As the name of the shop says, this is an old fashioned barber shop. The barbar chairs, I was told, date to the late 1920s. But this is not the main reason you have your hair cut. The service and the quality of the work was excellent. My barber was Eric, and he took care to give me a fine haircut. I also want to praise their efficient internet reservation system. Finally the combination of the price and quality of the hair cut cannot be beat. read more

Man.. I have to give it up for Old Tyme Barbers! I had tickets for Daryl Hall at Radio City. I figured, lemme have a cut out day and just chill. Shoe Shine, Hot Towel shave and dinner before going to Radio City sounds about right for this gentleman. I made an appointment on line with Fred. (My father in laws name) Walking from Grand Central to the barber shop was easy peasy! Once inside, they are playing the weirdest music. I mean, I'm old and not looking for Sinatra but this was music from a slasher film! Haha Fred introduces himself and gets the shave party started. Now I must point out, it's 90+ degrees outside. Some people might find this relaxing but Fred covered my entire head with a hot towel. I had to correct the situation and not have my breathing obstructed. Once I gave Fred new marching orders, it was all business. I asked Fred to also clean up the back of my neck. He did such a fantastic job, he even gave me a mini trim around my ears. I said Fred, you're a miracle worker, now make me younger! He laughed at the joke. The end result, I'm looking pretty slick! Guys, you need this for yourself! Take some time, get a hot towel shave and just enjoy some peace for one hour. And ask for Fred, he is a great barber! read more

Highly recommended. Roman made an awesome haircut. Great value too. Friendly staff. No wait. A 100 years old barber shop.

Great haircuts provided by friendly, professional barbers in a most convenient location.

Responding to Anne M: There was no miscommunication, there was only a deliberate disregard of request/instruction. And...the political aspect as you call it is the key to the hostility this person demonstrated. You can deny it or you can address it. read more

Freddy is the best barber I've ever had .. he's always welcoming , happy and caring about my hairs ... Jedi power

Really good quick haircut. First time here. Went on a whim bc its next to my office. Fred was super nice and worked quick and efficient. Nothing wild or exciting about my usual cut but he nailed it first time out. Recommend. read more

A one stop man shop. Cut, shave, and shoe shine all available. Some barber shops just have the "it" factor when you step in the door, and OTB definitely has "it." They will spend up to an hour perfecting your hair with painstaking attention to detail. Fred worked with me to achieve the look I wanted within two or three cuts. I've now been a client of his for about half a year. I particularly appreciate the effort he puts into each cut as well as trying out and recommending new products. If you work or live nearby, this place is a no-brainer. read more

I had an appointment today at 8 AM for a cut and shave (60 minute procedure). The train was having signal problems, so I ended up being 20 minutes late. I had an appointment with Tori, and he told me that since I was late, he could not see me. All I really needed was a beard trim (a 30 minute procedure), so I asked just for that. He literally said, "you don't want me doing that, I just cut myself today." And told me he had later appointments, so he didn't want to rush the 30 minute procedure into a 40 minute window. Mind you, he was literally sitting in a chair, reading. I checked online, and, wouldn't you know, he had a 9AM available to be booked. So, either he just can't do beards, he lied about being busy, or both. Just not going back anymore. With the many barber shops around, I wouldn't risk going here if you have something important that day. read more

Would not recommend this place, my last haircut here felt very rushed - which indeed, it was. One side of my fade was completely longer and uneven from the other side. One side was trimmed out way too thin. Somehow a piece of the hair from the top of my hair that is longer also got cut to the length of the sides, and now sticks out because it doesn't lay properly in either direction. All in all, you've been warned! read more

So what makes a good barber? Attention to detail..What makes a great barber? Attention to detail on a consistent basis. This is what Noel illustrates! His service is inspiring. He is professional, thorough, energetic, personable and above all you can feel his passion for his work with every hair trimmed or beard touched with the blade. In the beginning I actually had a conflict with Noel (I was consistently late to my appt and he called me on it haha) so after I came out of my feelings I humbled myself cause I never met a barber as dope as he is and knew I wouldn't find another. All facts no lies. None the less I'm glad he is a man of integrity and agreed to still work with me. I make sure to be on time because I know he won't disappoint and he strives for excellence everytime! Good looking out Noel! - Marcus aka MJ read more

was fortunate to get Noel as my barber. Noel is an artist when it comes to fades, and my hair is not easy to cut. I often get compliments and some want to know where I go. So if you want a fade that gets noticed, go to Olde Tyme Barbers and tell Noel that Jayson sent you. You won't regret it. read more

