But then, the novelty wears off and the pain starts to come. Soon, both my under arms and hands were SORE. I really sympathize with those who are on crutches because it really isn't just your foot that can't be used...it's your arms and hands as well. I once tried grabbing a glass of milk while on crutches and it took me a whole 20 minutes from fridge to table. Normally, it would have taken me 1 minute. So, I embarked on an adventure to find a Walking/Knee Scooter. Imagine a stroller, but there is a place where you can rest your knee, and you basically stroll around town. It allows you to be crutch free and the most important thing, it relieves pressure of your hands and underarms. My uncle, who is a doctor in New York, recommended that I rent one. Well, easier said than done because I called about 20 Home Health Care places in Toronto and some said they didn't know what the heck I was talking about, while others knew of the product, but told me it just isn't available here. Then, I came across ActiveLite who carried two products I was interested in. The first product is called the iWalk Free which is a Forrest Gump-like contraption that you buckle to your injured leg. There is a knee pad that you rest your knee and the goal is to be walking...just with a metal pole that acts like a leg. All the places I called didn't have this except ActiveLite. The second product I was interested in was the elusive knee walker/stroller. And again, I scoured the internet for this item in Toronto, and yet again, ActiveLite carried a version of the knee stroller I was interested in. It basically is a mini stroller with a knee pad to one side, and you slowly walk. This simple product has been my companion ever since, and my hands and underarms have no more pain. The service is amazing at ActiveLite. Special thanks to Ricki and Brian who have helped me with choices and have been very accommodating. Both have been very professional and they both know their products. If you are have having difficulties finding unconventional products for injured legs, you should definitely go to ActiveLite. Their website lists a whole range of products that they carry, and yes, they do weekly rentals which is great for short term injuries. Both my iWalk Free and Knee Stroller were rented here. As I finish this review, I am in my 4th week of being in a cast, so two more weeks to go! *For more information on the iWalk Free, here is the website: http://www.iwalk-free.com/

A review for Active Lite Mobility Systems Jan 18, 2014…read more My impression of Active Lite Mobility Systems is Rapid friendly service. Outstanding product. I particular, I want to talk about their little known WalkNRoll product which deserves far more attention than it is currently getting in Canada. WalkNRoll is such a well kept mobility tool secret that no medical professional in my neighbourhood nor any of the residents I encountered had seen one before. My impression of their WalkNRoll product is quality of life enhancing, encouraging greater independence and faster healing than traditional crutches. If you are having lower leg surgery like I did for spiral fractures, plan in advance to leave the hospital with WalkNRoll instead of crutches. With WalkNRoll, unlike crutches, I didn't have to think twice weighing my bladder pressure against pain to underarm, shoulder and neck before making the effort to go to the bathroom to relieve myself. My right knee rested instead on a comfortable padded cushion pre-adjusted at the right height for me, as I rolled along from bedroom to bathroom. On Dec 2, 2013, I had major surgery on my right lower leg. Just prior to surgery I had heard about the WalkNRoll scooter which is manufactured in Quebec being far superior to crutches for my recovery. My insurance company approved the purchase, which I made on-line on Dec 3, 2013. By the afternoon my scooter was delivered. As soon as I experienced the increased freedom of mobility offered by the scooter and significantly decreased stress on my right shoulder and neck, I called the next-door neighbor to take back the crutches she has lent me. my orothopedic surgeon, chiropractor, sports physiotherapist, massage therapist and family physician had never before seen the WalkNRoll in action. Even at my Wheel Trans interview for the GTA, the interviewer asked if she could take a picture of my scooter. It has significantly added to my pro-surgery quality of life. Many people in the fracture clinic, at the shopper's drug mart, and out in public have asked me about it and copied down information so they too could locate a WalkNRoll scooter for themselves or family or friends. I am so thankful my friend in San Diego told me about this mobility tool on Dec 1, 2013 before I went in for surgery and so thankful that Dr. Shiralli prescribed it for me on Dec 2, 2013 and that I could source it here in the GTA. Mobility Lite is located on the north east corner of Leslie Street and John Street in Thornhill. They took my measurements over the phone and sent a representative to my home where they ensured that the device was properly set up for me and that I knew how to use it. Within twenty-four hours I was off exacerbating crutches and rolling on this new mobility device. I have showed this product to the interviewers at TTC's Wheel Trans. New to the device, they now have pictures and have had a demonstration by me on how it works. The device fits in neatly with the passenger requiring no additional space, unlike larger devices, so that passenger can even travel in a regular Wheel Trans vehicle like a car rather than a special vehicle requiring a ramp. This very positive WalkNRoll product and service experience with Active Lite Mobility Systems encourages me to purchase products from them as I need them in the future. I noticed that they have very reasonable prices on a number of Obus Forme products such as cervical pillows and neck pillows for which I have paid about 30% with a competitor. I bought a Shiatsu Massage cushion from Mobility Systems Inc in Thornhill as well. I will definitely do business with Mobility Systems Inc in the future and have sent in two items to my insurance company for predetermination. Mobility Systems has a wide range of dependableproducts to help with post MVA whiplash injury as well. I have recommended their WalkNRoll product and their story to many people I encounter at or on my way to medical appointments in York Region and across the GTA. If anyone in your family is contemplating crutches or is having pain while sitting on the couch to watch TV, check out Active Lite Mobility Systems. The people are honest and serviable. Their products are top quality. If I were still on crutches, I would be in so much pain in the upper body that I would think twice about even getting out of bed to pee. I have used my WalkNRoll probably 300 hours since my surgery. Not only does it assist in walking, I can also rest my leg on it wherever I am sitting and I can even sit on it when there is standing room only. My upper leg is much stronger than it would be if I were still on crutches. I know that because of WalkNRoll crutches, going from non-weight bearing to weight-bearing is an easier task.

