I literally heard one of the ladies talking about me to another employee. As I stared at her in disbelief, she stared right back at me, and continued to talk about me (Using my name and everything). I'm regretful I didn't say something or at the least refuse my order and leave. Right down the street from this shop is another, called Quilter's Station. They have a better selection, and much better prices. Not the mention the staff and owner are really nice and welcoming!

This place is uber filled. the amount of fabric is huge. There is a classroom in the back, where they have displayed some of their quilts. They have a full selection of scissors, and patterns, and batting. This is one of the larger quilt shops I've ever been in. The staff members were very friendly, assisted us with a quick and easy checkout.

Schaake's covers you for all of the above, just outside of Lawrence. Some other area pumpkin patches and farms offer pumpkin "picking" by simply setting up a ton of pumpkins for you to pick from a pile which is essentially the same as a grocery store. Schaake's is great because you can actually traipse through the fields, step over the vines and pluck your own pumpkins straight from the farm. In non-Covid times, they have a tractor ride to take you out and it'll pick you up so you don't have to haul them back. Covid times, they've added wheelbarrows up front so you can haul them easily. There are other little fun things here like a pumpkin slingshot, a chicken coop, concessions with cider & kettle corn, hay bale maze, cows, and an old school playground area. If you like the peaceful openness of rural Kansas, this farm will certainly deliver on that, even though it's very close to Lawrence. If it's one of those perfect weekends in October, know that it's going to be very busy, but it's always fun no matter how packed it gets. It's worth the trip over from KC as well as we haven't found a better pumpkin patch anywhere around.

Well - now I know just how simple it is to do what these girls have done. Beadazzler Beads - and for yours and mine own sanity, let's just call it BB - is an affordable bead shop where you can experiment. To get the full range of what you can do here, let me just list it: 1. Buy beads and string and clasp and do the handiwork yourself to create your own necklace for anywhere from $20 to $50. 2. Pick out everything you want and have them put together the necklace. You still get the credit for the design, and they do all the work - everyone wins! 3. Bring in a photograph or a necklace and ask them to remake it - and they do. If they don't have the beads you need or something that looks identical to what it is, they will go out and find it, for no additional fee. Incredible artistic freedom has never been so cushy, you know? Girls have it so easy now - they can make their own string of pearls or their own funky bead necklace - it's really anything you want at your fingertips. I even found some silver Pandora lookalike beads for $6.00 a pop (they usually go for like $30 a pop). You can trick a lot of people - I'm telling you (for those of you who don't know, Pandora jewelry is like the it-bracelet of the year. Oprah sells it in her magazine if that explains anything. It's just a silver bracelet that you buy these silver beads for and they're very expensive). The guy in the back gave me a personal tour of the place - what a nice guy! He stopped what he was doing to explain the setup and I got the feeling he would go above and beyond to try and make a customer happy, you know? He told me that the necklaces in the glass case by the register are made by the shopkeeper but that everything else was up for redesign. The store has pre-stranded necklaces you can purchase and then use that as a base or leave it as it is. They also offer a wide range of clasps from $2.50 to $50 - it's really up to you (I'd shoot for $2.50). The coolest thing about this place to me is just the liberty it gives its clients. They're like, "GO AT IT!" It's nice to be creative and free when so many stores try to control this and that so much so that you feel like you're at the employee's mercy - which is no way to feel.

Flash forward and Hammerpress has migrated from their OG location to further down SW BLVD, and now to this new spot in the heart of the West Bottoms. It had been a while since I visited so I wasn't sure where they had moved to, but it seems fitting that they'd end up in the West Bottoms as many of the artists that once had studios in the Crossroads have migrated that direction as well, and it seems true to both their craft as printers, and their vibe as artists to be in yet another cool, up and coming, hip neighborhood. All of this being said, this new spot is by far their coolest. From the arched entryway, to the bright interior, you're going to find everything you've come to expect from Hammerpress. Beautiful art prints? Check! Locally made greeting cards? Check! other stationary and art goodies? check and check! Next time you need a card go check them out - you won't regret it!
