This review is specifically about OLDE LINE TATTOO WEST located at 405 N Highway 101 in Solana Beach, California. The shop recently opened and is just blocks from the beach. The atmosphere is calm, relaxing, and inviting. The owners, Dave and Kim Kruseman are amazing human beings. There are four artists there presently (IG: DaveKruseman, ChristinaTattooer, BenRoundsTattoo, and 1JohnHargis); no piercer presently. They're open 7 days a week 11am-8pm and can be contacted at (858) 925-7087 or through the shop IG (oldelinetattoo) or online at oldeline.com. Dave is my dedicated tattoo artist because... I trust him to literally tattoo anything on me. Case in point, I've had two tattoos not knowing what I'd be getting until the day of AND I have another appointment scheduled where I won't even know what I got until after it's done (I plan on not looking). In the shop they have a sign that reads "Enter a stranger; leave a friend." This is ABSOLUTELY 100% Dave and Kim's LIFESTYLE. This is not some gimmicky statement. It pains me to write this review based on my most recent interaction. I have been pleased with the 4 tattoos and 3 piercings I had done at their shop. This 1 star review comes from a request to finish coloring a tattoo that was started. I was told the following... ". I spoke to the artist and unfortunately because of the scheduling conflicts with your last two appointments and it has been 2 years since we have seen you, he is not comfortable tattooing you. He is really committed to clients who can finish projects without these long gaps. We understand life is not perfect, and tattoos don't always come first. I am sure there is a valid reason on your end as to why you could not finish it within a reasonable amount of time but we have to protect his schedule and livelihood." So now here is the story. The tattoo was started and we scheduled a follow up to finish the color. When I came back to finish it, the artist told me it still needed to heal more before he would work on it. I completely understood and we agreed to do a different tattoo since I was already in the chair. That ink turned out great! I scheduled the color work and before the appointment I called in to inform them I tested positive for Covid 19 and couldn't attend. No problem just give us a call when you can come in. I scheduled an appointment and they contacted me 1 day before the appointment to inform me the artist may have been exposed to Covid 19 and couldn't work till he got the green light. Since I went through the same thing previous, I understood and figured we will get it done when everything cools off. I needed sometime to handle a health issue before I could return for the final work. I reached out to schedule this May and got this back a denial of service email. They could have handled this in a much more professional way. It comes off as I can't get work done at their shop anymore. So me and my family spend a couple grand with them and they tell me "We hope you understand. Good luck to you in all your future endeavors." If they wanted to make sure the artist made his money, maybe request the appointment be prepaid. I think this was very unprofessional. I have always recommended them to people ask me where did you get that done. Unfortunately I can't feel comfortable do that anymore. I hope you understand. Review of the Hagerstown, Maryland location. I have gotten 4 piercings from Mike and he is a really nice guy. I recommend saving the initial jewelry you choose for the piercing, because the price of those can add up very quickly. I got a tattoo from Lorena, who is also very nice. I'm giving a one star review due to a horrible experience my friend had. Any artist that gets seemingly annoyed or irritated because of a clients concern for distasteful, racist flash is unacceptable. An artist's job is to not only provide a hygienic environment and high quality work, but to make the client comfortable. Trust between a client and the artist is extremely important, and trust comes in many forms. This shop has failed some of the most important standards. The confederate flag is not "JUST ART" as the artist so rudely put it. It's a symbol of hate. Imagine an artist being so crass while putting permanent art on your body, I would be extremely uncomfortable. After hearing about the experience my friend had, I will not be visiting this shop and will tell others the same. read more

If I could give more then five stars, I absolutely would. This is the place to go in the whole eastern coast to go. Normally they say you get what you pay for, well yes that's true but with this gallery it's more then just that. The front of the house is outstandingly friendly, any questions, concerns, etc. are address respectfully and honestly. The overall cleanliness is far beyond expectations and after getting my first tattoo there and observing their cleaning procedures; everything is done to a T. My artist was Kike, so I am inclined to say he is the best artist, however I looked at all of their portfolios and all of them make amazing work. It was a big mistake going here for a piercing. I recently went in with my girlfriend to watch her get a nose piercing and the piercer named Mike (I found out later his name is Mike Gentay) was very unprofessional. He talked non-stop complaining about other piercing shops and piercers in the area because my gf had previous piercings from other places. We rolled our eyes at the stupid and rude things he kept saying and we kept trying to change the subject and focus on the reason why we were there which was just to get a simple nose piercing done, but the guy would not shut up. He seems to think he is the greatest piercer in the world when he just comes across as a total jerk who criticizes everyone else and he even tried to make my gf feel bad for having gotten piercings at other places before. He made us very uncomfortable and he ruined what should have been a fun experience. The piercing he did seems adequate but it was really simple in my opinion, but I can promise you that neither my gf or I will ever go back to this shop again as long as Mike is working there. He's a know it all a-hole who talks down to customers and has something negative to say about every other piercer in the area. read more