James has cut my hair a few times and trimmed my beautiful luscious beard and I must say, he's an artist! He's extremely professional and also personable! But most importantly, I leave with a great hair cut and beard trim each time. The place has a great old school barbar vibe and being located so close to GC makes it really convenient. If you're looking for a real deal barber, I highly recommend OTB, especially James! read more

I've been to Old Tyme Barbers several times. I've only had my hair cut by Szilvia and she is awesome. I like my hair short on the sides and tapered in the back and she does it perfectly every time. She always finishes by shaving my neck with a blade and lining me up. She uses a combo of scissors and clippers and does a great job. I highly recommend her and all the barbers in the place are cool and fun to talk to. read more

Been looking for my spot since I moved to NYC and now I have found it in Olde Tyme Barbers and Mike Wood, who is a gem. If you want a $70 John Alan set up - this isnt your place. If you want a cheap and nasty job, again this isnt it. It is the middle, which suits me perfectly. You will get speedy, but not nasty service, people who will listen to what you want and tell you about your hair, an expert in what he does. Great guy as well, great bedside manner! Also walked in at 11am on a Thursday and got something straight away. I found my spot and I'll be going back. read more

Arrived at 7:35pm and was told they were closed. My haircut would not have taken more than 15/20 mins. Yelp needs to update the hours of operation for this place. Terrible attitude of the barbers. read more

Came in on a Friday afternoon feeling a bit skeptical about this shop, but was I in for a surprise! Joe gave me a warm welcome made me feel welcome with all his humor & jokes, he even put on a song for me on the radio that corresponed to my name ("Eli is coming by Three Dog Night") told me that the song should be my entrance tune when I visit clients, LOL! Haircut was exactly as I had expected, price was very good as well. Overall highly recomended - Joe an excellent barber with a very happy atitude, the place has a very joyful atmosphere - you will not feel awkward at all! read more

Michael is a great barber with a real positive attitude. I feel like he's listening to what I want in a haircut, and giving excellent suggestions that only improve things. Very comfortable, and I never feel rushed. read more

My barber was out on vacation so I decided to give this place a shot. What a great place, can't say enough about Noel, great barber. He doesn't rush at all, super detailed in cutting and very cool to talk to. I made an appointment early in the morning, came in during lunch was out within 40 mins. All the other barbers seemed laid back. Great atmosphere will definitely be back for another haircut. Just an FYI it's a little pricier than the outer boroughs, but worth it. read more

Health is wealth. A good haircut is life. Check out Noel to get set straight. Compliments to the chef!

I came in during my lunch break today for a fade (1st time customer) and having read customer reviews of Noel, I booked an appointment through the website (Definitely recommend booking an appointment ahead of time, the process was very easy). The shop was busy at around 12PM but Noel was able to get me seated right away. Took time to really understand the look I was going for and was extremely personable and attentive. I will definitely be returning - prices are fair, service great and haircut was awesome. read more

Five stars for Fred and Matthew. I would follow either of them anywhere. However, Matthew is leaving next month to open his own shop, and Fred has been on a break, and honestly I give zero stars to the shop owner. Seems he's the one who wrote a message on their chalkboard yesterday along the lines of: "We are neutral on Bill Cosby, and opinionated on everything else." I don't really understand what is supposed to be clever or funny about tolerating sexual assault. The owner isn't always there, but when he has been I've heard him make misogynist and transphobic comments, so this chalkboard was no surprise. An old school barbershop can still be super charming without the old school bigotry. Thanks Matthew for the awesome haircuts, I'll be seeing you soon in Brooklyn! Peace out, Olde Tyme Barbers! EDITED 12/19 TO ADD: The owner contacted me within a day of this review going up. His apology was humble and sincere, and makes a big difference. Nice to see them doing do good business along with their good haircuts. read more

