Unit 9 Rehearsal Studio
(8 reviews)
It always astounds me how rehearsal studios can make so much money and still not manage to keep…read moretheir equipment working well, and though Unit 9 is better than many places I've used, over the years I've spent far too much time fiddling with PAs in that place trying to get a decent sound. Rates per hour are pretty standard and vary according to room size, but while you don't have to completely break the bank you're looking at about £30 upwards for a three hour session. I don't know how bands afford to rehearse twice a week! They do some special offers for solo artists or two people jamming together though, which is quite good of them. The studio is located on an industrial estate in Balham, about a 15 minute walk from the station and with tons of free parking, I found the staff to be pretty helpful and friendly but getting gear in and out down those skinny corridors can be a bit fraught especially at busy times when people from other bands loiter near the front desk. All in all a decent, honest place to make loud noise.
This is a satisfactory rehearsal studio if you're looking for something on the cheap…read more Pros: Relatively cheap. Eight different rooms to choose from. Don't have to book with ridiculous amounts of notice. If the room's empty and you turn up early, they usually let you go straight in. With two guitar amps, a bass amp, a drumkit, PA & multiple mics & mic stands, the backline is generous. Sell a lot of extras so not such a big deal if you forget anything. Cons: The PA sounds horrendous in the pink, white & green rooms at least, virtually no treble. In summer it becomes like an oven. The fan they put in the room is not enough to combat this. The evenings are split into two rigorously timed slots (6-9 & 9-12), one annoyingly early and one annoyingly late if you're coming there from work. The girl who regularly works there looking after the place is rude and aggressive to the point of psychosis unless you're one of her clique. Best keep the conversation to short sentences and don't forget pleases & thank yous or she'll shout at you. Any extras, such as forgetting your guitar pick and you have to buy one from them, there's no option to borrow. The signs around the place take the guilty until proven innocent attitude to their phrasing.

Well, my central heating broke down just then ... and I ventured out into the cold in the middle of the night to pick up a portable heater I had stored at a nearby 24-hour storage facility. So there I was stomping through the snow down deserted streets just to hear the sound of music getting louder the closer I got to my local Shurgard ... pure winter magic and I was upset to be on a mission (and didn't really want to go exploring with a heater under my arm while the cat was shivering at home). Anyhow, that's the long story of how I discovered that there was a music studio in the backwaters of Latimer Road. This is exciting news, the music's returning to West London, no longer just behind closed doors (there is a well established recording studios on the actual Latimer Road but they don't have parties for the public). That cold night I missed a live gig of new music but I have been following the pirates ever since on social media and loved last night's Pirate Sessions Launch party. Perfectly sized venue under the tube arches, next to what is left of the local industrial estate. Five stars for bringing the cool back to West London, in a perfectly sized venue, with a very affordable bar, good mix of people and, most importantly, great music.

This is a little recording / practice studio set up in the basement on an old butter factory just off the side of Camberwell New Road; fully equipped for your band rehearsal needs with three separate studio rooms, Dropout has always had an independent / "up yours, establishment" approach to business, which in turn provides a nice and informal space to practice in, with competitive prices too. The recording equipment, however, is not for public use; so if you do want to record you have to either hire one of the owners to records you, or you are more than welcome to bring in your own equipment and record yourself. It almost goes without saying as well; make sure to tidy up after yourselves for leaving mess is frowned upon. The pub just looks like any old old man's pub in London but you get a completely different feel once you step inside. I love the decor - heavy wooden furniture, dim lighting and candles, with tables placed around the bar make it feel really traditional and cosy. The theatre is upstairs and hosts and array of amateur plays and comedy nights. My friend used to run a comedy night on Sundays here and it was really great and inexpensive. This place is not only a brilliant pub but there's something for theatre buffs too - it's built it's reputation as a sold theatre/pub - great.

It's just such a shame the piano music doesn't come on from a little earlier, as this is the real appeal of this place, and the atmosphere only really comes alive once he starts playing. I'm assuming they have to wait for any performances to end. I was here from about 5.30pm, and whilst there was some (fairly quiet) background music on, there was a corporate event downstairs, so the music was off for a large part of the evening. I hadn't realised that the piano man wasn't on until late, so whilst there were a small number of my party left to enjoy it, most people had meandered off home by that point. It's a really nice place, I would just plan to end your work drinks here, rather than start them, as it's fairly 'plain' here without the performer.

