Master Johnson has a very fuss-free style which fits really well for a serious studio.

Attended a few training sessions at their much reduced "teaser" rate. They REALLY pressure you to sign up for an annual, pretty non-breakable contract. Their monthly contract cost is pretty high considering that 99% of the training consists of exercises that I can do all by myself... such as running around the perimeter of the gym, playing jump rope, pushups, situps and so on. I signed up for this training because I wanted to learn something about Korean martial arts but that training was never forthcoming. Almost all of the students are young kids. Some VERY young. I was easily twice as old as the next oldest student. If you're a parent and don't mind paying $100/mo to send your kid to a PE-oriented day care center, then this could be the place for you. But if you are an adult looking for intensive martial arts training you may well find the curriculum here disappointing. Bottom line was that I felt I was paying a LOT of $$$ for "training" that just wasn't worth the fee. If all someone wants is an intensive PE workout, there are gyms around that charge in the $10-$15 per month range for that sort of service. I would have given this place one star except that it probably is a good venue for kids who have parents with unlimited funds.

OK, I am NOT an expert on Tae Kwon Do and this is the first time my daughter has ever been in a…read moremartial arts class. But I know good and I know great and this place is GREAT!!! I went to another Tae Kwon Do facility in Clackamas (before going here) and I was just simply trying to inquire about classes and schedules. I was ignored completely for 5 minutes (there were 2 men in the office and they saw me!) AND THEN I was rudely treated for the next 5 minutes. The Head Master Instructor (FINALLY!) invited me and my daughter into his office. I explained her age, what we were looking for and if there were any classes that were currently accepting new students. The Instructor advised me that he did not have the time to talk with me (even though we were THE ONLY ONES inside the facility!!! No one was waiting!!!), he handed me a pamphlet, circled a few days on a schedule and advised me that I would need to look at his website and call back to make an appointment with him. Needless to say, I was so discouraged at this facility, that I seriously considered not even putting my daughter into a class anywhere! That being said, I then stumbled upon USWC Tae Kwon Do of Happy Valley while I was touring the area (Did I mention I was new to the area??? Moved here 2 months ago from California) and shopping at New Season's Market. I thought "well, I will give it another try and see how we are treated and go from there." I am certainly glad that I took the chance on this facility!! Immediately upon entering, a very pleasant and help young man (Mr. Anel - Master Instructor) assisted us. He came right out of his office, greeted me and my daughter in a very pleasant, kind and soft voice. He took us into his office, I explained to him what we were hoping for and asked him if he thought his facility would be a good fit for my daughter. Mr. Anel then asked my daughter a few questions and then made a suggestion that we take 2 classes (that is the weekly schedule) and then decide. Mr. Anel didn't try to sign us up. He offered us (for $20) a uniform and 2 classes with no other obligation. Upon arriving to our first class, Mr. Anel and Mr. Tilley (another Master Instructor) - greeted us, assisted my daughter with her belt, taught her to bow and treated her like she has been apart of this class for months! I was SO impressed by the patience, manner, kindness and knowledge of both instructors!!! My stars, both of these instructors (SERIOUSLY ) have the patience of Job!!! There are several VERY rambunctious boys in my daughters class and both instructors NEVER yell, never criticize or demean any of their students!! Mr. Tilley is such a positive and happy young man. He is very encouraging and rewarding when working with all the children. Mr. Anel is AWESOME! He is also very positive, encouraging and happy while teaching. Mr. Anel gives plenty of warnings (in a very positive and kind fashion!) to children who are not focused or acting up! After about the 3rd warning he simply states that the child take a seat until they can regain their focus...then they can continue on with class. I think what impressed me the most about Mr. Anel was one particular incident. There was a child, from the class that follows my daughters, that had come to class with red eyes. The poor child's father was just AWFUL! The father was yelling at the kid from the minute he came through the door. The father was telling his son (in NOT a kind or nice voice) "Well! TELL! HIM!" The child (with his head down in shame and tears flowing at this point) walked over to Mr. Anel and advised him that he had lost his belt. Mr. Anel, calmly asked the boy if he had looked everywhere for the belt. The boy said he had. Mr. Anel told the boy it was OK (While Jack-Wagon Dad is still yelling from the doorway - "NO! IT'S! NOT OK!"). Mr. Anel never looked at the dad - he only kept his eyes and focus on the little boy (who was clearly embarrassed, humiliated and browbeaten by his own father!), told him he'd get him another and not to worry. That, my fellow Yelper's, are the true signs of Mr. Anel's integrity, character, kindness and that he (and Mr. Tilley) are all-around good human beings! My daughters confidence level and personality shine in this class. She absolutely LOVES her class!! She can't wait to go and she has learned to pay attention and keep focused - to which is a parent's dream come true!!! Many thanks to Mr. Anel and Mr. Tilley!!! We look forward to the classes and belts to come!! PersonaI Note: I know it's Mr. Anel & Mr. Tilley's job to teach our children, but what they probably don't consider is just how much they mold and shape our children into who they are and who they can become!! That is priceless to a parent - to have such positive and wonderful role models in this day and age!

I'm happy with the improvements I've seen in his behavior after class, even if most of the lesson's impact fades away within a day or two. Thankfully, another class is right there on the horizon! Tuition is reasonable, and there are plenty of available time slots for the various programs. Attendance in any time slot is *not* mandatory, at least for the Tiny Tigers program: you're free to bring your student to any available class for their program, throughout the week, depending on your schedule and flexibility. That's a nice touch that's not always offered at other dojangs and dojos. The staff at World Class Martial Arts somehow manage to corral more than two dozen kids at the same time, hold their attention for a half hour, and even impart some lessons (both physical and mental), with a reasonable amount of success. Sure, sometimes a child (often mine! haha!) will require some individual attention to get them to follow instructions and get them back on track, but the "sabom" (instructors) here are quick to notice distracted kids and move to intercept them, often dividing the troublemakers into groups separate from the more attentive students, and giving them personalized instruction. It's a good system, and it works! Gam sa ham nida!

Teaching respect, patience and other life skills all through Taekwondo. We looked into other martial arts types in the area (jiu jitsu, mixed) but our son was not interested in them. World Class Martial Arts Taekwondo was the winner for us. Their space is pretty fixed in size, but I wish the changing area was organized better. There is always lots of congestion in this area making it hard to get into and out of uniform. Due to rain and cold we prefer to change there than to wear the uniform in the weather and in the car.
