Par 5. Hole 3. Leave your hook in the bag for this one.

We decided on this course based on various reviews. Our 3rd year to Hilton Head and we found a course that will be added to our normal rotation. What a hidden gem with good rates and great conditions. You can spend $20 less but won't be happy. This course is a great value and we highly recommend it. We really enjoyed Old South. As others have stated, the last 3 holes on each side are along picturesque marshland and the situation becomes target golf. For holes 7 and 16, take an extra club off the tee to provide a better angle to the green. We hope to get back to improve our scores having now seen the layout. Friendly service in the pro shop as well as the bag drop. Bring an extra sleeve of balls for your first visit.

Old South was a very fun course to play and in decent shape! We arrived 25 minutes before our tee time and was greeted immediately. We then headed over to their driving range which is right between 1 & 10. It's a nice size range and was accompanied by a decent putting green close by. The starter was friendly and got us out on time. The course itself was challenging at times but extremely fun. They have two holes where you have small landing areas over marsh and your second shot is the exact same. The first one is a little too difficult for an average golfer if you're not playing from the front tees. I hit what I believed to be a good drive up the right side but was still 185 out and had to clear the junk in front of the green. That can easily be two drops for most golfers. The second one has an even smaller landing area but the second shot is a much easier 150 or less shot. The greens were in good shape but the tee boxes could use some TLC. Overall, it was a fun round and I'd play the course again!

Great track! Highly recommend! Father and son trip, 10 year old junior golfer. They had a juniors score card for my son and junior tee boxes that are married with ladies tees or in front of ladies tees. Great mix of long and short holes with spectacular views on many holes. Plenty of water and course was in great shape.

Can't say enough good things about this gem of a course. Nice people, fantastic scenery and a great value. I will be back.

While on vacation on HHI had to get some golf in. With 40+ courses it was difficult to select, but settled on the Old South in part to the write up that it is one of the oldest, requires strategy and changing landscape. Overall the course was in really good shape, there were some challenging holes over protected reserves and marshlands, tree lined holes that made it important to hit straight and the rolling fairways to recover. Two major negatives..... first tee time out was 804am even though the sun was up at 530am and so was the heat. Second the tee boxes needed to be repaired and moved. With a course requiring strategy was disappointed in the condition of the boxes, some had no grass left to hit off.

I cant say enough about this course, I feel it is one of the best tracks in the Hilton Head area, not only for the price, which I do include in my reviews (value). The fairways that are designed to run through the beautiful but dangerous forests are spectacular to view, as are the and beautiful greens, some of which are surrounded by marshland, a real eye catcher to say the least! The course architect was Clyde Johnston, 6722 from the tips Old South is a true championship course. The back 9 is where the course gets tougher, 16 specifically. The last 3 holes on each 9 are awesome! Spectacular views across the marshes lining the Intracoastal Waterway grace six holes, giving golfers one of the most thrilling rounds in the area. I recall 4 island greens" (sort of) , and views over the Calibogie Sound to Hilton Head. I played it 5 times and it is usually in good very condition and makes the best of working with the natural land. To top it off, the price is most often quite reasonable. And stay for lunch. FROM THE OLD SOUTH WEBSITE: Recently named 2011 - Lowcountry Golf Course of the Year and is a "Favorite Public Course in Hilton Head" in 2008, 2009 and 2010 in Hilton Head Monthly magazine.

Literally everything from staff to monitoring their pace of play we gave up after 12 holes and being out there well over 3 hours.

The pro is that there were no houses around the course, unlike a nearby golf course. The golf course is well maintained, especially around the green, with no leaves or debris. The sand is also fluffy here; I can use the bunker, unlike the cooler fall months in Toronto (where I'm from). I heard it's comparable to more premium golf courses in Toronto. It also comes at a premium rate at $77USD pp during the afternoon. The golf carts have built in digital maps which is quite handy to navigate the course. Still at that price, not entirely worth it for me personally since I suck at golf. However, we felt like we were playing alone, so I didn't need to rush. As a newbie golfer, I found this golf course challenging, even playing off the red tees. There are about three par 5's and mostly par 4s/5s. Some parts I had to strategize a bit to avoid hazards instead of just hitting straight with my longest club that could get to the green. Maybe people are just this good here?! I don't see any stray balls around the golf course. I lost more balls than I would've liked. My partner told me there weren't any beginner-friendly golf courses to choose from in Hilton Head (not sure if he was lying because he wanted to play longer courses). So we ended up playing here... bit off more than I could chew. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice golf course and it would be less frustrating if you play well and not a newbie. I haven't played in a while so blew up a few holes from warming up.

