I'm sharing my experience because I think other patients, especially anyone with dental anxiety,…read moreshould know what my experience was like. I initially went in for an emergency exam because I was in pain. During that appointment, we discussed my options and decided that I would have two teeth removed because I could not afford a root canal and crown on the large molar. At first, I was told the extraction appointment would be about a month out. I questioned that because it would mean being in pain for another month. Then, suddenly, an opening became available for the following Tuesday. I thought that was a little odd, but I was relieved that I wouldn't have to wait a month while in pain. When Tuesday came, I arrived mentally prepared to have both teeth extracted because that was the treatment plan we had discussed and agreed upon. However, on the day of the procedure, the dentist changed the plan because she felt I might not be "mentally prepared" to have both teeth removed. She recommended that I consider a root canal and crown on the larger molar instead and proceeded with only one extraction. I understand that a dentist may change a recommendation based on their professional judgment, and I can respect that. My issue is that this should have been thoroughly discussed with me at my exam, when we were deciding on the treatment plan--not when I arrived prepared for two extractions. The tooth that was not removed had lost a filling and was causing me significant pain. I left feeling like the pain I was experiencing from that tooth wasn't being taken seriously. What made the experience particularly difficult was how I was treated before and during the extraction. The dentist came across to me as extremely cold and unfriendly. She didn't greet me, barely communicated with me, and didn't explain what she was doing during the procedure. She also seemed bothered when I had questions. I don't even remember her saying goodbye after the extraction. I've had dental work before, and I've never experienced a dentist who communicated so little with me. For someone with dental anxiety, this made an already stressful situation much worse. I don't expect anyone to hold my hand through an appointment, but I do expect basic communication, kindness, and an explanation of what is happening to me. Asking questions about my own dental care should not be a problem. Immediately after my extraction, I was also given paperwork regarding Halcion, a sedative, for a future appointment. I was told it would cost $50 and was asked to sign paperwork committing to taking it. I was left with the understanding that the dentist would not treat me at the next appointment unless I took the sedative. That made me extremely uncomfortable. I don't want to take Halcion, and I don't believe wanting to ask questions or having dental anxiety should automatically mean that sedation is the right choice for me. I want to be able to discuss my treatment and make decisions about what medications I am comfortable taking. There were communication problems outside of the procedure as well. My antibiotic prescription was supposed to be sent to the pharmacy, but it wasn't sent before the weekend. Because of that oversight, I spent the weekend still dealing with significant dental pain before the prescription issue could be addressed. Overall, I left feeling like no one was on the same page and, more importantly, like I wasn't being heard as a patient. What I needed was a dentist who would communicate with me, explain my options, answer my questions, and understand that communication actually helps me manage my anxiety. Instead, this experience made me more anxious about receiving dental care. I will be finding another dentist.
