It is hard to find a great CPA/bookkeeper and I wish someone had warned me publicly about this…read morecompany when I was looking so I feel I need to write my experience. Do not hire Kedra as your CPA or Janet (who works for her) as your bookkeeper. I paid this firm over $10,000 for bookkeeping and tax-related services for my business, and I ended up having to catch and correct basic errors myself. I found wrong expense categories, personal accounts listed as business assets, retirement-plan money left on the balance sheet after it had already left the business, incorrect 1099s, and a serious 2024 tax-basis issue in work the firm prepared. When I asked them to explain the numbers they used and provide support for their own work, they would not clearly answer or back it up. They had all the documentation from me they would need to not make constant careless mistakes. I want to be very clear about one thing, because I expect they may respond by saying I was asking them to do historical work outside their scope. That is not true. I repeatedly told them I was not asking them to reconstruct old years or do a historical forensic project or even to explain anything to me that was not just about why they used the numbers they did. I was asking them to explain and support numbers their own firm used in 2024 work they prepared for me. That is very different. I tried to resolve this calmly and directly. Instead, I was talked over, dismissed, and even hung up on rather than given clear answers. Kedra often seemed too scattered or too busy to keep important facts, documents, and prior conversations straight, which made everything more confusing. What bothered me most was the lack of accountability. I caught error after error, and when I asked about them, they would change the item (proving I was correct that they were wrong) and never explain why it had been done that way in the first place even when I would ask where they were getting their data to keep making so many mistakes. These were not obscure issues. They were basic bookkeeping and compliance items, and they had the records needed to do them correctly. In my experience, this firm was unreliable, unprofessional, and not trustworthy with important financial work.

I've been filing with Jeff Pickering for the last 2 years and never going to look at any other…read moresources to file my taxes. There are numerous instance where I found his knowledge in tax laws and customer service to be extraordinarily good. For my 2010 tax returns - it took us a long fight with IRS to get my refund, even though I had given up, Jeff insisted that I should get my refund, we had to stay with IRS for multiple hour long calls and finally got my refund on a complex filing. No other tax consultant will be patient and persistent enough to work with IRS to get their clients the fair refund. He never advertises himself as 'maximizing returns' , but very willing to work with you in an optimal return within the confines of the tax laws. Stay away from those who advertise as maximum return - it is an usually a segway for an IRS audit. And he has a wonderful staff who support in the tax filing ! Before finding Jeff, I was alternating between H/R block and filing it myself online. The biggest problem with H/R block is that the tax consultants have no motivation to do a good job, never updated with the latest information and have extremely inconsistent performance from one location to other. Few Tips: (1) Get all your deduction items in order - carry any receipts etc and preferably prepare an excel sheet with all your deduction items (2) If you have any stock trades - you might want to generate the Schedule D yourself - some companies such as TD Ameritrade provide free tools to generate Schedule D - if not you can find one online where you can upload your transactions and the software will generate the Schedule D (3) If you traveled internationally, prepare an excel sheet with each date of travel - if it was a business travel day or if it was a personal travel Finally - keep all the records - receipts, tax filing ... + make some of the notes yourself and keep them in a folder - IRS can audit tax filings and if you get a knock on your door - you want to make sure that you have your papers with you.

Two years ago my wife and I made the decision to engage with Smallwood and Associates, and that has turned out to be a smart business move! Cal has guided us through confusing transactions such as 1031 Exchanges, entity formation/capitalization and intracompany transactions. Even though my wife is a competent CPA, we decided our time was better spent helping our clients and spending time with our family, rather than stressing over the tax code complexities or looking over the shoulder of our prior CPA who merely "checked the boxes." Even during the hectic accounting season, Cal has always found time to sit down with us, face-to-face, to recommend strategies to reduce our tax burden and streamline our bookkeeping. We have saved a considerable sum in taxes since switching, and we no longer sweat tax season. I'm not sure how our experiences could have differed so wildly from the previous reviewer. We've found it easy to communicate with Cal, and we've always received first class treatment, though we're likely one of his smaller accounts. I'm guessing the reviewer probably provided insufficient/incorrect data, expecting miracles. The world's best CPA is no magician, and must rely on data as provided by the client! As the old saying goes, "Junk in, junk out." The "customer comes first" slogan proves a futile defense during an IRS audit! I sleep well at night knowing my returns are ACCURATE.
