This is the best restaurant in the Rocky Mount, Wilson, and Tarboro area. Yes, the owners once worked in the Twin Towers restaurant in NYC, and their excellent knowledge in food continues in in this quaint small southern town. Overall, a decent place. Food was good, not great, and the service was quite lacking. A group of 5 of us walked in and were not greeted by anyone.. we stood in the doorway while each of the staff made eye contact and seemed as though they were all waiting for someone else to greet us. Finally someone said, "are you waiting for a table?" Nah, I'm waiting for the next Haley's comet, wbu? We were seated and the waitress came to our table.. Alice was her name. No smile, no greeting, just "what do you want to drink?" We ordered a bottle of wine and she was gone for another 20 minutes before returning with the bottle. The night continued on like this.. Alice would disappear from our table for 20-30 minutes at a time. The entire process was very very slow. I asked once to order our mains and was answered with "uhh hold on a minute" which ended up being more like 15. I noticed that the staff spent a lot of time on the iPad posi machines instead of tending to tables. A lot of time standing around with a decently full restaurant, all 5 of us were exhausted by the end of dinner. We were antsy and wanted our check ASAP, but again we waited. The icing on the cake, per se, was that they charged us for a dessert and scoop of ice cream that they brought out on their own accord for our birthday celebration that night. Not sure I'll be returning. Some major adjustments need to be made to the FOH. read more

In Tarboro visiting family. This place is a little GEM!!!!! Great service, great sandwiches, great atmosphere

Like always, we had a delightful meal at OtS. Started with our usual order of calamari. Then got salads. I loved mine with arugula, watermelon and goat cheese. Ordered a bottle of Pinot noir (OPP). Delicious. Two guests got the jambalaya. Full of seafood and relatively little rice, which is good. I got the short ribs. Perfectly prepared. Enjoyed some strawberry shortcake for dessert. This is best food for a hundred miles around and always worth the trip. read more

We were staying nearby at a B&B and On the Square was recommended. We made a reservation and drove about 20 minutes through beautiful farmland to get there and we were not disappointed. The waitress was charming and attentive. The presentation was beautiful and the flavor combinations superb! We had the fried green tomatoes appetizer and loved the addition of pimento cheese, a halapeno glaze and balsamic vinegar swirl on the plate. I had the swordfish and my husband had a steak and both were excellent with some nice sides. We chose the molten chocolate cake for dessert and luckily it was small and wasn't too much on top of the entrees. We have many good restaurants at home in Chapel Hill, and On the Square was definitely on par with some of our favorites. read more

Disappointed. Waited over 30 minutes for our reservation. Our waitress was mute, unhelpful and essentially scoffed at us several times during our meal. Food was okay, enjoyed the risotto, but nothing spectacular. Restaurant came highly recommended to us, and given the lack of fine dining experiences in Eastern North Carolina, we were horribly disappointed. Would strongly recommend Chef and the Farmer over this restaurant for the ambience, service and inventiveness of the menu. If you want to spend $100 on a quality meal for two, don't come here. read more

I like the food at On The Square very much, however the lady who takes your order at Lunch is very unfriendly and unaproachable in my opinion, This influeneces my experience in the restaurant. She needs a personality adjustment but the food is great read more
