Do you remember that super cold week when the "Beast from the East" brought Siberian snow to…read moreLondon? Well, my central heating broke down just then ... and I ventured out into the cold in the middle of the night to pick up a portable heater I had stored at a nearby 24-hour storage facility. So there I was stomping through the snow down deserted streets just to hear the sound of music getting louder the closer I got to my local Shurgard ... pure winter magic and I was upset to be on a mission (and didn't really want to go exploring with a heater under my arm while the cat was shivering at home). Anyhow, that's the long story of how I discovered that there was a music studio in the backwaters of Latimer Road. This is exciting news, the music's returning to West London, no longer just behind closed doors (there is a well established recording studios on the actual Latimer Road but they don't have parties for the public). That cold night I missed a live gig of new music but I have been following the pirates ever since on social media and loved last night's Pirate Sessions Launch party. Perfectly sized venue under the tube arches, next to what is left of the local industrial estate. Five stars for bringing the cool back to West London, in a perfectly sized venue, with a very affordable bar, good mix of people and, most importantly, great music.

Metropolis Studios are located in Chiswick High Road next to the bus station this is also where they also filmed 'On The Buses' from this garage! this place used to be a power house in it's early days and was converted and was basically was the home for many very big recording artists including Queen that had a studio made for them as this was where they basically made history for many of their well known classic songs they produced at Metropolis Studios.

The studios are spacious and well equipped however even though spacious does get a tad warm in the room. They have a large mix base with all these knobs and buttons everywhere don't know what most of them done but looked impressive and was great watching the mixers at work. The experience with Richard and Fred of Right Said Fred will be one I will never forget. Near the end of the day of busy recording we had a tour around the rest of the building and it was great to see Queen's (Freddie Mercurys) piano that he used to take everywhere with him at these studios in a big hall area I even got to tinkle the keys of the great black piano. Sounded beautiful even though I don't know how to play. Also saw the room where Queen used to hang out and many other artists and other studios in which famous musicians have sung. However the studios can be hired out so its not always the rich and famous that use them. I highly recommend to anyone that is thinking of doing a recording. Facts: Metropolis Studios is one of the few remaining recording studios in London. Famous musicians such as Queen, Michael Jackson, Right Said Fred, Adele etc have sung in these studios. But before this place was a studio it was a Power House and was also used in the classic TV program "On the Busses"

It was rush, rush, rush, and some people on the staff were obnoxious, bullying, or just unpleasant generally. You can definitely learn a fair amount technically, ( If that's all you want!) but trust me, there's about one job available for every 200 graduates. Believe me, I was at it forever, and I am noted for a pleasant, low-key, very professional attitude! There just aren't any jobs opening in today's scene, where professionals usually have home studios. You literally will get nothing back for your money except heartache and broken dreams, and then have to look for a straight job anyway. They promised me employment assistance that they never delivered. Audio production and recording is truly just a who you know business. If you're 18 years old with no responsibilities and willing to work for snack crackers for 2 to 5 years and you know someone who can get you through the door to begin with - go for it! And that's literally what a staff member told me when I pressed him, but only after I had reached the end of the courses! Do yourself a favor: Spare yourself shelling out that kind of money, download a very nice free computer based DAW, get whatever interfaces, etc. you might need with all that cash you kept, and hip yourself to the many professional Youtube channels and videos, where I guarantee you will learn 100 times more than you ever will at anyone's scam recording school, and at your own pace at that! I'm not joking, I know the difference! And in the end, trust me, you'll be just as likely to find a job or not. I wish I had known what I know now then, and I would have never given them my hard earned money. I would have taken up a trade. Think long before you do it, and good luck!