Such a great parlor! I got my septum pierced here by Jake and it could not have been a more pleasant experience! I came in yesterday just to check to pricing and jewelry and the man at the front desk was so nice and helpful. He explained exactly what the process would be and how much everything would cost in a way that made me feel comfortable and excited about my piercing. I came back today and Jake did the actual piercing. He was so nice and made me feel totally comfortable. He explained everything in great detail and really made me feel relaxed about the fact that I was getting a needle shoved through my nose. Once he had marked everything out I laid down on the table and he explained every step, had me take a deep breath, and then BAM! Piercing done! He definitely got the "sweet spot" and I hardly felt any pain. Jake explained his reasoning behind every step and in the end I am so so pleased. I cannot speak for the tattoo side of Olde Line, but Victor, the head piercer, is absolutely AMAZING! I went on Sunday for my first non-"traditional" piercing after being sent his way via a phone scavenger hunt. I was looking for an experienced piercer to do a triangle and the place I'd chosen in DC (which is more of my metro area) based on reputation and Yelp reviews was not able to do it due to lack of experience with this difficult piercing... The head piercer there told me to call the head piercer at another place in Fairfax, VA. This guy could've done it, but he was moving and it was his last day and too late to fit me in... At his urging I called Victor at Olde Line. I'll be quick to admit that my initial reaction to his recommendation, was "I live near DC and you want me to go to Hagerstown for a difficult piercing?!?!" I don't care so much about the drive, but I lived in Hagerstown for several years and to be honest, of my five tattoos, not one was done there and that was by choice. The fact that this place is in the mall weirded me out even more... but as he'd been so highly recommended and I found great reviews on the studio, I decided to call. I talked to Victor on the phone Saturday evening and we spoke about what I wanted as well as his experience performing it and potential problems. Victor was very honest that he'd only done 8 triangles and would only do it if he was 110% comfortable with my anatomy (if you know what a triangle is, you know what I'm saying LOL). We agreed that I'd come on Sunday to be evaluated and get my other piercing (I was getting a Monroe as well) and if my anatomy permitted and he felt comfortable, he'd do my triangle - if not, he'd do a VCH. He then quoted me prices which were awesome compared to the places I'd already checked. On Sunday, I showed up as planned... Victor evaluated me first to make sure I was suited for what I wanted and told me that even though I was, my nerve was so close that he didn't feel comfortable and would give me the info for another piercer who could definitely do it. I decided to go ahead and have the VCH done and the planned Monroe. Victor really took the time to make sure that I understood the procedure, the healing, and care. I didn't feel rushed or like a bother. I was super nervous about the VCH but he really did an INCREDIBLE job... I'd be lying to say it didn't hurt at all, but the pain was nowhere near the level I'd anticipated. I've had waxes worse than this. When he knew that I was "recovered" from the first piercing, he did the Monroe. He let me rest for a few minutes to ensure that I wasn't dizzy or shaky and then allowed me to get dressed and reiterated care instructions. He ensured that I knew when to come back to get the post changed on the Monroe (they use a longer one to account for any swelling and then change it when swelling has passed). He also gave me his cell number so that I could call or text with any questions that came up... I'm so glad he did this because the next day, I had questions that I hadn't thought to ask or had forgotten the answers to. Yesterday I sent him a text asking my questions and again he was more than patient and answered everything that I needed to know. The Monroe has only swollen slightly and looks perfect. Healing pain has been minimal and total bleeding from both piercings has been less than the tip of a q-tip. It's only been two days and I have no problems smiling, eating, sleeping, crossing my legs, or wearing fitted pants. Both of my piercings appear to be perfectly placed and the Monroe was so nicely done that not only have I received many compliments on it, I'm confident that it will not be a problem in my ultra-conservative, suit and heels work environment. Any other work that I need, I'll be taking the trek to Hagerstown and I'm sending all of my friends there. read more

