Coach Bryan has been extremely respectful, welcoming and focused on individual needs of his students...within reason. His drills are always followed by motivation and application. When running drills he walks the room to ensure every student is able to perform the technique to the best of their experience and fitness level. If needed runs the drill with you personally. He expects you to put in the work and is not afraid to be frank when you are not mindful. This is of great importance as you are paying for his service as are others around you. Why waste your money and other's time? His gym is always spotless and never odorous... I have a bit of OCD so that is a great compliment. He is strict on mat cleanliness. He took me in old, bad vision and poor physical condition and is keeping me motivated, healthy and happy... my doctor loves him for that as does my wife. I always look forward to class and never regret any money spent ... even on a fixed budget totally worth it. Thanks Coach Brayn for being there.

Very disappointing experience with Portland Thai Boxing…read more I wanted to train while I was visiting Portland and PDX Thai Boxing seemed like an awesome spot. I emailed the gym to ask about waivers/drop-in fee but didn't receive a response. I figured I could handle everything when I got the the gym. Once I got to Portland I decided to take the 10am Monday class. After spending the money to take a Lyft to the gym, I get there and no one was at the front desk. Someone pointed me towards one of the coaches and I asked him about a drop-in fee. The coach informed me that PDX Thai Boxing doesn't do drop-in's because of Oregon Covid policies. Apparently I was supposed to sign up for some online portal that would've let me sign up for class. Since I didn't sign up, I couldn't train. The coach informed me that there was a phone number I could call to talk to someone and then asked me to leave the gym (he wasn't mean or disrespectful about it). I called the number and got a voicemail. The coach was doing his job and the policy is this policy, but it sucked to get turned away from the gym. I should've called ahead, that was my mistake. Overall, the whole experience felt really bad. The worst part is that the gym looked really nice! If you're looking to train here make sure you call ahead or you might get turned away.

It was my…read moreintroduction into martial arts of any kind and certainly kept me from becoming one of America's fattest children. It was the first time in my life I was able to do splits and really apply my ability to defend myself. Though my philosophy on self-defense / combat has changed considerably through my current practices of Jeet Kune Do, I still have a lot of respect for those who take the time to practice some aspect of self-defense. It's awesome for fitness and provides some level of self-discipline while channeling a whole new level of self-confidence. The process of belt promotions and facilities maintenance is sure to have changed since I first attended years ago. There were all sorts of students ranging from various ages and an even number of boys and girls. Prices were modest back then and are likely to be significantly higher now. Just remember that engaging in any type of martial arts is going to be pricey, it just depends on how what you might consider reasonable. For those who are looking for something different and a nice way to get fit, I encourage those in the area to seek Dave to begin a new journey in martial arts.

Please do not write back to me on here as you gross me out as much as the yeast smell. The class schedule is fine unless you have mother that had a stroke right after you trained for a marathon and there is no "pausing" for family emergencies. They straight up don't care and I have watched them cross the line with teen girls. Gross.

I recently attended a beginner's class at Quantum, and it was an absolute BLAST! I really had no…read moreidea what to expect because I've never done anything like this before, let alone how my body would handle it considering I've only been regularly exercising for the last 2 months or so. First off, while this place could easily be a set for Karate Kid, there isn't that sense of machismo or ultra-competitiveness that you'd think you'd encounter here. Their style isn't so much focused on self-defense or sport (but the movements that are taught can obviously be used in such a way) but much more about learning about your body and how it moves through space, and how to leverage your breathing to make those movements easier and more effective. When doing kicks and strikes, even though there's lots of shouting, the attitude of the instructors is not to challenge but to recognize that we're doing something that's meant to be fun, so there's lots of smiling and laughter. The business is a non-profit and the founder and several instructors are LGBTQ, which all contributes to an inclusive and approachable environment. Plan to wear comfortable workout clothes (without zippers so you don't damage the mats) and also plan to kick off your shoes and socks when you arrive. You'll also be expected to step onto/wipe your bare feet on a mat that has a vinegar and water solution on it, just to help keep things clean. The session started off with about 30 minutes of intense (to me) stretching. The movements go pretty quick, and if you're as poorly coordinated and out of shape as I am, the instructors will helpfully point out alternate movements and positions, and will remind you to only go as far as your body will let you. This is followed by a few minutes of quiet meditation. Once you're loosened up and have gotten your heart rate up, the instructors will start walking you through some basic stances, then some kicks (first just through the air, then against someone holding a big pad/shield), then elbow strikes, then you'll start to put it all together, and by the end of the 90 minute session you'll be doing flying side kicks! In our session, one person did sustain a minor (I hope!) injury when not landing quite right after a kick, we all stopped and the instructors were right there to make sure she was alright. The session ends with a quick sit on the mat to talk a bit more about what was learned and how everyone's feeling/cover any extra questions that anyone may have. Bottom line: if you're an adult that wants to learn more about martial arts, and wants an approachable, inclusive, non-intimidating experience that doesn't pressure competitiveness, this is the place to go!