This is a great no-frills, but exceptional service barber shop. Fred (@jedimasterbarber) is awesome! For about $30 (which is a great value considering the crap job most barbers/stylists do in manhattan for that price) I got the best cut I've had in years and Fred even took a straight razor to my neck. This place feels like the barber shop my dad used to take me to as a kid; no pretention, just friendly guys taking care of business. I will be spending 20 minutes on the train to get here every month cause they are just that good. **update for after my second visit...just as great as last time... read more

I've gotten my haircut here 3 times. The first two times were great, I'm not sure what the guys name is, but he's the hipster guy with tattoos. My experience with him with excellent. I just got my hair cut by "the boss". This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Not only was he a smartass about everything, (I'm usually okay with the joking smart ass comments, but these were just annoying), but he literally spent a little under 10 minutes cutting my hair. I told him I didn't want my beard touched, but I asked him to touch my sideburns with the razor, (which every single barber I've been to does for no extra charge), he refused. When I get a haircut, I want to leave the barber looking sharp. Just because I'm not getting my beard touched doesn't mean my sideburns should look shitty. I will not be returning to "the boss" again. I feel like I just wasted $30 on the most unpleasant, half ass haircut read more

I paid a walk-in visit to Olde Tyme Barbers today to get a shave during my lunch break. Fred took care of me, as chance would have it, and all the luckier for me. He started off by whipping my neckline into shape--then he began his ritual. I call it that because what Fred pulled off was nothing short of magic. Within the span of half an hour, he prepared my face with a ready stock of oils and unguents, laid hot towels on it, and gave me a good once over with a straight razor, all while carrying on easy conversation. Afterward, he rubbed on more salves and applied both hot and cold towels. The final result was that my face, which had never before known the touch of a straight razor, left with a decent shave and little irritation (all with plenty of time left on my break!). I consider that a ringing success, especially given how rough my results can be at home. I would recommend this place, and especially Fred, to any man who needs grooming near Grand Central. read more

Fred did an awesome job today: cut, shave, shampoo. Quick, super-detailed, top quality. And all that for a very reasonable price. I love the old feel of the place - it is real and everyone who works there prides themselves in their job. read more

Judging by the mostly positive reviews on here, making an appointment is important if you want a good experience. I was a walk-in on Monday after work, at around 5:20, and felt like I was a rushed job. I'd read on their website that during your first visit here, they like to have a consultation with you, to properly discuss what you want. Maybe because they were busy, they didn't have the time for this with me? I was in and out in 15 minutes, and got a very average haircut, for an above average price. $33 plus tip, and the cut and experience felt the same as any $15 rushed place I'd usually go to. read more

This is a great place to get a haircut! Make sure you ask for Rudy- he is the best of the best!! He genuinely enjoys what he's doing and is always good for conversation. Nice enough somewhat upscale barbershop. Several barber chairs, but since I was there on a Saturday, only one barber - Fred - was working. He did an excellent job (need to wait a few days to confirm) and had a few old school flourishes. They try to pamper you a bit with hot towels, etc. But the shop is not cheap - a buzz cut was $25 and it goes up from there. I will go back, the extras are worth the few bucks more. Just a block from Grand Central. read more

I got my haircut by James Bello at Olde Tyme Barbers and it was one of the best experiences I've had at a barbershop. The customer service was out of this world. James is one of those barbers that actually listens to your requests and knew exactly how I wanted my haircut. The environment was everything you look for, friendly, great conversation, and very clean. I loved the fact that James took his time and I never felt like he was rushing. Most barbers you can tell they're just looking to get you out of there as fast as possible and move on to the next customer but not at this shop. Very happy I found this place. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the prices are good, and I consistently get a very good haircut.

My regular barber at home has been out with a medical issue for a while, was going to the city and needed a haircut - read good reviews and heard good things about Mike - they were all true. Made an appointment, he was right on time and did a great job. Paid attention to all the little details and the price was very reasonable. If I ever need to to get another haircut in the city would definitely see him again and recommend anyone in need of a quality cut to see him. read more