Although my intake appointment was over quickly, I did not feel rushed and had the time to communicate a full description of my symptoms, my questions and concerns. He gave me a cortisone shot right there and it seems to be doing the trick. I appreciated that he was willing to give me a cortisone injection right there at my intake visit, because many specialists ask you to make a separate appointment for any treatment. While he observed that these injections may be effective for a while, surgery is definitely in the future. I feel quite confident that I am with the right doctor! So far, the injection that he gave me is helping manage the pain immensely. I will update this review as new events (such as surgery) unfold.

Tip: Dr Goodman is compassionate, funny, and knowledgeable…read more Ever since my mom fell and broke her arm last summer, she has been going to a bunch of different medical appointments. She has had good care to the point where she didn't need physiotherapy for her arm because it healed nicely. Sometimes, you get a special, rare gem of a doctor. It's how I would classify Dr Rusty Goodman, who is a Rheumatologist at the Markham Stouffville Health Centre. It's a separate building from the Markham Stouffville Hospital buildings, but it's a part of the hospital. My mom got a referral to see Dr Goodman through her family doctor. Her appointment was originally scheduled in January. There was a freezing rain-snow system hitting Markham. I made the executive decision to reschedule her appointment. I called and got a voice message that said that it would be checked throughout the day. I was pleasantly surprised that a woman, Angela, called me back. She was compassionate and understanding about weather playing a factor getting my parents and me to this appointment. She was great to reschedule a month later, which was today. Yesterday, I almost missed her reminder call. She was great recording a message. I picked up, as I was cleaning. I confirmed that we'd be there today. I drove my parents to this appointment. There is parking in front of Markham Stouffville Health Centre. The rate is the same as if you were parking where I have parked for hospital visits. However, it works a bit differently. At the health clinic, you pay for parking first and display your ticket on your vehicle's dashboard. For the hospital, you take your ticket with you and then find a kiosk to pay for parking on your way out. There was a parking payment kiosk just outside the door. I got my parents to wait for me inside as I paid. It accepted credit cards and coins. The expiration time was confusing, but I paid the maximum time and displayed the ticket on my dad's vehicle's dashboard. My dad isn't the best at directions. It's one reason why I accompany them for medical appointment. I hadn't been to this building in over a decade. Yet, finding suite 403 was easy. This floor had washrooms in the middle. There are two elevators that are spacious to accommodate wheelchairs. The fourth floor is the top floor. Angela is the nicest person. She helped get my mom registered with her health card and a list of medications. She scanned the latter. Perfect! We got to our 1 pm appointment at 12:40 pm. Dr Goodman saw us early, which was nice. Speaking with Dr Goodman puts you at ease. He makes you feel comfortable and has a fun sense of humour. He is also extremely knowledgeable. He gathered a lot of information about my mom. Since my mom broke her arm, she's at a high risk with fractures. We are waiting for a bone density scan, which he eased our minds by saying that it's an x-ray and it's painless. He also wanted to get blood work from her. I said that she got one done last Thursday. He was able to pull the results up and look at what was tested versus what he wanted tested. He was thoughtful to reduce the number of tubes of blood that my mom needed to do. He also recommended that my mom get a drug by injection to treat osteoporosis. It would be injected twice a year. He will wait for the blood results and the bone density scan before faxing (yes, it's common in the health realm, unlike my IT realm) a prescription for this drug to my mom's pharmacist. We also talked about getting calcium and vitamin D incorporated in my mom's diet. She eats yogurt daily, so the calcium is good. We talked about vitamin D. I liked that he shared how he and his wife enjoy riding bikes in the summertime. She is great applying sunblock. However, the sunblock does an effective job blocking out vitamin D absorption that human are generally deficient in this vitamin these days. Fascinating! I love learning and the personal example that he gave out. There's a humanness about him that I appreciate. He's a great doctor and a nice man to talk to. He's great eliminating medical jargon that can be difficult to comprehend, especially to my parents. He had a few degrees on the wall. One of them was from McGill University. It was entirely in Latin. It was fascinating to me. My undergraduate one is in both English and French. My master's is in English only. If you ever get a referral to see Dr Goodman, you are in terrific care. (68)

Sadly, there are many care companies that do not match the skill-set of the PSW to the needs of the…read moreclient which can endanger the clients' life and well-being -- thankfully, this is not one of them! Thank you so much for sending just the right PSW to do my booking -- namely, Jade. I'm a complex-care client with an illness with many "rules". I don't manage sensory input well, often need silence, am sometimes in a non-responsive state, and sometimes cannot speak or see. She understood that "silence" comes in many forms, with not speaking being only a part of it. She didn't wave frantically in front of my face repeatedly, or do anything else inappropriate to my care, which needs to be low-key and efficient. Jade started in the middle of a severe relapse where I couldn't make eye contact or speak. Most PSWs cannot work with this situation at all, but Jade could. She was calm, and confident, and quietly got the job done following written directives without making me more ill. Jade particularly excels at reading my cues and gestures. She has a great attitude and is a friendly, pleasant and unintrusive person to share my home with. When I began to be able to speak a tiny bit, she understood my directives and could complete them without ever asking me to repeat them (which I'm too weak to do, and become neurologically overstimulated if I try). Jade is firmly in the top 15th percentile of PSWs, which is the type of PSW I have a medical need for. Again, many thanks to LaMae for suggesting and procuring Jade, and to the whole team for your support. You've got yourself a new client!
