My middle dtr did not thrive here because she didn't want like school as much and didn't want to go to university. She went on to trade school. She is going well also. In the end, to each their own. They are liberal arts catholic school. Lots of extra circular but the sports teams are not state ranked and if that is a concern go elsewhere. It wasn't for us. The school is surprisingly liberal for a Catholic school. They focus a lot on things like social justice and community service. Kids wore their Obama buttons to class and worked for progressive candidates. It is not a bad place. Don't listen to some Atlanta wobbly-puss who flunked out in the 7th grade and has carried a chip on her shoulder all the way to some grad school. She made out with some teacher's daughter? Are you kidding me? The Elms isn't the typical Catholic school just because somebody gave her a bad grade 15 years ago.

Hathaway Brown School for girls is a very well educated, sustained, and finical school. Except when…read moreit comes to lunch seats. My daughter is an 8th grader this year at Hathaway Brown middle school and she has been telling me how at lunch her and her eight friends want to sit together. So they have been sitting at two connected tables that equal eight seats for each girl (apparently this table has always been like this). But suddenly they've been noticing that the other half of there table keeps getting moved to be apart of another half table, so they keep having to move the other half table back and forth every lunch day just so they can sit together. (They can't switch to another table because all of them are taken up by different grades/people). So one day my daughters friend is moving the other half of the table like usual and then out of no where apparently a teacher comes screaming at her to not move the table and that nobody can move tables anymore. So now there is only room for six girls at the table so they decide to grab two more chairs to squeeze into the table to include there two friends, that is very nice. But the same teacher comes out and starts screaming at the same girl again about how they cannot move chairs at all. Why does it matter so much? My daughter said that the teacher said that it's ok the six girls will sit at a table and the other two will sit at a table alone be cause they need to engage with other kids an snake new friends. I'm sorry but that is excluding two girls from the rest of there friend group and that's also breaking apart a strong friendship with the girls. It's the 8th grade everybody has there groups by now and they know who they like and don't like, and if they don't have that then there is definitely something wrong with your kid. Hathaway Brown School is a good school but they are just so weird about the whole friend thing, don't send your kids here if you don't like this.

If you have a bright child who needs motivation, it's probably OK. But if you have an average child who is a hard worker or, heaven forbid, and under-performing child, this will be an extremely stressful environment for your her. My daughter has some special challenges to learning which were made extremely clear before we enrolled her. With the cost of the school (close to or exceeding tuition for an undergraduate degree each year) I was genuinely shocked that Hathaway Brown's first solution was to ask us for more money for a private tutor within a month ! If you have a child with additional needs, do not go to the school. I do believe that the teachers genuinely care about the students, other than one of the female math teachers who is basically a bully. Summary statement: if you're the kind of parent who has to ensure your child has every advantage to get into an Ivy League school at any cost, send her to HB. Just realize that the school caters to superstars. And if your daughter is not one of them, she will be made to feel pretty bad about herself and placed under extreme pressure until you unenroll her or comply with paying for multiple extracurricular tutors.

Not only were they forced into the office half of the time and punished for being picked on, they NEVER reprimanded the bully. This is one of the many irritating things this school does. Their justice system is overly messed up, not taking care of a student unless they're popular. Not to mention, my grandchild is qualified for a 504 plan. They did not respect this. They claimed that their grades were enough for them to not qualify for one? What BULLSHIT! They would step on the kids who struggled to boost the other popular students up. The only thing good to come out of that school was the music program. The teachers in that corner of the school are angels compared to the rest. Some might think maybe I'd have something nice to say about the counselors. WRONG. These counselors do not do their jobs at all. My grandchild went to them about issues with friends and they didn't help at all. In fact, they PULLED them into the same room. Resulting in making the problem worse. I don't know what these peoples thought processes are, but it's obviously not a good one. Some of the teachers tend to be racist. My grandchild had a few friends that weren't strictly white, and these teachers would degrade, pick on, and insult these students. This school is just disgusting. The food tends to be awful, the teachers are cruel. The only thing I support in that school are the rare, kind teachers, and the music department.

I took my test, and passed, and recieved my certificate. I was offered a job with Cleveland Clinic up north (I live in Bath/Fairlawn), for overnights for $13/hour. Target, at the same time, was offering $18/hour in my town. I pictured my drive to whatever city their telemetry hub was from where I live, and there was no way I was going to drive to work in the snow, work 8-12 hours, and then drive 45-60 minutes home for $13 per hour, and no union. I got a decent education, but its actually worthless now that AI is taking over everything. The nurse who taught my class was amazing, engaging, and very thourough. I am grateful I was offered a job, but no one can live on the pittance Cleveland Clinic offers when you are a fresh graduate from CVCC. We were all looking for good jobs, and were let down. If Target is paying a higher wage to keep a roof over your head and feed your family, that $5/hour= $200/per week or $800/month. (x40 hours a week), I would try working at Target before I'd pay the gas and accepting the commute to work everyday/night in the snow, CVCC is not transparent about your expected earinings, and it's a HUGE disappointment. My ekg liscence was worth exactly nothing compared to a Medical Assistant, because they already get that as a part of their certificate. I now have something to hang on my wall, but nothing else.

I was regularly pushed down stairs, shoved into lockers, punched, strangled, spat on, and kicked under the desks. My classmates would pull my hair, throw garbage in my face, steal my food and publicly humiliate me on a daily basis. Teachers watched it happen and did nothing. Some teachers even encouraged this behavior. My parents informed the higher ups about what was happening and I was punished for "provoking" the bullies. I watched this abuse happen to other students as well, most of them were targeted because they were on the autism spectrum or physically disabled/disfigured. I am writing this as a warning to parents. For the love of God don't send your kids here.

Our youngest attended there and we were forced to withdraw her because of the favortism played. She was a 4.1 gpa never in trouble and things changed when she went to her counselor due to a bad day and it ended where the counselor said she took pills. Non of which she did and then she had to get evaluated to go back, we abided by that and when we presented the hospital proof that she took nothing, was in sound mind, the prinicipal made up a contract which no one would admit to approving. My daughter refused to sign as they wanted control of her in and out of school. After summer and my daughter wanted to go back and attend senior year...so she signed. A month later an incident happened between her and her BF at 10pm! nowhere near the school...no charges, nothing and the school wanted to expel my daughter but permit the boy to still attend the school, and he is the one who told my daughter to kill herself. In the meantime, we get from her friends that they could no longer speak to her because of being told to by the school, all blocked her out of fear of repercussion. We ended up withdrawing her... The emotional abuse they put our daughter through has caused PTSD. It has shaken my faith, but God has been by our side to see her through and with the help of a caring school she graduated early and is working on her career choice. Things like this does exist and it happened to so many...some schools are just better at hiding their dark secrets.
