She brought up the idea of putting a theme on the service so we went with a Hawaiian theme since I am sure in my dad's perspective that is where he likely would have liked to be since he grew up there. I didn't realize all the logistics needed for the service...my brother put a slide show together with pictures from our dad's life and reverand Pat helped us identify all the folks needed for us to have the service run smoothly whether it be for running the video, recording the service, piano playing for the music, or putting the bulletin together (which they did an amazing job with too). I even did a little hula with my son as an opening activity! I can only hope when I pass on, whomever is left behind has the opportunity to go through a comforting process as we did.

I've seen people step up and care for each other in ways I've never experienced before. Our family has experienced that directly. People here are honest about their shortcomings. We try to do that as a church. We know we're far from perfect. There's plenty of ways we could grow and become more healthy. An honesty about that gives me hope that it will continue to happen. I also love that there is space made for people to be wherever they are in faith here. Yes, we believe that Jesus is Lord and there is life in following him. We also know that believing that, and living into it, is a process in everyone's life and it seldom looks the same from one person to another. I hope people don't feel pressure to be something they're not. So, we're a small church, trying to love each other, Jesus, and the world well. Nothing more, nothing less.

My name is Stephen Martin. I am a friend of Paul Patrick Peterson who passed away last April in…read more2024. I've been friends with him for 40 years and we were closer than most people know. He was the one who brought me to Christ in 1984, and we spent a lot of time together over the years doing recreational things, studying the bible, witnessing to unbelievers and challenging each other with scripture. When I moved away from Colorado to Oregon, we spent hours upon hours weekly and sometimes daily discussing everything under the sun from the Bible to politics to life experiences to our health to our families to our dating lives, etc. We were close. When I found out about his passing, I drove all the way from Oregon to Colorado to attend his funeral and memorial because I don't fly. Most of the people I met at those ceremonies were friendly, and they seemed to really care about Paul but one glaring thing stood out. It was the pastor of his church and please forgive me, but I can't recall his name. Although I thought he represented Paul's name quite well at both the funeral and memorial, he was cold in person. I tried to talk to him at the memorial, and it was a challenge because he looked right at me and decided to walk away as I was trying to get his attention. He looked at me like I was a bum dressed in rags even though I was wearing a 5K suit that was much nicer than his! I was driving a new car, I own my own home and I have a lucrative trade. I don't have tattoos, no piercings and no strange hair colors and yet, this is how he treated me. My daughter was with me at the time, and he treated her the same. She expressed an interest to attend that church because the congregation members were very nice to her, but he showed no interest whatsoever in trying to make her a part of that family. She still isn't attending a church and I think it's sad to say the least. Knowing Paul for as long as I have, I don't think he would have been okay with this.
