Class usually starts with a moderate difficulty warm-up, followed by practicing that day/week's technique, followed by some rolling (sparring), and sometimes a cool down that can be difficult or easier depending on the instructor's mood. Overall, the training is tough yet very enjoyable and the three instructors are there help you learn and achieve the best of what you are capable of. The other people who train here range from regular competitors who are here most days of the week to casual practitioners who may come in every other day. Regardless of who they are, everyone is here to help each other learn and have fun; there's no massive egos trying to tear your head off. I would highly recommend anyone to come in and try it out here if you are interesting in learning the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. read more