I've yet to get a tattoo done here, but you can bet I definitely plan to. I have, however, gotten several piercings done here, including my septum piercing which scared me the most of all the ones I've gotten. But even with a childhood injury that I thought would hinder my ability to get one, the process was smooth and I was made to feel like they cared about me as a person. I was very impressed with how professional the shop was. I did not feel rushed or neglected as some shops can make you feel. The gentleman handling the jewelry was very patient with the whole process and decided I only needed a new ball to be put on my existing jewelry but I was treated like I could have been a big ticket order. Bought a piercing on black Friday. Was not aware they were giving buy one get one free. Called the next day and told them i didnt get the deal they were offering. The 3 people i talked to the lady behind the counter, the man who filled out the paper and even the piericing expert (haaaa) not a one of them told me the deal. When i called they refused to honor the deal even though i paid on the day they offered it, and told me they would give 20% off. The shop and front staff was very nice. However, I was disappointed with my experience when I went in for my 2nd consult. After having provide numerous guidance and several references on the tattoo I wanted done during the first consult and between the 2nd, the concept drawing was not true to the character nor have followed the guidance I had provided. I had requested Dave for his great work but I felt he treated my body as a canvas for him than care about what I will live with for the rest of my life. During the 2nd consult, he got really short and complained how long it took him to draw up the concept and didn't remember much of what we had discussed or what I had provided. I just felt at that moment he was not the right artist as he cared more for what he wanted than staying true to the meaning of the tattoo and inserted random suggestion and pieces that degrade the integrity. Overall the shop is very nice but after a month of excitement and high hopes it ended in disappointment and back to square one. read more

had an appointment scheduled a week ago at a great shop in frederick. i had went about 4 hours early just to go shopping and do some other things while i waited for my appointment @ 3. at 215 from the frederick shop i received a call stating they had to reschedule. to reschedule it would be a week to two weeks. was very upset. so i started looking online to get my tattoo done yesterday as planned. i had called many shops to be told, " come in and lets see what you want and we can go from there and schedule an appointment ". not the answer i was really looking for. i then started looking out west for shops after searching the area about 40 miles out. so i found olde line and spoke to the gentleman who ran the phone. very polite and outgoing to find out they had an appointment available for a walk in and was interested to see what i wanted and was happy to do the tattoo. i had never been here before and as an artist i wanted to see whos shop this was and how good they really were finding out and reading online that the owner was on inkmasters. as soon as i walked into the store and spoke with my artist, i knew this was the place for me to get tattooed. 30 minutes after drawing the artist comes out and says, " this is what i made for you". it was perfect to what i wanted and i told him he hit the nail in the coffin and killed it. thanks olde line. i will be a new customer that will be back. tattoo was amazing and atmosphere felt like we knew each other for years. and thanks especially to my artist craig brock. you are one hell of an artist. read more

After being told by several tattoo studios that they would not do a tattoo on my finger I was feeling very discouraged. I was told by a mother waiting for her son to try Olde Line in Hagerstown. I called and spoke with Kim about my idea and she was very supportive but clear about what I was asking for. She talked with me about why I wanted this, my age (26), and the difficulties of a finger tattoo. They were very friendly and never made feel that my tattoo was a bad idea. The artist was very easy to talk with and patient as I asked for minor adjustments to my tattoo before starting. Got my tattoo done by Dave. Everyone in this place is great to work with. Had so much fun and was so happy to have a good experience here. Went to Temple Art in downtown Hagerstown and the customer service was terrible. But in a way I should thank them or being so terrible because otherwise I would have never tried out this place. If you want something done definitely come here, they will work with you to create the best body art possible and if you want a piercing they are great with that also. I recently was given a $100 gift certificate for Old Line Tattoo. I was really excited and immediately went there to schedule an appointment. I spoke with Kim, one of the owners. I explained the concept I wanted and she assured me it would be no problem. I would be able to get the design I wanted, but it may cost be just a little more than the original $100. I agreed to send in a rough copy of my idea for the artist to review and then send me back feedback. After a few days I had a change of mind about my design, so I sent in a different idea. I was told the picture I sent would have to be enlarged to a 5x9 area to ensure the details came through. I showed several friends online, one who owns a shop in New York, and was told that there should be no problem doing it in a slightly larger size, but that 5x9 was outrageous and seemed to be an attempt at increasing the price. Their opinion was either the artist wasn't good enough to do such detail, or the wanted to jack up the price and charge by the size as opposed to what the client wanted. I decided to go with a much smaller and simpler idea. One was a simple character drawn in black about 2x3. I was told it would be $500 the way it was shown to them and that they would again have to enlarge to 4x6 or larger. After that every single picture I sent was deemed too small and in need of enlargement to ungodly sizes. Being a smaller person I didn't want a single enormous tattoo. After consulting with two owners of tattoo shops in different states, I was told that they were using a sort of bait and switch. They allow you to think you can get what you want, get you in the chair, then tell you it must be different in a way that will cost you significantly more. I finally decided I didn't want to get my tattoo there after all the back and forth and the condescending snarky e-mails I was receiving, so I sent my boyfriend in for a refund. He was given the gift certificate back as payment at which time he asked the girl where she thought he could spend it. He then had to explain, rather loudly that he wanted his money back, not a worthless gift certificate. It took time, but they finally gave him the money back....minus $10.00 they felt they were entitled to for performing no service. read more
