It always astounds me how rehearsal studios can make so much money and still not manage to keep their equipment working well, and though Unit 9 is better than many places I've used, over the years I've spent far too much time fiddling with PAs in that place trying to get a decent sound. Rates per hour are pretty standard and vary according to room size, but while you don't have to completely break the bank you're looking at about £30 upwards for a three hour session. I don't know how bands afford to rehearse twice a week! They do some special offers for solo artists or two people jamming together though, which is quite good of them. The studio is located on an industrial estate in Balham, about a 15 minute walk from the station and with tons of free parking, I found the staff to be pretty helpful and friendly but getting gear in and out down those skinny corridors can be a bit fraught especially at busy times when people from other bands loiter near the front desk. This is a satisfactory rehearsal studio if you're looking for something on the cheap. Pros: Relatively cheap. Eight different rooms to choose from. Don't have to book with ridiculous amounts of notice. If the room's empty and you turn up early, they usually let you go straight in. With two guitar amps, a bass amp, a drumkit, PA & multiple mics & mic stands, the backline is generous. Sell a lot of extras so not such a big deal if you forget anything. Cons: The PA sounds horrendous in the pink, white & green rooms at least, virtually no treble. In summer it becomes like an oven. The fan they put in the room is not enough to combat this. The evenings are split into two rigorously timed slots (6-9 & 9-12), one annoyingly early and one annoyingly late if you're coming there from work. The girl who regularly works there looking after the place is rude and aggressive to the point of psychosis unless you're one of her clique. Best keep the conversation to short sentences and don't forget pleases & thank yous or she'll shout at you. Any extras, such as forgetting your guitar pick and you have to buy one from them, there's no option to borrow. This is the place to rehearse for any South London based musicians out there. The rooms themselves are a little worse for wear but the amps and backline are good and easily changed by the staff should any problems occur. It's pretty cheap, they sell strings and plectrums should you find yourself without, and there's free tea and coffee for when you need a break! read more

Seem they've hidden the rude woman away, although i may have had the pleasure of being grunted at over the phone, the studios are cheapish but the PA dire drums terrible the small rooms are cold in winter hot in the summer and the blue room has its own dehumidifier as the floor sticks to your shoes and after a few hours you'll feel like your contrating TB. there have been quite a few negative reviews on here, mostly with regards to staff-related issues. i must say these made me a little apprehensive about the place, but i have to say my first session was most definitely a positive experience. perhaps i was fortunate not to experience the often-noted staff issues, but i found the studios to be well-equipped and affordable £11 for a two-hour solo session is right what i'd hope to pay. add to that a very convenient location at least for me! free tea coffee, and a well stocked shop for emergency provisions, and i will definitely be back read more

Unit 9 is a good enough studio for the money - it's fairly reasonable and the gear is good enough. I would never go there again though, simply on the grounds that the girl that works there is beyond rude. She's unnecessarily aggressive and has an attitude problem. I would not even dream of speaking to my worst enemy the way she spoke to me the last time I was there - and the thing is, she did while I was paying for the studio that would indirectly pay her wages. No sense of thanks or appreciation for the business - I would urge anyone else not to go there simply on the grounds that she is beyond rude. read more

Relatively inexpensive, it's not the Ritz but perfectly fine for band practice. I have been using these studios for the guts of 2 years and have never had any issues with the staff who are always friendly and accommodating. The female staff member other reviewers have mentioned must have left as I have only dealt with male staff. I don't have much experience of using the backline as I bring my own gear most of the time. Had an issue with an amp once which was promptly replaced. I have tried other studios in the area but Unit 9 comes out on top for me. read more

ha, you guys are all PUSSIES! so chuckles on the front desk can be a little off at times, but if you had to deal with a bunch of wannabe rock stars day in day out you would be too i'm sure. the gear is reasonable for the price, and even if stuff is broken the staff are happy to change it round. good parking facilities and good prices, can't really complain. great for cheap drum practices too. read more