What sets this place apart from every other bar I have ever been to is the clientelle. Note the time the live music starts.... 11pm. The bar here is almost entirely inhabited by performers that have just finished a show in the West End. If you don't sing for a living or earn your crust on stage you are the exception. The live music is almost invariably a grand piano and a singer or singers. Normally I would rather pierce my ear drums with pencils than suffer a karaoke night, here when the patrons decide to sing, you are in for something truly spectacular. The repetoire is generally much loved classic numbers from the last thirty years and show tunes and the standard is very high. It gets very busy after midnight and there's a reason for that. The atmosphere is friendly and the live music is great.

We contacted the Peacock Theatre to explain our utter disapointment with 'agents' of their company who they allow to sell tickets on their behalf. The response from the Peacock Thearte was 'we are sorry but there is nothing we can do'. ADVCE: Other than stop companies like Theatre Tickets Direct selling tickets to your shows might be something you could consider? Whilst we are going to watch the show, we will never attend the Peacock Thearte again. It is rather ironic that the Theartes here in London have been pleading for Government funding to help them survive the pandemic, and then allow companies like Theatre Tickets Direct sell their shows and treat consumers unfairly in their name. HERE BELOW IS OUR THEARTE TICKETS DIRECT REVIEW ON GOOGLE AND TRUSTPILOT BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY AND BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER USING THEM CHECK THEIR ONE STAR REVIEWS. So, my Wife tried to book two tickets for Saturday Night Fever at the Peacock Thearte for the performance on the evening of the 20 February 2022. Upon visiting their site she notice a block of three front row seats available so she proceeded to book two of the three seats available. She booked one of the two seats but when she tried to book the seat next to the one she had booked she found that system was not letting her do so. Frustrated with this she when out of the booking system and refreshed her browser. Upon going back into the booking system she clicked on the first seat she had booked it and was not showing as available any longer. She then thought well that seat has now gone and successfully booked the other two remaining seats. She went to the secure checkout and paid for the tickets. Within minutes of making the booking she received notification from her bank that Thearte Tickets Direct had debited the cost of all three tickets from her account. She immediately emailed Thearte Tickets Direct advising them of the error within tens minutes of receiving the notification of debit from her bank. She received a very abrupt email the next day from a Nandeep Vyas advising that it was now 'impossible' to issue a refund for the third ticket even though it was probably a glitch in their booking system. We have perused the one star reviews here and would tend to agree with the consensus of opinion expressed therein that the customer service is appalling and that they are potentially scamming consumers. We are consumer lawyers and we will not let this matter rest. We fully intend to drag the matter through the Small Claims Court for a princely sum of £35 to issue on these people, and have them explain their T&Cs to the court is well worth it, and we will publish the outcome here, win or lose. We have also written to the Chief Executive of the Peacock Theatre outlining our dissapointment in the way in which this company represent the theatres who allow them to sell tickets for their shows on their behalf.

We were down in the stalls and there are no pillars or other such construction in the middle of the hall, so none of the seats were "restricted view" I'd bought discounted tickets on Time Out and that is always a risk, since you do not know until you've picked up your tickets in the day of the show, what seats are going to be allocated to you. But at the Peacock, that risk is minimised - due to the afore mentioned absence of "restricted view" seats. Temperatures were comfortable throughout. There were cafeterias on both floors (stalls and circle), but we had just had dinner before the show, so we didn't brave the crowds milling around to check it out. They do have a lift for the disabled to use, so access is not an issue, even though the elevator is very slow. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think they have some kind of tie-up with Sadler Wells as they seem to have a lot of their shows coming up.

Sometimes, when the houselights are up, you can still see the booklined walls of the gallery and the dark wood panels where they haven't quite curtained everything off properly. The Croydon Clocktower is very well placed in Croydon, being close to East Croydon station and even closer to bus and tram stops.