So you feel you are a great amateur golfer, right?…read more Well this is definitely the golf course to learn how proficient a golfer you feel you are versus how good a golfer you actually are in reality. How would I know? Because I lived on this Island for seventeen years with its twenty-seven hole Tom Fabio designed golf course will be challenging for any amateur golfer. The Pro Shop staff is friendly, polite, and a lot of fun starting with their Club Pro Wes. Magnolia's nine course has a slope of 145. But if you "feel froggy", then leap over to Palmettos' nine which are my favorite (vistas, and challenges) to test your skills for that specular challenge. Here is a tip: If you hit into the short grass in the rough, unless you have a VERY STRONG SWING, give up! Why? Because when the rough grabs your club and pulls your arms out of your shoulder sockets dislocating them, you may feel it was not worth it to not only blow your round (and pay the off your bet. No, not you, there is not betting in golf) but to have to take that trip to the hospital. Of course, I do not mean you "young buck" because "Yue can do it!" Lol Fees are about right for a course of this quality. The NCAA's Big East both Men's and Women's play their Championship Tournaments here which we watched each year. So I always felt that was a positive endorsement of Callawassie's golf courses. The other reason I feel it is a quality course is the over 12.8 million dollars their club membership (yes, this included me) invested over that 17 years I was a member in retrofitting this course. Another tip: ever putt on concrete? You will be happy you did when you putt on these greens. Believe me when I state the Membership only opened up this gem of a golf course to the public to help offset the very "inexpensive" water regulations the EPA imposed upon all golf courses in the United States but especially in the Southeast. Devon (tender bar) is you host in the main clubhouse. Where the food is good to great depending on the day. You have your choice of quite a few golf courses in the Beaufort/Hilton Head area but if you want to challenge your game then Callawassie's (27) holes will fulfill your need for a great golf challenge and provide you all you can handle, just fine! Hit 'em on and enjoy!

Recommendations & Highlights: - Reserve the golf cottages for your guests to stay in and utilize the concierge staff to help with the logistics (it's slightly more complicated than a hotel block but WELL worth it). We're from Boston and most guests traveled, so we wanted them to get the most out of traveling here together, while enjoying the amenities of Berkeley Hall. We stayed on the premises as well, and it was so fun to be in close proximity to many of our guests for the whole weekend and not just one day. - Megan Szucs (event planner) is a total professional who was so patient and helpful during the planning process and completely prepared and present on the day of our wedding. - Chef John Soulia and his team are incredible. We're picky eaters but did not want to be "that couple" that changes everything on the chef's menu; so we ultimately trusted that we'd chosen the right place with the right chef. Long story short we could NOT have been more correct. We ordered from the wedding menu, and everything was executed beautifully and perfectly across the board - like this is not your average "wedding food". They listened to questions, suggestions, and comments during the tasting, and they (with Megan and the concierge staff) met with us several days in advance of our wedding to review. At the end of the day, however, they're really just amazing at doing what they do. You can trust that. - The Berkeley Hall staff in general is unreal. They're professional, fun, thoughtful, intuitive, funny - I could go on. We've heard so many positive comments back from our guests about their interactions with the people who make this place as great as it is; and the compliments are well deserved. They set the perfect tone - balanced between "here we are at a lovely private golf club" and "but really we're here to have a great time." - The golf speaks for itself - we did a golf outing and everyone who played loved it. - It's close enough to Hilton Head that you can go to the beach, close enough to Savannah that you can get there, Old Town Bluffton is great - there's a lot to do close to the club. We honestly cannot think of a single negative comment about having our wedding at Berkeley Hall; and we would come back here to redo it all over again without changing a thing. It was truly one of the best experiences of our lives and will without a doubt be a tough one to beat.

The Clubhouse dining room has an intimate yet unpretentious ambience with top-tier Southern hospitality and genuinely friendly service.
