Two months after opening, I finally got a chance to tour the new Omaha Central Library with a group of academic health science librarians. Wow - it truly is a community space with a large children's area, a coffee shop, genealogy floor, quiet study rooms, larger conference rooms, play equipment, and maker space that included 3D printers, sewing machines, a long arm quilter, podcast room, and more. Also, there was lots of artwork throughout on the walls, outdoors, and even hanging from the ceiling. The staff areas were well hidden but plenty of staffed information desks throughout. Lots of scheduled activities including puzzle competition, story time for kids, and classes for all ages. Lots of people there just doing their own thing in their own area.
It was odd not to see rows and rows of shelves books due to the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) which is uncommon in public libraries. I have mixed feeling about that - on one hand it's a really cool system but it doesn't allow for browsing easily unless the online catalog is used. However, it allows for more space for people and recreation. They did have many books on display though. I don't see myself visiting a lot since I use the Libby App and pick up holds at my local branch but it's nice to know it's there in case I ever need to reserve a small space with technology or am working on a DIY project. read more
